  1. Can we stay away from the ESU vs. Firefighters?

Just talk about what was done wrong and move on.

I really don't care WHO was to blame. How about talking about what was done wrong.

What was the correct thing to do?

What was could have been done if they couldn't wait? (The car was resting on the patients chest and he couldn't breath, for example).

Obviously something went wrong. I'd rather learn from it. Not try to be the judge and jury placing blame.

But that may just be me.

  2. Tappan Zee Bridge is a nightmare when it backs up. When traffic is not moving the only hope is the siren. The driver in front of you knows you're there, but the people 20 cars ahead need to know you're trying to get through. Usually the first one or two trucks or ambulances get through, but then cars fill the lane behind you and pack it in even tighter.

That's why it's best for a responce from both ends.

But siren wise, you feel like a moron sitting there, not moving and the siren is blasting. Again, hopefully the cars ahead hear it and try to move over.

  3. I don't question the need of law enforcement on the river.

I question whether law enforcement has a right or is allowed to to stop a vessel just for the sake of a safety inspection if no violations are observed. I'm no lawyer and have no knowledge of laws as they pertain to the river.

But, If I'm operateing my vessel in a safe and lawful manner and have whatever I'm supposed to have visable, then why get stopped?

Or, I get stopped once and then again and then again. All with no visable reason to get stopped?

    That's my question.

  4. So they will not protect you?

    1) then how do you cover your crews? You need something covering your tail when loading if not the FD, have at least another ambulance.

    2) If the FD will not cover you, do you still cover them? Do you do standbys at fire scenes for them? rehab? Time for a big sit down chat BEFORE someone gets killed.

1 - Use of flares. Assign a crew memeber as a spotter. The idea of a utility truck, on the order of one of the HELP trucks has been discussed. For calls on the Tappen Zee Bridge there is nobody better than the Thruway Wrecker Crew personnel. They protect us better than anyone could.

2 - Spimply put - We get called - we answer the call.

  5. I actually have a question... Why do ambulances have chevrons? Drivers of abmulances are taught to park the bus out of traffic. Even on a MVA, a Fire truck will usually block a ambulance from traffic. It seams that there is no need for them. I am all for safety and I think it does look interesting but do the chevrons really do their job?

here are some pics for thought...

Our Fire Department, separate from the ambulance corps, has refused to provide any traffic control for ambulance calls on the Thruway. Unless it's a jaws call, fire or fluids, the ambulance corps is on its' own. So when pulling past the scene is not an option, the ambulance is the only line of defense. Chevrons will be on the next ambulance purchased.
