  1. The Danes had a pursuit stopper for vehicles a few years ago. A folding arm extended from the front of a police vehicle and extended until it pierced the trunk of the vehicle being pursued. the tip expands and locks. The police vehicle then puts on the brakes and the pursuit ends. In a dangerous situation, tear gas can be injected into the pursued vehicle. When the poroduct was showed to the British police as potential customers, they openly laughed at the product thinking it was a joke. I guess that's why it never made it to the US.
  2. I love the “you or your heirs” part. If that doesn’t drive home the message, nothing will. Unfortunately as soon as you make something fool proof, along comes a more resilient class of fool.
  3. For the most part the public seems to be more concerned with garbage pickup then emergency services. I remember over the years, there were several instances were a municipality had to cut services due to budget shortfalls. There were two proposals, one was to reduce DPW. This would require the elimination of backyard garbage pickups and the leaves would be on the street longer. The second scheme was to reduce the police and fire staffing. There were more letters and complaints about the proposed changes to the garbage pickup schedule. Think about this, how many times is a fire alarm delayed because the owner provided the wrong information to their alarm company and the central station called the wrong fire department? Many people don’t even know the municipality that they live in. If 911 did not automaticlly route the call to the right PSAP, the problem would be more accute and we would be having a tread about "Why don't homeowners know who to call". Second example: How many CO alarms have been dispatched because the homeowner did not read the manual and can’t tell the difference between a low battery and an alarm? Now the box is beeping and what doe I do? Then, when you arrive, the family is inside watching TV with the windows closed and the heat or AC on? You would think that one would have double checked material that could save your life, but this seems that often this is not to be the case.
  4. There is one more advantage to shopping local. In a 24 hour period there have been assaults, shootings, pepper spray, and a suspicious package in a few of the big box stores. So much for "Tis the season to be jolly". Guess I have to bring my Glock with me on my next trip to Walmart.
  5. EVO 101: Park uphill of a burning vehicle.

  7. Let’s muck up the situation even more. Half the people in my town don’t know were they live. Land line 911 will correctly route the calls most of the time. But when they call direct or have their alarm systems installed, many give the wrong municipality to the alarm company. There have been a number of times were the call was bounced from one or more departments until it the correct town was hashed out. We have had a number of calls were after a prolonged delay, we arrived on the scene only to hear from the resident “What are you doing here, we don’t live in AB. The truth can be painful.
  8. I wish we had the small cameras when I was on the job. Today, you can buy small camera/DVRs cheep. They will record for a few hours without downloading. http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/hidden-pen-camera-video-recorder.html I would warn any one using such a device at work to check State law and the rules and regs before using a personal recorder. NYS permits such devices as long as one of the parties knows that thier conversation is being recorded. Other states and departments may be more restrictive. Also in Law Enforcement, if a video is used in an arrest , there is a chan of evidence and a copy has to be turned over to the DA and the defendant.
  9. Nah, FedEx: When it positively has to be there on time. Or so they say!
  10. Maybe the rocking of the ladder with the wind and the drone of the draffic on the bridge will lull him to sleep. Would be a shame if he dozed off and fell. One good thing, less paperwork.
  11. It is good that we can chuckle at this misguided individuals plight. However on a serious note, by this idiot’s actions, he is putting the lives of the responders and others at risk. Fortunately, this type of incident is a rarity. My thoughts and prayers are not with the protester but with the rescuers who have to put them selves in harms way waiting for this idiot to call it a day or have to rescue him.
  12. This fool only put his message on one side of the banner. The shots they showed only showed the back of his banner, the side without his message!
  13. Are you sure it wasn't a new type of bailout system?
  14. The car was never intended to be a low rider. But when he installed 27 car batteries and a 1.7 jillion megawatt alternator, it was more than the frame could hold. Cant wait to see what happens when he hits a pothole. Guess he should have waited for the Mr. Fusion power system to be invented.
  15. I am not always a fan of municipal administrations however, uniform standards are standards. The goal is that every member of the service can be readily identifiable, hence the uniform. The problem with bending the rules for a cause is while this cause may be a noble one, what do they say when the next group approaches for the same consideration down the road. If a child goes missing can the administration deny the request for wearing of the child’s picture on tee shirts to raise awareness of the missing child. If a friend or family has an affliction, do they allow another shirt in support? How about labor actions or the occupy Wall Street movement? I believe that while no one disputes the importance of breast cancer (or any other disease) awareness however there are other things that we can do to show our support. Uniforms should remain uniform and bending the rules would open a can of worms that the administration would have problems containing.
  16. About 30 years ago, a small plane crashed in long island sound. Several police boats and private craft responded. The emergency personnel assembled on shore and were ferried out to the site. Unfortunately only the dogs on board survived. This was mid summer and all of the boats were staffed and in the water. The local yacht clubs had launches and boats available. A lot of the resources on the sound are seasonal. While there may be a few boats in the water in the off season the majority are dry docked. If we look at the last disaster in the Hudson, while it occurred in the off season, the landing took place in the perfect spot for a water rescue. There were cameras form the pier on the plane as it landed and ferry boats on scene within 3 minutes. If the plane turned North and landed above the GW, the outcome may have been different.
  17. The killing of the American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki will instill a "sense of doom" in al-Qaida's surviving leaders, a senior American military official told The New York Times. The official, who was not named by the paper, said al-Awlaki's death was "critically important" and would send an important message to everyone in the terrorist network. He spoke as New York's police commissioner Ray Kelly said the city's force was on high alert in case al-Awlaki's followers tried to stage a retaliatory attack. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44739708/ns/world_news-mideast_n_africa/t/al-awlakis-death-will-instill-al-qaida-sense-doom-us-military-official-says/#.Toe1ZLK4xNA
  18. Not a bad idea. have you contacted the commissioner of DMV? Only bad part is that New York renewals are 8 years, the list of changes could be quite lengthy. DMV could mail you you the changes with your license or plate (only two years) renewal along with the type of plates they sell. Yes we get junk mail from DMV.
  19. Would you prefer names like XYZ 70% of the time VAC. Even the term EMS is not 100% correct as many EMS groups accept transports and transport non emergency patients. Using the above argument, we should drop EMS and change the name to ambulance service. We seem to have a long thread over words. None of us should be so literal. Many fire departments respond to more than fires. Does this mean we should change the name to emergency and non emergency service department? It seems like police is the only correct agency name. I know this sounds silly but in the world of truth in advertising and political correctness, this is what the world is coming to.
  20. A few years ago, I recall there was discussions asking were scanners legal? There is some case law that stated as long as the person(s) being intercepted did nothing to safeguard (scramble) their conversations and the radios were not used in the commission of a crime, scanners were OK. That is why many scanners used to pick up cell conversations. Congress eventually passed a law to prohibit scanner companies from including cell frequencies in their products. The question of weather intecepting scrambeled conversations is legal would probably be moot anyhow. With the modern digital algorithms available, it is doubtful that they could be broken short of having a super computer.
  21. I can hear the tones now, Engine xx respond to xxx for a leaking machine. I can't wait to hear this size up. What type of booms do you deploy? None, just send in the rookie with some pads and a mop.
  22. Calf. purchased 9 at 2 million each. No wonder the state is broke. Could have spared a few layoffs with 18 million. If communications are that important, pick up a few cans and a lot of string. Could have saved 17,999,991.
  23. Would make a nice traveling barbeque pit. You could roast a side of beef in the bomb container.
  24. http://www.lohud.com/article/20110902/NEWS02/109020369/Playland-park-ranger-suffers-broken-arm-3-others-hurt-confrontation-Bronx-man?odyssey=obinsite Four park rangers and two concession stand workers were injured at Rye Playland Thursday night, one suffering a broken arm, when they tried to subdue a Bronx man who turned violent, county police said. Many years ago, Playland had "specials" to patrol the park. I was one of them, we were uniformed seasonal peace/ police officers that were armed and carried night sticks. Many of us used this experience to transition into full time careers in law enforcement. In reading the postings it appears the that "specials" have been replaced by park rangers. One of the disturbing facts in both incidents at Playland is that rangers were injured and there was no report of the perps being pepper sprayed. I am not implying that there should be retribution but do these rangers carry any devices to protect themselves? Or is thier role to observe and report and hope help shows up in time? if this is the case It seems like it may be time to go back to the "specials".
