  1. I've had experience with both the Hurst and Holmatro tools. Personally I prefer the Holmatro as I find it easier to use. The tools are lighter and I find the grip style control to be easier to use. That said, the Hurst tools I have used are the slightly older and I believe Hurst has some newer stuff that is lighter weight and has more ease of operation that I have not had the opportunity to use, but I'm sure someone else will have.
  2. I agree!!

  9. Those trucks are beasts, Rye's Utility 49 is very similar and we have found that we need to have a qualified driver's list for it because so many of our members are not used to driving something with a wheelbase that long. Good luck to you with it.
  10. Yes they do, it is currently being kept out back of their station.
  11. They still have the rescue. Engine 74 is in the garage if needed.
  12. The one thing I always think now is...Do I have a portable?...Down here in AL we don't have them in the apparatus so we have to grab them off the charger before we head out. The one time I forgot one I ended up in a position where I had to do all my radio communications from the command car and it really screwed me up. (I would rather not have to go into the way my department operates, so thats the reason for the vauge description of the scenario)
  13. As I was driving today I heard something on my scanner that struck me as kinda funny. Auburn Fire was dispatched to an EMS call, as they always are. When the battalion(sp?) car got there he gave the size up, "10 story educational building, nothing visible from the exterior." My question is, besides as either force of habit or just to get used to doing it, why would someone give a size up of this nature for a medical call. Also, does anyone here do anything like this, and what are your reasons for doing so.
  14. The call was for an allergic reaction in a specific room in the building so that is why it struck me as so funny. The BC goes on all calls they run. Auburn's Department is very good about establishing command and doing size up. They are a paid dept. and a few of their guys have joined our volunteer department and have "inspired" us to do the same.
  15. As a college student, I can tell you that underaged drinking is a huge problem now. Im not saying I never drink, but I don't do it to get drunk and I don't associate myself with the kind of people who cause problems. However, I see it all around me, wether it is frat's causing their pledges to have alcohol poisoning or kids thinking that drinking makes them invincible. For instance here is an encounter that some friends and I had: we were hanging out at a friend's apartment, on his front stoop/porch. We heard a bottle break in what we thought was the parking lot of the complex. The bottle came from a group of kids across the way and up stairs (the entrances all face the parking lot and are on the outside. My friend who lived in the apartment went out into the middle of the parking lot, and asked that they not throw anymore bottles as he has expensive tires and doesn't want to run over glass. The kids started to get belligerent and threatened to come down and start a fight, it was only after they saw me and my other friend (both over 6'6) that they backed off. Meanwhile a friend of ours got freaked out and she called the police and asked that they maybe just drive by, not get out, and maybe scare the kids. So the police come, and the officer gets out of his car and goes into the party. He id's the first person he see drinking, she was 16...he then Id'd the rest of the group who were all underaged. The best part was, as the cop pulled in and walked up one set of stairs, about two dozen kids went running out of the apartment and down the opposite staircase. The officer confiscated the beer and the kicker was that the girl who lived in the apartment wasn't even there!! she came home later, after many of the people filed back into the party who had run away, and made everyone get out, since the poilce had called her parents because they couldn't find the owner of the apartment at the party. These kids have no respect for the people around them, even their friends; and it is a growing problem.
  16. I believe low bid should exist assuming there are no extenuating circumstances. For instance; in Rye we have quite a few railroad bridges which most ladders will not fit under. So when we were looking for a new ladder, we had to take into account the height of these bridges. From my recolection, the Ladder we now have (and the similar one on order) were the only ones that could meet the height requirements as well as the other specs necessary. We ended up needed to find other bids for the latest one, but were able to show that the one was the only one that fit the bill. So once again...in a perfect environment, where you don't have low bridges, or narrow streets, or weight restrictions on roads, yes the lowest bid (as long as it is a reliable name) should be highly considered.
  17. ." I must say I've seen the house (unfortunately only from the outside) since my Girlfriend is from the same town. It was an amazing site, especially to someone who is a big fan. However it is widely thought that since the house was built into a rock face, the resulting moisture and mold contributed to Johnny's bad health in his later years.
  18. amazing...everythings still all shiny....hahaha
  19. Is this in effect immediately? Im takin FF2 at the end of May, so I was wondering....
  20. We had something similar happen in Rye a couple of years ago. A kid didn't engage the parking break on his manual transmission cart all the way and the car proceeded to roll backwards down the driveway, off a stone wall and into a tree.. These incidents are always fun to roll up on, you are like, how did that get there?
  21. Does anyone know where I can find a map of the trails around silver lake? I know I had one a couple of years ago, but I can't find it. I figure I might just have to make my own next time im in the area. On a side note. Does anyone know the westchester parks stance on placing Geocaches?
  22. So I found out the map I had was from someone who had it a long time ago...Looks like im gonna have to make my own this summer...
  23. Thats funny. My friend and I actually got one yesterday that was an ammo box. I would have never thought twice about it. I guess since a lot of people don't know what it is, this type of confusion could occur. on another point, I still wish I could find that map again.. lol
  24. as they say....Rice is nice but 8 is great!
