  1. You too my friend ... what do we have left if we can't catch a little laugh every now and then?
  2. Hahaha ... Yup, that will look perfect on the front of my Hyundai! All kidding aside though, ya gotta admit that a Roto Ray sure knocks down a lot of fire, um ... does a very efficient job of taking the windows ahead of the line as the engine makes their push, ehh ... gets the roofman up top faster than anything else can, nope, that ain't it either ... ah-haaa, now I remember! It sure looks pretty when the fellers are marchin' down Main Street ...
  3. This is shameful, but it's what I have come to expect from today's GOP. Politicians like the wimpy, cry baby Rep. John Boehner who have no respect for Cops, Firefighters or the military. He's never placed himself in harm's way to protect his country or another human being. He stood with the GOP when they held The Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Bill hostage while demanding that Democrats join the GOP in extending tax breaks for the wealthiest 2% of Americans. After getting the tax breaks for their wealthy corporate campaign supporters, they subsequently cut the funding for Zadroga in half before passing it. BTW, Rep. John Boehner didn't even stay in Washington to vote on the final bill which occurred on December 22nd, 2010. He along with many other GOP rich kids had already gone home to celebrate Christmas with their families. I wonder what it feels like to walk away from your responsibilities as an elected public servant whenever you feel like it, leaving your work undone. As a Firefighter, I wouldn't know that feeling, nor did I ever have the desire to abandon my responsibilities for my personal enjoyment ... Rep. John Boehner is a disgrace. Thank you for your service to our country Mr. Buckles ... May you rest in peace ...
  4. The Aerialscope has served the F.D.N.Y. well for many years. It's only a shame that they have a Seagrave rig rather than a Mack CF to attach it to. There is nothing out there that compares to the Mack CF's we used to have ... they were work horses that couldn't be killed.
  5. LOL ... And how does F.D.N.Y. get the job done without ROTO-RAYS ???
  6. For someone who professes to be, "Young and gung-ho" ... your post shows you to be wise beyond your years. 'Buff stuff' is fine, unfortunately our main function as firefighters is to protect lives and property. This is an awesome task that requires constant training on new issues and techniques as well as continued practice on the skills (bread & butter) that we already should possess. As I was told by a senior man (old-timer) as a brand new Probationary Fireman (that was our job title back then) just out of the fire academy, "Hey kid, this is a dangerous job where we all must rely upon each other for survival. The people who call us for help need us to always be 'on top of our game'. The minute that you think that you have it all figured out and have nothing left to learn, you'll have to make an important decision: either retire or 'get back into the job' and study. Nobody on this job will ever know everything, those who think they do will get them self or somebody else killed." In closing 'JohnnyOV', you sound like you have the right attitude to be a success in this profession. If I wasn't retired, you would be the kind of Firefighter that I would want to have working with me when everything goes to s**t in seconds. Keep your head where it's at, don't be swayed by lazy, negative types!
  7. FYI ... I didn't bring up the concept of F.D.N.Y. purchasing a chopper, one of the law enforcement members did. My initial post raised the issue of N.Y.P.D. responding to one incident but not the other because I wanted to understand why such a decision was made. Along with a bunch of stuff that I didn't address, I think I also got the answer ... They will fly in dangerous wind conditions for certain priority calls. From some of the responses that I received, it appears that I stepped on a few people's nuts ... That wasn't my intent, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
  8. Hmmm ... I have one law enforcement guy telling me that F.D.N.Y. should buy their own helicopter and another law enforcement guy telling me F.D.N.Y. can't afford it. BTW, my original post simply posed a question as to why the N.Y.P.D. wouldn't respond to an air recon assignment at a fire incident due to high winds but did respond upstate N.Y. for a hiker pick up.
  9. I agree with you 100%. In fact, F.D.N.Y. attempted several times over the years to make such a purchase and trained firefighters were already in place, but the N.Y.P.D. brass didn't want the F.D. to have that capability and assured them that they would provide whatever air support F.D.N.Y. needed.
  10. That same evening, there was a fifth alarm in Brooklyn. The 'Air Recon Chief' was unable to respond because the NYPD stated they were not flying due to the weather. I'm curious why they were able to fly up to Orange County if they couldn't fly in Brooklyn (where they are based)?
  11. I agree 'efdcapt'. Fog tips are fine for haz mat decon, automobile fires, brush & trash fires. BUT, when you need to get big water via master streams to the seat of the fire, or you're making a push down a hallway ... the smooth bore is the only way to go. BTW, tower ladder master streams are extremely effective when operated up into the top floor windows from below. This method will expose and extinguish fire in attic's and cocklofts while not driving fire laterally throughout the open cockloft area.
  12. I'm glad that this nightmare of a building has finally been removed. Sadly it's way too late for the Brothers who were killed while fighting a fire inside of it. Bloomberg, Scopetta and company should have done time for negligence. Instead, they destroyed the careers of a Captain and a couple of Chief Officers who had nothing to do with it. Never Forget Firefighters Joseph Graffagnino, 33, of Brooklyn, and Robert Beddia, 53 of Statan Island, both assigned to of 5 Truck / 24 Engine who made the supreme sacrifice inside this building...
  13. Thanks for posting the links. Sounds like a great job by F.D.N.Y.'s EMT's & Firefighters. BTW: How does F.D.N.Y. continue to do such a great job when they don't equip any of their ambulances or fire apparatus with 'Roto-Ray's' ??? LOL
  14. I'm glad to see him gone from office. I hope that every member of congress who fought against the Zadroga 9/11 Health Bill loses their bid for re-election ... My link
  15. I agree completely, I've been a registered Republican for 34 years. I'm totally dismayed with the GOP. They lobbied against the 9/11 First Responders Heath Care (Zadroga) Bill ... I actually had a Congressman from Florida inform me that Zadroga - 9/11 was a 'local N.Y. issue', to which I replied, "Yeah, just like the attack on Pearl Harbor was a 'local Hawaii issue'" ... The problem as I see it is that the Republican Party has been hijacked by very wealthy CEO's whose mission is to use the system to enhance the business interests of themselves and their corporate pals (They are also taking over the 'Tea Party'). The middle class is merely a source of funding to these arrogant 'businessmen'...
  16. It doesn't appear to me that 252 stopped before the building because they "were boxed in" but rather because the hydrant they hooked up to was the last one on the block and because they needed to keep the front of the building open for the truck. It appears to me that The Brothers did what they are trained to do ... they were confronted by a situation, they sized it up, they overcame the obstacles that were presented to them and got the job done ... Quickly.
  17. Wow! Considering the fact that 252 had water out the windows and the fire knocked down within a couple of minutes of arrival, it appears that your criticism is fairly harsh and uncalled for. It appears that 252 took the hydrant that was closest to the fire building, I don't see another hydrant on the block had they passed up the one that they hooked up to. I didn't see any truckies running, it did appear that a couple of firefighters were jogging toward 252's rig (probably firefighters from the 2nd due engine coming to assist with stretching the first line). I agree that reckless running at a fire scene could cause a slip / fall incident, but there does need to be an accelerated (albeit controlled) level of movement by responding personnel due to the rapidity of fire growth coupled with the dangers of smoke, heat and toxic gases on exposed victims as well as firefighters who are operating in the fire area as well as above it. To the Firefighters who operated at this incident, a job well done.
  18. May he rest in peace ... Condolences to his family and fellow officers ...
  19. Rest in peace Josephine and may God Bless You ... Thank you to D.C. Jay Jonas for being the class act that you are ... You are one of many who continue the great tradition of the F.D.N.Y. ...
  20. You've got that right!
  21. Almost correct, but no cigar ... It's a Tuna Salad injector. It's en-route to a local 'Subway' sandwich shop.
  22. I spent a lot of my career working in a very busy F.D.N.Y. Truck Company and finished off my last 6 years in the Rescue. I enjoyed (Spelled L-O-V-E-D) working in both companies. I did lot's of fire duty and worked at many unusual emergencies.I worked with some of the best, most knowledgeable firefighters while in both of these units. That being said, every firefighter anywhere who is worth their salt puts their life on the line every-time they go to work, regardless of how busy or slow their unit is. It's great to have company pride as long as we don't lose sight of the fact that we are all in the same business and should not be in competition.. . Stay safe Brothers ...
