  1. Interesting enough this accident comes on the same day of the LoHud article in which William Gorton, a DOT regional director stated that the new "rumble strips will reduce the number and severity of incidents along this section of Route 9."

    Lo Hud Article

The new rumble strips were cut and run from where the road comes back together by Susan Drive to just about the county line. They are also supposed to lower the speed limit as well.

  2. The govt officials are talking about liability issues in the article. Would it not be a greater liability when someone, an active ff has a hard attack due to lack of fitness? We loose more active people due to heart attack than anything else. In addition when a member is in the gym working out that is one more member responding and can get the rig out faster. I know when I am in the gym and the alarm comes in I now can get the rigs all started, gear up, check the pre plan for the address, check the map for the best route all while waiting for the crew.

  3. For once I'd love to see a fire department swallow their pride, re-draw their boundaries, and let whomever is closest take the job in. Why spend millions of dollars on an un-needed facility when you can just re-draw the district lines or have a mutual aid plan in place to provide the best coverage of a certain area for the good of civilions!!! I can't even recall how many times I've heard certain fire departments get sent to fires when there was a neighboring company full of firemen just waiting for their pagers to go off at their firehouse literally BLOCKS AWAY!

Maybe it is time to look at some of the district boundaries. I remember seeing on LI where there was a fire in the Nassau County 8th pct. Levittown FD was next door but Bethpage was 1st due. LFD was called on MA.

There are many instances where the 1st due is no where near the closest company. It may be that it is time to revisit and redraw the lines to give the people better responses. But before that happens everyone has to check their ego's and think of it as best for the tax payer and not the fire company.

Won't happen in this lifetime I'm afraid.

  4. Cablevision is a terrible company and the Dolan family deserves every minute of this. Those greedy people ruined the West Side Stadium with the money that they get for cable service. I wonder how much of the money they gave to another failure, Isaiah Thomas, came from the cable side of the business.

Everyone forgets they own the Garden, the Knicks and Rangers as well as MSG TV.

  5. I am constantly seeing unsafe driving by professional ambulance drivers and wish it will cease. For Godsake, you are driving and have the lives of many in your hands. I hope all EMS drivers nationwide can wake up and BE SAFE. EVOC and CEVO shouldn't be the ONLY training. Driver training should be "On-Going" and maybe an annual requal.

It never ceases to amaze me, the private ambulance services constantly going down Route 9 at over 70 MPH, lights and sirens. doing transports, etc.

  6. First to consider, do you have hydrants? what is the distance between? No hydrants then what is the average driveway length? Most of our district is non hydrant and we lay in from the beginning of the driveways. Then the source engine hooks up. Some driveways are longer then 1,500 feet. How many feet was the engine designed to carry?

  7. No mater what, you are a firefighter and should go prepared for anything. You may be driving a rig but then put to work. I always have my gear at least on the truck. I wear my bunker pants while driving, the rest is in the engineers compartment. Coat, helmet, mask etc. If I'm driving the brush truck it is on there someplace, back seat, compartment etc. You must be ready for anything. I have gone to the leather boots which make it much easier to drive then the rubber.

  8. I remember that night. We (Ladder 2) went to MT Vernon Hospital as their generator failed. We were supplying power using the truck for lights in the building. We had power cords running up the outside of the building. The FD motor mechanic was brought in and after several hours got their generator running so we were able to go back in service. A short time later we went to a multi alarm fire started by candles at a large house on 3rd street about 1 block from the Hutch Parkway.

  9. Call originated through the Coast Guard who got it supposedly off Marine Band. Cold Spring, Garrison, Ft. Montgomery, West Point, and PD units from Organge, Rockland, Putnam and NYSP. Report was off Constitution Island. Other marsh area from Bear Mountain Bridge north were checked then units further north were called out to check.

  10. If this was true, then the entire bill is even less then useless. Ok we have a policy that says you can never be late for work. If you are and we fire you then you have no legal recourse. The whole purpose of the bill is to superceed job rules.

If this were the case then the bill is not even worth the paper its printed on.

Barry you are 100% correct. It is totally useless, just like the clowns in Albany who voted for it. It will appease enough people so that when the elections come up in November they get the Vol. fire and ems vote. You work for anyone in NYS and they do not, and I repeat for the deaf who have not read my prior posts on this, need a reason to fire you unless you are union and covered by said union. New York is one of several At Will employment states that can fire without any cause.

  11. I think there are plenty people in state govt that would pass almost anything in order to get re-elected. As said before, they cant pass a budget, which is actually important to EVERYONE, but can pass this which benefits a few.

I have to agree with you. What everyone here fails to realize is what I said before. In NYS your employer really does not need a reason to fire someone. You are an AT WILL employee and they can fire you on a whim. No reason given. It happens every day.
