  1. You are correct Steve, in Peekskill the career staff operate the apparatus per their contract. The volunteers respond from home or hop the rig if they are at the station when the call hits. The only thing a new station will improve for the volunteers is the condition of the quarters. I know for a fact that the committee working with the architect is NOT looking into 6 individual company rooms. The idea is to consolidate the rooms to allow for one large meeting/public use room that can be divided for the monthly company meetings( 2 companies meet each night Tues-Thur the 1st week ) and then there will be 1 large recreation/lounge/tv room for all 6 to utilize. The career staff will have their own area for the 5 or 6 career staff that are on each shift. Knowing how things go and the fact that this has been looked into and talked about for awhile, I doubt you will see 2010 as a completion date. Most of the properties that are being talked about are not owned by the city and would have to be purchased, and most important the public will have to approve the money for the firehouse and purchase and that could be tricky with school taxes and now city taxes climbing in the City. Finally, it is also possible that the consultant could come back and say that 1 firehouse will not be sufficient, he may suggest two with three companies in each. We will all just have to wait and see what happens.

  6. Hey folks, here is an opportunity to voice your opinion. The Sam Oitice Heroes Remembered Memorial committee is looking into hosting a one-pitch softball tournament this summer to raise money for the completion of the memorial. We will be installing three of the completed pieces sometime in August, maybe July if we are lucky. The last piece to be installed will be the Wall of Heroes with all the names of the fallen first responders from 9/11/01, we do not expect that to be completed until 2009 unless we can raise a significant amount of money over the next few months. My question to all of you is " How many departments/teams/people would be interested in participating in the tournament as a fundraiser ?" We would look to complete the tournament in no more than 1 weekend and possibly even a day depending on the number of entries. Ok, what's everyone's thoughts on this as a possible fundraiser for the 9/11 memorial?
  7. Seeing this is the first year and we are not really sure how the logistics are going to work, we are going with the first 12 teams to sign up. Each team will be guaranteed 3 games and it is co-ed with no minimum or maximum number of males/females. Just a 10 player minimum on the field. We are going to stress the FUN in FUNdraiser. We want everyone to have a good time and still raise some much needed cash to finish the memorial. Now with that all being said if we get more than 12 teams that want to play we will have to extend the tournament to two days and we discussed it tonight at the memorial committee meeting that we probably will extend the number of teams if we get a good response. Those folks that are interested please send me an address to mail the information to. Thanks!

  9. Well, I must say I tend to agree with Raz. When Centennials moved to their new location back 28 years ago, THAT was the time to worry about saving the building. Since then not a single thing has been done to preserve the building, not by the City of Peekskill when they owned it and not by the private owners that have owned it. If the road work was not taking place I would venture to say no one would be talking about saving the building. I would be all in favor of saving the building if it was in better shape, but I agree to spend the money that will be required to repair and restore that building is simply a waste of good money that could be spent on better projects. The question is 'IF" the building is used as a museum will it be under the control of the FD or will it be run by a not for profit, like the Lincoln Society? If the FD does run it will the necessary funds be taken from the annual operating budget of the FD? and will the museum if run by the FD be able to generate enough funds to sustain itself? how many days will it be open and who will care for it? There are just too many questions that are unanswered, let the building go, take the Centennial *4 from above the bay door and save that for use at the current Centennials or even incorporate it into a "new" building that could be built to resemble the old. There are "Historic" buildings and there are "Old" buildings, Centennials is an "Old" building
  10. Hi folks, Well for all of you that went to the March concert or know someone that went to the March concert, we heard your requests to bring Ronan Tynan back and we have, by popular demand: Ronan Tynan: The Gift of Christmas Saturday, December 20, 2008 7: 30 PM The Paramount Center for The Arts 1008 Brown Street Peekskill, NY 10566 Tickets will go on sale in mid June at the Paramount box office and on their website. This show will be his special holiday show and promises to be even more exciting and entertaining than his regular show that he performed on March 14 at the Paramount. Proceeds will once again go to benefit the Sam Oitice Heroes Remembered Memorial. The committee is hoping that the proceeds from this show will allow us to design and place The Wall of Heroes- containing the names of all 403 fallen firefighters and police officers. The first two phases of the project, the statue of the kneeling firefighter and the monolith with Sam's gear, along with the restored fire alarm bell and new bell tower, are scheduled to start installation in August at the Riverfront Green in Peekskill. The RFP is out now to various Landscape Architects and is do back this coming Friday. Hopefully by July we will have a finished site rendering to post of the memorial design as it will appear at the Riverfront park.
  11. Just my 2 cents to add in................ Gas prices are terrible for everyone, but I CHOOSE to volunteer so I accept the cost associated with my choice. Now that is not saying that when I hear some run of the mill odor investigation or something similar on the other side of town that I do not stop and listen first to see if it is worth wasting a 1/4 or 1/2 gallon of gas to run to.......... I think the pool perk is a great idea for the folks that get that, doesn't help the cost of getting to calls, but it does allow you and your family to enjoy some leisure time in the summer at the pool for no out of pocket expense. Not every muni does that but it sure would be something to think about as a way of saying "thanks, we know what it costs you to volunteer and this is just a little something in appreciation".
  12. Anyone know what's going on just off 9W in the Tomkins Cove area? From Charles Point(Peekskill) across the river, it appears to be a medium size brush fire on the side of the mountain. Very Large and heavy smoke plume drifting north toward the Bear Mtn bridge.
  13. It looks like the area across from the RESCO plant ,slightly north of Indian Point. I remember that area burning for quite sometime, actually the entire mountain up to the Peekskill Bay area back around 1979 or 1980. We were able to see it for what seemed like weeks from our high school classes.
  14. Or an EMTBravo cruise!
  15. Thanks for all the answers! To answer a few of the questions: 1) Location will be the Sprout Brook Fields in Cortlandt. These fields will allow us night games if necessary. Peekskill only has one softball field and no lights, so that would make for either a very small tournament or a very long tournament at one game at a time. 2) Dates are not set, we are trying to figure out what dates will work based on summer vacations, summer leagues,etc... We thought a weekend toward the end of June, but we are not sure that would allow enough "advertising" time to get teams to play. So we may be looking at August, as September is a bad month because of conventions and July is just too hot. 3) Entry will be open to all who want to field a team. We are hoping it will be mostly FD's & PD teams, but we are grateful to any who want to enter and support the construction of the memorial. I will post the information as soon as it is finalized.
  16. The members of the Sam Oitice Heroes Remembered Memorial committee would like to invite all our friends and supporters who live in Peekskill to come show your support for Sam and the memorial tomorrow night at the Public Hearing for the Riverfront redevelopment. This is the second of 4 public hearings and we need your support. The committee would like to place the memorial at the Riverfront and with all the pieces except the wall completed and sitting in Cincinatti since last September, we would like to get them in the ground this year. We need to have the public voice their support for the location of the memorial as placement this year was proposed and it was tabled in favor of storage until the new firehouse is built(a site has not been picked, the land has not been secured, the design is not ready, do I need to say anymore about how far from completion this project is?) If you agree and would like to see the memorial at the riverfront, please come to the meeting and respectfully voice a positive vote for the riverfront location. We do not want to make this political, we just want to show the support for this long overdue memorial and the location we feel is best suited for public viewing. Date: Tuesday March 25, 2008 Time: 7:00 P.M. Location: Neighborhood Center - 4 Nelson Ave ( same building as the Library - top floor )
