  1. I saw that fire, lost alot of downtown. pretty wild...high wind and heavy fire load. I also caught a marina fire there back inthe summer of 2001a couple of nice yachts went up if I remmeber correctly. You could see the smoke from Boston harbor
  2. chiefs suffer though a thankless job of never ending complaints and head aches from all sides. If all it takes is light show more intense than a pink floyd concert on acid then i say let 'em have the trucks. Its a great perk for a group who give far more than most.
  3. there has been studies concerning cell phones as ignition sources in flamable environments and there is no hard evidence to support these claims. While there are issues with cell phone batteries catching fire they were all the result of modified or improperly manufactured aftermarket batteries. The biggest threat to FF's is static electricity. So while a cell phone, like any electronic device (pagers, radios, etc) should not be carried into a potentially explosive environment they are not a significant risk to your safety.
  4. yeah, that was pretty vague...FD. thanks for the info
  5. havent seen it yet, but I hear its got even more lights that 2372...poor mike
  6. You couldn't get away with this S**T at an any other job. I can't believe only one other person has brought this up? Why is it that firefighters have come to this level where they think that when they're in "their" house that they're really in a house they own. You can't screw, drink, or show up high to work no matter what you do.
  7. BEfore you slam pataki, you've gotta read the whole bill. There may be somethign piggybacked to it that is wholey unrelated. Sadly in politics, it is never as simple as it could or should be.
  8. Its simple...If you get on a rig you wear your gear. Luckily this is not much of an issue with my company. 99% of the time guys are wearing bunker gear. SCBA isn't quite as good, but the newer guys all get the point and are doing things the right way. Is there anyone on this board that believes there are reasons to not put on their gear??? It seems like this thread is almost preaching to the choir.
  9. like XCAPT133 mentioned, ESS should be helpful. I also know of people having success using ebay...the last one I heard about went off for about $250
  10. its a couple of hundred bucks...but if you can convince your dept. to use you instead of anyone else...$20 a pop adds up quick and can help recoup costs...besides, they're relatively easy to work on if you want to get into repairs
  11. while there is some research linking particulate conatamination to things like blood thickening, the increase in heart attack deaths is more commonly attributed to obesity. Just look around your dept and see how many guys struggle up a few flights of stairs because of some extra girth thats snuck up on them over the years. Then look at some of the photos of the membership from back in the good old days. Not too many guys throwin out that big side profile. Add that to the fact that FF's in general are getting older and less fit (SCBA, bunker gear, and a lack of a whole lot of fire lets us add years to our career).
  12. In Pleasantville, we've contracted out the plowing. DPW does a good job clearing roads on the way to alarms...all though, when 4 chiefs and ex chiefs work for DPW help shouldn't be a problem
  13. Absolutely right. But if you want to talk about it from an engineering point of view...seagrave and ferrara have the the best engineered trucks out there. Everything from the way the chassies are prepared to the way the cabs are welded together, these two stand out above the others. But to say any rig is a piece of crap comes down to the way its been specked out...unless of course you're talking about multi-plex
  14. This is not an issue of kick backs or collusion amongst officials and manufacturors...its simple math. The cost of improved saftey versus the cost of injury. Its the same formula that EVERYONE uses, wether it be New York City, OSHA, NFPA, etc. If the benefit cost is greater than the losses faced by not using better gear, the city is going to go with the less expensive gear. Everyone and everything has a dollar value
