  1. If he were VP of an equally sized, private corporation, he would be taking in A LOT more.
  2. I like to think of myself as very independant (libertarian?) and I have never been more disgusted with the any party at any time that I am now with the Republicans. The fact that they voted down the Zadroga Bill doesn't need comment. Everyone knows it's horrible. But the "underlying problem" of the tax cut bill stopping everything is equally as sick. The republicans have been beating the "Reduce the Deficit" drum for a while now (understandable), yet demand tax breaks for people making over $250,000. Disgusting. You can't reduce the deficit, while decreasing income (taxes), and keep the economy going with unemployment checks. Don't want to spend money without it being covered? YOU NEED INCOME! That being said, Obama bent over for the Republicans and did what needed to be done, and his party won't support that, either. So the Dems are making me pretty sick, too.
  3. Wow no negative comments yet! Congrats EMTBravo and Congrats Elmsford FD! It does indeed look like a good stop.
  4. All good points, and in the end it's going to end up to the user and their requirements. I think for most users, the pictures that come out of any new smartphone are very sufficient. I think that everything past the Blackberry takes good enough pictures for the general public. IMO the Blackberry is the cutoff. I haven't been satisfied with anything upto and including Blackberry, and every new iPhone, Droid, etc, seems great. It's really about the convenience factor, too. I've had a basic Cannon powershot forever, and rarely used it because 1) many times you don't know when a "photo-op" is going to take place, and 2) when I am going somewhere where I know I'll want pictures like a hike, I don't want to carry it around. The pictures from my iPhone 4 are (in my opinion) amazing, and I don't even use the HDR option. I'm sure I'm in the minority here because we have a lot of semi-professional photographers here, but for the average joe, I do think point and shoot cameras day's are numbered.
  5. This is all very interesting. Class A foam isn't used or discussed in any departments around me and I remember learning in FF1/2 that it was primarily used out west to protect exposures in wildfires. I will certainly keep it on the back of my mind if the opportunity comes to change SOGs.
  6. From a personal, unaffiliated standpoint, I like Arena's ideas and website better. He goes much deeper into the issues and it actually sounds logical. However, 60 Control, get on that MDT dispatching! I volunteer in a department with it, and since I joined, we have always had it and I can't imagine life without it!
  7. What do you think the problem with the bold part is? That the volunteer departments will have to title over everything to the City, then the City title it back to the new organization?
  8. Great shots... that is a very unique rig and it looks like it has a lot of bells and whistles. And I don't mean that in a bad way. Just lots of things on the pump panel I don't recognize. It looks like they run it as a squad, which makes sense if they don't have a truck nearby.
  9. If responding to an alarm or stucture call, we do not count them. If they have FF1, but still probie status, we do count them. If they do not have MRT (CFR-D) we do not count them on a medical call. If they do, we will
  10. Due to your handle (name), I do not think we should give you any ideas. In all seriousness, I think your best bet would be an annual fund drive (mailing), and grants. I am assuming that selling city bonds is not an option?
  11. I can certainly see both sides, but I know my company has enacted furlough days and no-raises for the past 2 years. It seems to me, the right thing to do. Housing prices have fallen significantly, the stock market is still down significantly from its high, and it makes sense that part of the economy "resetting" is to take sacrifices in salary for the greater good of everyone. This seems in line with union philosophy. I also know that lawmakers always find it easier to take from emergency servies than their own pockets, but emercency servies are second in budget only to schools. That being said, I understand why a union wouldn't want to re-open negotiations as it sets a bad precident, but why wasn't this addressed in the original negotiation? I'm sure there was a reason, and I admit to not being educated on the relationship between unions and municipalities.
  12. Yes obviously this is terribly anywhere and to anyone. But in Newark, at this time of year, is an extra slap in the face.
  13. Excellent and enlightening. I imagine this is going on in more states than just NJ
  14. Great pics! That house was ripping. Glad everyone was safe
  15. Looks like it can be a very effective rescue-pumper. I like the tools in the bumper, too. I've never seen that. Winch points on all 4 corners are so huge as well. That's something our rescue is lacking.
  16. They would certainly save lots of money with County Sheriffs as there is no such thing in CT, haha.
  17. I can't speaking with any inside knowledge on this, but it seems the usual protocol for a mutual aid (or even multi-engine response like a box alarm) would apply, which is that the first due engine calls the shots. As long as at least one engine is ON SCENE they can certainly cancel other units if they can handle
  18. Amazing accident and photos. It appears the cab came completely off the frame. I've never seen that before.
  19. It would definitely be a benefit, but probably not worth the cost. LE uses forward facing cameras for many more reason than to prove they were right or wrong if involved in an MVA, while this would likely be the only benefit to a fire apparatus. Add that to the fact that fire trucks get in accidents much less frequently than police cars and I don't think it's worth it.
  20. That does not contradict that Sage said. He said he WOULD sign any legislation to abolish death penalty, but would not support anything encompassing existing death row inmates or pending incidents (such as the one in Cheshire). Really too bad.
  21. I heard from another message board that the test was unofficially moved back at least 3 months, meaning April. Combine that with paratrooper75's info, and I think it's safe to say it won't be in Jan 2010.
  22. In general, can a front lawn be used to support the stabilizers with pads? I know tires will sink, been there, but what about stabilizers. I'm not a aerial operator, but generally we give the piece of road in front of the structure (not the driveway) to the ladder. However, I've been thinking that to get the stabilizers out, it would have to park too far to the middle of the road to let other apparatus by, or put stabilizers on the lawn.
  23. http://www.wsbtv.com/news/25437031/detail.html Good article to discuss. I see firefighters and EMS take pictures of accident scenes all the time. However, I think it's safe to say that the line gets drawn when a victim is photographed.
  24. Yes but I was noting that the (24'?) extension ladder on the officer's side of the 2010 KME TDA looks like it's made of wood!
