I just checked their website and it seems to be down. There's a little bit of history on this site... www.nyfd.com PM me later with your e-mail addy and I will see what I can do about getting you some more info, hook you up with a contact or two in the firehouse.

There's the Towering Inferno, which was Hollywood all the way, and one from way way way way back called Fire Alarm. I saw it at work and kinda giggled watching the old salt in the firehouse(who looked to be well into his sixties) dating a young lady probably no older than 23. I think it was made in either the 20's or 30's.

If I remember correctly, that was Putnam and Mellor Engines. The house was abandoned sometime in the 90's due to a "mudslide???" that undermined the structural integrity of the building. There was a tin house that wasn't too far from there(I forgot the name of the street) that housed one of the engines. I don't remember which one.

Just a note here, some of those response times may actually be a little lower, considering there are units that occasionally neglect to go 10-84.

Yes the story in Backdraft was a lot more Hollywood, I actually enjoyed it more. I thought Ladder 49 was depressing.
-
No difference whatsoever, I just liked how it rolled out, "40 Control, this is XX-X-X"

If it was a 65-2, it means it wasn't a LODD. The 65-2 is a message of importance, it tends to be administrative in nature and is used when an off duty member or a retired member that was well known passes.

They aren't the WC, but here's some of my personal faves. 1994 Pierce Dash side mount Tanker Pumper, LCFD 17-4-4. 1986 Ford/Ward79 Source Pumper LCFD 17-2-2, first rig I really learned how to drive/pump. Photo Courtesy nyfd.com 1985 Mack CF FDNY E-308, I remember watching the guy paint the gold leaf on this rig, the summer of 85, and him yelling at me to stop tapping my foot. The 97 Seagrave that replaced this is also a beauty. OK OK, Here's one from Westchester I really like, and that's saying a lot cause I have never been a fan of stainless steel ellipitcals. I'll also add Port Chesters TL-2 and the Mack CF refurbs running in Yonkers. All photos taken by me, except where previously noted.

You would think that "Control" (How the deputies addressed dispatch) would become P-911 and 40 Control(Used primarily by the fire and ems units) would stay the same call sign.
-
Well said, dude. It's gonna lead to problems, confusion being the least of it.
-
interesting....Gotta get up there sometime and see how things have changed.
-
As far as I know, they do, and then they get pumped out on the ground.
-
Excellent article.
-
Would just be easier to roll them as the original designation and just use magnetic numbers.
-
Sounds about right.

Talk about having a crappy day!!! (Insert rimshot here) Thank you, Thank you, enjoy the falafels, I'm here all week. Tip your wait staff, they're working hard for ya!!!!

Shawn, I was about to ask you if you guys had any shirts up there. PM me and let me know. Thx.
-
Let me put it to you this way, I collect certain memorabilia, mostly Code 3's. There were maybe three people selling them. Most of the t-shirts I saw didn't really interest me. Dispatchers get no love. It was mostly geared towards equipment and apparatus sales as opposed to goodies, such as the Allentown flea market. I honestly saw very little that caught my eye.
-
Hang by ball bag, slowly saw with VERY dull butter knife. I'm also wondering the same thing, WTF was her partner??
-
Couldn't have said it better myself. I can also add two words. UBER LAME!!!! Don't get me wrong, I walked away with a few goodies, but nothing super impressive and nothing else out there that caught my eye.

I bet the CO of that boat will get his @$$ handed to him.

They'll get them. The fireifghters won't pay a dime for them. One thing I have noticed, is that this department is reactionary, especially after a tragedy that could have been prevented. Example, 1994, 3 members killed in Flashover in Manhattan. Within 6 months, bunker gear. Fast forward 11 plus years, 2 members dead, 4 in bad shape, because they didn't have bail out ropes that may or may not have saved them. I give it a year before you see everyone fully equipped with the ropes. Just my 5 cents.
