A quick thanks to all the mutual aid companies coming to the island. You know the old saying..it's not a matter of "if" its a matter of "when", well for many in NJ and NY along the shore lines "when" came on October 29th. Areas have been decimated and will never be the same.
A few quick pics from the EOC in Westbury at Nassau Fire communications. Oh and by the way the "Keep Calm and Carry On" sign was in place months before the storm came in! Also any emt bravo members who make it into the Comm area ask for Mike Capo. Be Safe out there guys.

Officer Ivan Marcano of the NYPD's Transit District 12 was promoted to Detective this morning in a bedside promotion ceremony with Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. PO Marcano was off duty when he observed 3 males robbing a man on street an took action. Officer Marcano was shot once in the chest, but was still able to pursue the perpetrators, firing his weapon weak handed, while his strong hand was applying pressure to his wounds. I work in the same command with Ivan, he is resting comfortably in the hospital, and is expected to make a complete recovery. He should be released from the hospital shortly. Watching the video and hearing him talk about the action first hand is incredible. You can see in the video how he reverted to the training we have received to take cover, change positions if needed, and never give up the fight even if injured. Great Job Ivan, I am sure the Firearms and Tactics Section will use your story and video to help train future officers.

In his younger years he always went on vacation with my family and my oldest son Angelo [ rescue 40 here] and was a brother to him, I called him kunckle head right up till yesterday and for those that new him would know why. He was family to me, R.I.P. MY Nephew.

They did this very same thing when replacing the Route 9 bridge in Peekskill a few years back. That job was also done by Perini, finished early, and they collected a bonus on it.
I absolutely think it's worth it for them to have a bonus. Look at the 287 project in comparison....

I was not trying to bash and my comments might be slightly dated, but I was basing them on: http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php/topic/44719-south-salem-working-fire-132011-discussion/
I've seen hundreds of depts that have or want to have a ladder company, but they still have work to do on the basics engine company operations.
There are hundreds of unmanned / undermanned apparatus in Westchester (in volunteer, combo and career depts) and a massive lack of basic capabilities. And at the same time we spend a lot of money for service, that in some places is very good and other places very poor.
I am sorry if that offends some people.

Like Westchester really needs another unstaffed/understaffed ladder.
  23. newsbuff liked a post in a topic by ny10570 in Questioning for infectious diseases as part of medical history.
Why does it matter aside from maybe helping figure out what is wrong with the patient? Forget about how its just wrong to treat someone differently based upon a medical condition, what if they don't know they're carrying some disease. Everyone gets treated the same unless I suspect an infection requiring droplet precautions.

    A couple of key points:

    · There is no such thing as a routine call.
    · Complacency kills.
    · Train like your fight – fight like you train.

CO can be an intermitting problem; it can be generated each time an improperly functioning or vented furnace, water heater or appliance starts up or runs. Just because your meter is not showing any CO upon your arrival, don’t assume it is another false alarm, especially if it is for a prior alarm location. You either have a CO problem or a faulty detector. Take the time to perform a complete investigation, fire up each and every fuel burning appliance and all sources of CO and check with a properly calibrated meter.

And on a side note, if you are looking to save fuel, stop riding around in the apparatus for hours on end and calling it driver training. NOTE: This is my opinion and is based on my 36+ years in the fire service! Not looking for a debate, if the shoe fits were it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that your the kind of person that hears about the YFD and the union getting totally blasted by the media, and laughs and says, "Serves them right!" The media has every right to know that there is a PROBLEM with the FIRE SERVICE in Westchester, both CAREER and VOLUNTEER. To completely out someone because they are bringing light to a problem, that has been majorly overlooked, because nobody wants to ADMIT that there is an issue, is asinine. You can think whatever you want of certain people, but anyone could have written was JFLYNN wrote, and I bet dollars to doughnuts that you would bash them too.
The first step to solving a problem is.........
