  2. I guess this is "progressive policing", keep the police in their cars with the lights on so everyone knows where they are. The bad guys see them coming and go in the other direction. This way there won’t be any confrontations.
  3. I guess that's more "socially acceptable" than stop and frisk and the Mayors plan to replace stop and frisk with good old fashioned police work seems to be working really well! In reading the article there was an interesting quote: “It’s really a joke,” a disgusted ESU source said. “We sit in our truck all night driving around, listening to music.” “City Hall is panicking,” he added, referring to a summer crime spike. The latest statistics show that shooting incidents continued to increase last week compared to the same period in 2013. The number of people shot jumped about 25 percent between July 15 and Aug. 10 compared to last year — climbing from 103 to 129. to 129.
  4. Remember the Exxon Valdez.
  5. In the 5th picture, on the drivers side, there is a large drum with a pump and hose attached. Is that to spray Vaseline on the rig to get out? By the way Boston has a station (not sure of the number) that is a landmark and they can't modify it. It stations a ladder and engine that have to be custom made due to the inability to modify the bays. Some times you are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Can't get a smaller engine and can't modify the building. Get out the Crisco and hope for the best.
  6. According to the article: We were asking for $5,000," he said. "I wish I could have had a collector come in and grab it." "Unless someone comes in to take it, a piece of history will be going to the scrap yard. I'll hate to see it go." Maloy said he's in no hurry to junk the vintage apparatus and is willing to hold onto the truck for a little while longer. "I'll leave it here until about October," he said. "After that it's going to the junk heap." "I'd probably take a dollar if someone offered to take it off my hands," he said with a joke. Anyone interested in acquiring the snorkel should contact Maloy at the Bedford Bedford Park Fire Department. His number is 708-563-4510. — Desplaines Valley News There still is hope of saving the truck!
  7. In NYS "Authorized Emergency Vehicles" have official official plates issued but are not required to display them. As the plates do not expire or have to be renewed. they do not have a window sticker like a normal registration. career or Volunteer it does not matter. Its up to the department to display the assigned "Official" or a custom plate.

  9. Gloves, We don't need no stinking gloves. If you were a wussy you had a pair of bright orange ones. Coats were made of Cotton Duck with silver reflector stripes, Nomex was unheard of (still have that coat). Riding the back step up 684 to the Katona Parade waiving to the people in cars. (The new guys were forced to ride in the hose bed.) Those were the days
  10. And you have never stopped at the scene of an accident on your way home? Also, I assume you were on scene to determine that they were not requested to help. It would be prudent to wait until the investigation is complete before we rush to judge. Sorry, I forgot that with the age of sensationalism media we can’t wait.
  11. The bus, empty of students, erupted in flames in suburban St. Paul, Minn. The driver, too, was uninjured but the bus nearly slammed into a fire truck as firefighters worked to put out the flames. 12. Google’s smart contact lens project is designed to measure the glucose content of the wearer’s tears, once every second. Theoretically, it could be a noninvasive way for diabetics to keep their blood sugar levels in check, rather than pricking their skin to sample their blood multiple times per day, or wearing a continuous monitoring device that’s stabbed into their side to tap into subcutaneous tissue. http://recode.net/2014/01/16/googles-latest-moon-shot-is-a-smart-contact-lens-for-diabetes-patients/ http://recode.net/2014/01/16/inside-google-xs-smart-contact-lens/ Looks like Dr Bones McCoy's Tricorder will be standard issue soon!
  13. CFLs contain Mercury. Lets see if the Hazmat calls increase. From EPA, They recomend that people download and print the folowing incase a bulb breaks: http://www2.epa.gov/cfl/cleaning-broken-cfl Before CleanupHave people and pets leave the room.Air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor environment. Shut off the central forced air heating/air-conditioning system, if you have one.Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb:stiff paper or cardboard;sticky tape;damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes (for hard surfaces); anda glass jar with a metal lid or a sealable plastic bag. During Cleanup DO NOT VACUUM. Vacuuming is not recommended unless broken glass remains after all other cleanup steps have been taken. Vacuuming could spread mercury-containing powder or mercury vapor.Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder. Scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder. Place the used tape in the glass jar or plastic bag. See the detailed cleanup instructions for more information, and for differences in cleaning up hard surfaces versus carpeting or rugs.Place cleanup materials in a sealable container. After Cleanup Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials, including vacuum cleaner bags, outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of. Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors. Next, check with your local government about disposal requirements in your area, because some localities require fluorescent bulbs (broken or unbroken) be taken to a local recycling center. If there is no such requirement in your area, you can dispose of the materials with your household trash. If practical, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the heating/air conditioning system shut off for several hours. If you have further questions, please call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
  14. Lawsuit filed against shuttered ambulance service that stranded hospitals in six states A six-state private ambulance service that shut down without explanation over the weekend was sued Tuesday for allegedly firing more than 2,000 paramedics and other emergency workers with no notice that they were losing their jobs. First Med EMS, based in Wilmington, N.C., abruptly folded its tent Friday and Saturday, leaving hospitals and other medical facilities scrambling for medical transportation options in more than 70 municipalities in Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. At least one municipality — Bertie County, N.C. — declared a state of emergency and said it also would pursue legal action against First Med. The company, which operated under the names TransMed, Life Ambulance and MedCorp, transported more than a half-million patients a year. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/12/10/21852954-lawsuit-filed-against-shuttered-ambulance-service-that-stranded-hospitals-in-six-states?lite
  15. In the New Jersey village of Ridgewood, Michael Feeney was a celebrity. He swapped campaign advice with the mayor. For a short time, he served as police chief. This Friday, he was to light the big Christmas tree downtown. He was 10 years old. Michael Feeney died last week after a four-year struggle with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. On Tuesday, the village honored him with a funeral with full police honors. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/12/03/21736522-full-police-honors-for-extraordinary-10-year-old-who-moved-a-village?lite
  16. All vehicles have a registration and plates. Emergency vehicles dont have to display them.
  17. We have a radio with DPW frequencies in each rig. We used to go off the county frequencies in a storm and use the DPW radios. Also, the EOC is in our building and we have DPW, Police as well as the county radios in service there.
  18. Looks like the issue isn’t resolved. http://www.streetsblog.org/2013/04/17/manhattan-cb-6-urges-mta-to-restore-blue-lights-to-select-bus-service/ Manhattan Community Board 6 has adopted a resolution in support of a state law to bring back flashing blue lights on Select Bus Service buses. The resolution also urges the MTA to explore options to restore the lights in lieu of legislative action. SBS buses went into service in 2008. The buses and their flashing blue lights — which help riders distinguish between SBS and local buses — operated without incident for four and a half years, until the MTA brought SBS service to Staten Island’s Hylan Boulevard. Last January, the lights were switched off after City Council Member Vincent Ignizio complained that motorists, himself included, were confusing SBS buses with emergency vehicles. Though an obscure state law limits the use of flashing blue lights to volunteer firefighters, no legal action was taken to get the MTA to stop using the SBS lights. A 2010 Daily News story about the regulation provoked no official response. No bus driver was ever ticketed for using the lights. An MTA spokesperson told Transportation Nation that the agency had received all of one complaint from the public, after the launch of the inaugural SBS line in the Bronx.
  19. Actually it took the death of a NYS trooper in a horrific rear end crash to move the law forward. The rear facing blue was a compromise to increase visibility of emergency vehicle and save lives.
  20. Interesting, I don’t think the FDNY will rename themselves APURSNY ( all-purpose urban response squad NY)
  21. The rebuild already has a motto: Jersey had "Stronger Than The Storm. The Mayor has proposed "Better Than The Blaze. Heard it this afternoon.
  22. The Dietz and Watson fire brings up a new concern: According to the incident commander: At first only the insulation in the roof was on fire but the energized solar panels kept firefighters from getting on the top of the building. "If we had a flat roof with nothing on top we could have gotten up and trenched, it's common practice but with all that power and energy up there, I can't jeopardize a guy's life for that," said Chief Ron Holt, Delanco Fire Department. With the growing popularity of solar panels, have any departments started formulating protocols for fighting fires were solar panels are present? They can present problems of their own. Do we know what is inside them? How will they react to flames? Many are reverse connected to the power grid as the location sells its excess output to the local power grid.
  23. From this picture, It looks like the IC made a good call. One would think that with the almost total obscuration, they would have installed some vents with fusible links for ventilation. But I guess no one ever thinks their place will burn.
  24. Bottom line is a working fire is whatever fire the incident commander determines it to be!
