  1. Mike, People who want to take their next deep breath should not be doing what this picture shows. As other members have stated, even IF Con Ed asked them to extinguish the wires, they had the wrong apparatus. Since nobody from the Dept has enlightened us as to why they did what the picture shows, members are stating their opinion. From an earlier post of yours: I however think that this being on FF close calls or wherever it was found was enough for this dept and the people involved and doesn't need to be taken on by emtbravo. We don't know the whole story so we shouldn't say omg wtf because as firefighters we have to adapt to the situation and also we really don't need to say he has to own up to everything that he did and take accountability for his actions. No he really doesn't, especially not to anyone on this website. The member of the Dept certainly does not have to "own up" to his actions on this site. But he most certainly has to take accountability for his actions within his Dept (I hope).
  2. Seth, As Calhobs said, people did the same in 94. You are wrong in painting Boston fans that way. They did not riot last time Bruins lost in the cup finals, nor did Boston fans in 86 when they had good reason to after losing to the Mets. And if you read into it, it is not even hockey fans but nut jobs looking to rebel. Great hockey finals by the way.
  3. The proper spelling of the word is competent. If we are going to rip apart others for butchering the english language, let's get the spelling right and keep run on sentences to a minimum.
  4. If they are not trained in water rescue and no longer performing it, why did the IC waste an hour of the crews time watching a guy in the water? I hope that the City Council was advised in writing by the Chief that they no longer performed those services. It certainly sounds like there is more to the story than what was written.
  5. Helicopper, If a defendant signs off on a guilty plea signs a check and mails it in, that case should be considered closed by the defendant. Do you want every ticket holder who pleads guilty calling the desk every day saying did you get my check?? How much time would that take? If a municipality screws up, and they all do, they should admit it and move on. I am no millionaire, but I do not look for that $65 dollar check to clear every day. I do find it odd that when I forgot to pay a ticket in Ct, I received a letter from NYS stating my DL was suspended and this person did not, but it happens. There are responsibilities on both sides, it looks like the ticket holder in abaduck's case took care of her's and the village dropped theirs.
  6. Democrats support unions republicans do not, see Wisconsin. It is funny that the majority of emergency service people lean to the republican side, but their party does not support them.
  7. Looka like a low budget ansul system.
  8. Village Fire Department elections are held in April. I believe all Town/District elections are held in December.
  9. 23 ppm at the rink I was in last night on my personal co monitor.
  10. Captain, I am not going to argue about the lack of standards in NYS for becoming a ff, an officer or Chief. But their are some Dept's that have worked hard, and have pretty high standards to meet in order to become a ff, an officer and chief. So please do not say you need to get voted in period. It is unfair to those Dept's that have set requirements for all classes of ff's, and meet them on a yearly basis.
  11. If the Dept has a good set of SOG's, policies and procedures the chief is guided by those, as well as new policies developed during his term. The excuse that the chief turns over every year or 2 years does not hold water since other volunteer organizations can get things done.
  12. It is up to the membership and the Chief's to fix the problems, if they want to. If the Dept was denied funding for training prior to the tragedy, then they should be raising hell. If they never asked for the training, then shame on them. If the Dept and the Chief's can't/will not fix the problem (lack of training) then the Village should look to remove the leadership and start over. Maybe Mike Blau has been stuck in communities where the FD's rely on tradition and pride instead of training, and the elected officials cow tow to the FD's.
  13. If the FD were run like a business they would be out of business they are not cash positive, they are life positive. Think of the FD as a "loss leader" for a business. You might not make money on it, but you need it to survive.
  14. While I find this Stamford situation interesting, there are obviously 2 sides to each and every story that we have read. In regards to this article, unless the Union Pres was on scene, how can he say the career chief did not push the volunteer chief? If he was on scene and witnessed the whole arguement, I apologize. It just seems each faction is making this whole situation worse call by call by going to the papers after every incident.
  15. Captain, From what I read, the republicans are holding off on voting until the tax cuts are finalized. The Democrats were told that no bills would be passed until the tax bill is voted on, but brought this up anyway knowing it was not going anywhere. Shame on both parties for playing politics with this bill. As far as your millionaire and billionaire quote, this bill will have an effect any any household with a combined income of 250K+. In this neck of the woods, that does not get you too far.
  16. Having a Chief (paid or volunteer) disregard an order from the Mayor is not bad PR, it is insubordination. The fact that this Chief thought it was funny to put this on his vehicle (or a rig) says a lot about his level of common sense.
  17. My guess would be no good will be gained by posting video from a scene on a social network site other than to brag what a big job it was or what a good job they did. You either get a salary or volunteer to do it, why brag. In today's litigious world, that video may cost you your job or your home. Do you think it's worth it? If you want to film scenes and keep them in house for training should be ok, but putting them on the internet for all to see in the end is a no win situation in my opinion.
  18. If the PIO had a journalist "in his pocket", the story would be in the paper. From what you have posted, HFD looks like a very progressive FD. It is a shame they do not get the media recognition to go along with it.
  19. While I agree the media always looks for the negative stories, The HFD PIO might want to work on some relationships with the media to get these stories out there.
  20. Hiring full time career fire dept's does not solve the problem, unless properly staffed. NYC based on radio traffic rolls FAS teams to work and has incoming units take over responsibility. Other than maybe Yonkers, there is no FD in Westchester that can handle a multi alarm fire with a FAS team without calling for outside help. Response times, without properly trained personnel are useless. Hillbilly FD can respond in 1 minute with 2 and 1 quicker than cities, but who is manning the rigs? Career or volunteer it is about training and having enough manpower on scene promptly.
  21. If EMS service is inadequate, it needs to be improved. As with fire or police, a longer response time is to be expected in rural areas - that's a trade-off you make when you move there. Having NO service at all is not a trade-off that should ever exist. That is the tradeoff they make, they live in an area where they can choose to pay or not to pay for fire service. They chose not to pay. I am sure if providing fire protection was brought up to vote in that county, nothing would change. As has been said numerous times on this thread, the homeowner made a conscious decision not to pay. You can't lay this on the feet of the FD or the county govt, it is on the home owner alone.
  22. I would venture to guess there are very few if any members here who have never abused lights and sirens, or have not been on a piece of equipment that has. If we are going to start topics about things that are abused it would need it's own section, if not it's own server here. And the article referenced was in 1996! Do some EMS employees abuse privlege? Yes Do some Police Officers abuse privlege? Yes Do some Firefighters abuse privlege? Yes I did not read the first thread that this was linked to but the article referenced (from 1996) could have easily put PD or FD instead of EMS providers for his purposes of pointing out abuse.
  23. I am neither a cop, or a supporter of this perp but I have a couple of questions for the PO's on the board. What is the max time if convicted of all charges? Would the charges be served concurrent or consecutive? The article states the Judge offered the plea, can the judge do that or did it come from the DA office?
  24. Although I am not an english major, I do not believe that qualifies as a metaphor. The bottom line is that in the end, if this "consolidation" goes through 2 of the 3 current dept's(PD, FD, EMS)are going to end up on the short end of the stick in regards to training $ and grant funding. If the county is dead set on moving forward with this, I would prefer to see a professional emergency management adminsitrator, preferably with a solid knowledge of all specialties take control, and have 3 deputy commisioners with singular expertise in their field. Then the new head of this dept can decide based on merit that involving the County PD in hazmat might make sense to get a quicker response. Or it might make sense to shelve it and have the county subsidize YFD's unit for county availability, or the squads. Either way, this topic will remain interesting until the county makes it's decision.
