  1. Everbody can read the OSHA Standards and become "experts".

OSHA is really not that complicated. They create a lot of work/regulations/paper to create an awareness. The reasonable assumption is that when you have an awareness of the hazards, you will be able to be prepared to mitigate those hazards and perform your work safely.

Non-Mandatory Appendix F -- Rescue Team or Rescue Service Evaluation Criteria

The way I read this -----if you do not go into a confined space, you do not need a rescue team.

  2. That's a good attitude. Now let's put the shoe on the other foot... You are dispatched and PD gets there and confirms that it's a minor fender bender with no injuries.

Do you continue to respond or go back to quarters and whatever you were doing before the call?

We have in our area some sections of roadway with a dual response so you get 2E and 1L from EACH direction. Sometimes the northbound apparatus will stop in the left lane and cross three lanes of traffic to access a scene on the southbound side or vice versa. In the rare instance that 4E and 2L are required that's nice but 99% of the time most of it is not required.

I know there are many departments who don't think the police are "qualified" or "authorized" to cancel an FD response but sometimes its just a little bit crazy.

Most of our departments still send the full box assignment when the police call back and tell us the automatic alarms is food on the stove. Why would we go back when there really is an accident? <_<

  3. All OVAC members have returned to duty and are OK. We have purchased C02 meters that will be brought into every call. I monitored the situation via radio, and these members acted in a professional manner. Second guessing and negative posting is NOT appreciated by me. It happened quick, and as soon as they realized what they had, they were out. Trust me,all of us would have been in the same boat. Thank you to all who expressed concern. I cannot comment on the status of the victims.

Second guessing and asking questions is okay. That's how I'm gonna learn.

Negative posting - There is no place for it on this site.

I am also happy everybody is okay.

  4. I started this topic to hopefully find out what the crew thought at the time.

I would rather "monday morning quarterback" when everything turns out okay. So yes things, maybe, could have been handled differently.

The call came in as a man down, or something to that affect. Once the crew discovered there were two patients, did they think there was something in the house that affected both patients? And that they should be removed from the scene prior to continuing treatment?

Did they think the 2nd patient was reacting to the situation of the first patient?

The suggestion that crews carry CO detectors is a constructive suggestion.

    Any others?

  5. It would appear there were other agency's that would seem to be closer. I would be curious to know the reasoning behind the agency's dispatched. (The less obvious ones, of course).

I think that's the interesting part. There is a logical reason why say Scardsdale was dispatched and say Valhalla wasn't.

I wouldn't want to be the guy or gal who gets the call that asks for 10 ambulances.

Looks like everything went as smoothly as possible.

I like the stories, not the critics.

  6. This is all good banter and I havn't taken it as PD vs EMS vs FD. Everything here cited here are just examples of situations that happen. Tomorrow, in a given situation, the cop is running into a burning building, a firefighter is chasing a purse snatcher, etc. etc.

All good people with the best of intentions.

Hopefully, just like everything in life, the individual will use his/her experience and knowledge and make the correct decision in a particular situation.

    So learn from others actions.

  7. From The Board of Directors Meeting Feb 2, 2010

Mayor Kelly then gave the Fire Department Report. He stated that for the month of November, the

department responded to 27 calls, 20 during daytime hours and 7 during evening hours. For the

month of December, the department responded to 30 calls, 22 during daytime hours and 8 during

    evening hours.

He thanked all of the residents for their donations to the Haiti earthquake victims.

    He

then gave an update on the engine. He stated that the Village has going out to bid and there have

been two sets of bid documents picked up and the bid opening will be on Friday. The pump test for

the old engine is scheduled for tomorrow. He stated that all of that information and more will be

presented next Wednesday night and asked that all questions regarding the engine be held until that

    time.
