  1. Does anyone know of any blackberry apps for emergency services? Looking for something that can give medication id's and english/spanish translation. Thanks!
  2. OK...I'll throw in my 2 cents cap. I feel a great firefighter is one that will put all others ahead of him/her self (goin PC here guys and gals). They will take the time to show the "Young guns" the tricks of the trade and arent afraid to learn something new. They will always respect those that respect them and dont allow the ego to get in the way. Lots of good opinions here and like the cap said, I hope more people chime in!
  3. Maybe, but it doesn't mean **** safety!
  4. Coming from a person who used to sit on scene for what seemed like forever in somers, I applaud SFD for finding a solution to the problem and salute those members who were dedicated to helping their community. The problem was not that they are a "social club", the issue was a lack of persons willing to respond to so many calls for free! The SFD is a volunteer agency with a HUGE call volume, resulting in what i refer to as "volly burn out". As far as their professionalism goes, TOP NOTCH! Hats off to somers for taking a step in the right direction and doing something for the right reason, THEIR COMMUNITY! @Somers FD...Best of luck in your newest endevour!
  5. NYPD and NYC environmental police do walk-in exams all year long...NYC environmental police is a good bet, they are looking to hire all the time and have a pct right in valhalla and yonkers
  6. Unless you have a written agreement that the FFEMT will fill in on a crew if needed.
  7. You could ask the vac to sponsor you...gary might work with ya.

  9. Glad you said it!!!! And the Darwin award goes to... Glad no one was hurt, could have been a disaster!
  10. A very RARE sence of humor at that. Frank will be dearly missed by us all. Deepest sympathy to the O'connor family in this upsetting time.
  11. Congrats Chris...Does this mean your grounded or are you staing with the bird? (Dad got promoted and hes grounded now...thats why im asking)
  12. Thanks EMTBRAVO! there are many things we can learn from these great photos. Just remember guys, be nice!
  13. WAY TO GO GUYS!!!! Great to FINALLY have some good news on here!
  14. My department carries about 750 feet on our first due and tower ladder, the MA engine carries about 1500 feet. Think the last time we dumped more than 500 feet was for hose testing.
  15. Couldn't have said it better myself!
  16. Heres the link i found. I guess some people really don't have anything better to do! it is a nice jacket though. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_leather_jacket_is_denis_leary_wearing_in_rescue_me
  17. its a brooks brothers...google is a wonderful thing my friend
  18. Not sure what you are actually saying here...There are THOUSANDS of points of view on this site. Every person here has their own opinion on almost everything. While we all sometimes don't agree and have rather "heated" debates we all have a chance to show a different point of view. Could you perhaps clarify the situation for us a bit? What EXACTALLY has you so upset? And what service is taking a back seat? In the last month there alone there have been dozens of EMS/fire related and legal questions in the forum. Maybe try taking a deep breath and pleading your case again.
  19. Both videos were good for a laugh! Good call cap!
  20. Had a chance to sit with a few LEOs and discuss this thread over a cup of coffee. The collective opinion was that if a property owner were trying to impede with FD operations they would most likely be charged with Obstruction of Governmental Administration, however, the threat of force from PD is usually enough to get them out of the way. Don't take this as bible, its only the opinion of a few cops but it seemed to make sence to me.
  21. This would be a good question for someone like Remember585. I was under the impression that ALL westchester agencies were using the trunk system. If however there are agencies that are not trunk capable i would imagine it was the decision of the agency not to install the radios (not sure why they wouldn't, it makes life easier on large scenes). Just my thought on it.
  22. Its always good to see another persons opinion, after all that is what the origional post was asking. I understand you feel strongly about this as i am sure you understand my preference. So far the general consensous seems to be that it is the operators decision, and rightly so. It is his responcability to get the rig from point a to point b and sometimes point c back to a safely. Again im not sure about the NFPAs stand point on the topic but i do have some sources investigating for me.
  23. I think ill answer this one from the rehabbers side. Our rehab van (Cortlandt 8805) carries 8 cases of water, bagged ice, cold/heat packs, approx 12 camp chairs, 1 folded cot, an "easy up" tent as well as a tent that attaches to the rear of the van, a misting fan, 2 cooling chairs, a propane powered "palm tree" heater, small geverator and even a coffee maker on top of all the required gear as per NYSDOH part 800. On any emergency we are requested to we will send members out with a small FA kit and a cooler of water to hand out to the FFs. We also have EMTs who will monitor the vitals and physical appearance of ALL the FFs working. (it can be just as hot by the hydrant as it is in the bucket) We also have a command board to keep track of the FFs that have been rehabed and those who needed treatment/transport. As far as the actual rehab procedures we follow those set forth by NFPA. Quick side note, if anyone would like to see what our van has to offer for their FD or even to get an idea for their own send me a PM. Also any reccomendations are always taken under advisement. Great topic chief! should prove to be educational for us all! Stay safe folks!
  24. This should make for a great debate. I too find it difficult to operate a vehicle in bunker pants and a turn out coat, however i find it to be just as easy to operate the pump or stick in turnouts as compared to jeans. Some of our drivers will put their gear on the rig and gear up once they come on location while others dont bring any PPE at all. I'm not able to find the exact text right now but i think NFPA reccomends ALL persons on the rig to be in full turnout gear. I may be wrong on this but i remember seeing it somewhere. Personally john, i say gear up. Stay safe folks!
