  1. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The city's firefighter union is accusing the FDNY of cooking its response times by "covering up" the minute or so it takes for a 911 dispatcher to talk with someone who's reporting an emergency.

Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy on Wednesday referred to the FDNY's response times as a flat-out lie.

"They're trying to close 20 fire companies based on response times, that are absolutely, positively not true," Cassidy told the Advance Wednesday.

  3. When the Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps was founded in 1963, the organization’s single ambulance was housed in a barn and had to be pushed down a hill by volunteers before the engine would turn over.

Now, the corps boasts three well-running ambulances and occupies a two-story building on Bedford Road that underwent a renovation about five years ago.

The organization will celebrate its 50th anniversary June 1 with a spaghetti dinner, part of a series of events planned throughout 2013

  6. A YouTube clip taken moments after the train collision in Bridgeport shows the immediate aftermath of the crash. It was posted by a teenager who says he and his friends saw the crash from the Rampage skateshop near the accident.

WARNING: The video features raw footage at the time of the crash and lots of explicit language.

  7. As part of National Police Week the Yonkers police is sponsoring a free program to etch vehicle identification numbers on city residents’ car windows.

The process helps ward off car thieves, and some insurance carriers also give rate discounts, police said.

The VIN etching program will be held at the Yonkers Police Community Affairs Division between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday.

  8. where is Ft. Edwards? And what do they do with the sediment once it's dredged? What is it contaminated with?

It's a site they are using to dispense the sediment. It's 50 miles north of Albany. There's a barge unloading facility, sediment dewatering and treatment facilities as well as temporary staging areas. DEP acquired about 110 acres of vacant farmland. That was part of the GE development for the Hudson River Dredging Project. I don't know if GM will be using that same site or a different location.

    http://www.hudsondredging.com/about-the-project/

  9. Let me help you guys out alittle bit, when Sleepy Hollow when to start developing on the GM lot Tarrytown made a big stink that it would cause a massive increase in traffic and they went to court that was 2 years ago. Finally after the court decided it was crazy they threw the case out. Now they are dredging out the riverside to remove contaminated soil once the soil is removed building can start.

GM is actually paying for this too, the cost is estimated at $10 million and will take 2 years to complete. They were/are going to be removing about 0.8 acres worth of sediment.

Does anyone know if they are using the Fort Edwards site for offloading the sediment?

  10. According to the link noted above, Minden Air http://www.mindenair.net/minden/home.html is converting British Aerospace BAE-146 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BAe_146 jetliners into air tankers. The "About" section http://www.mindenair.net/minden/about.html of Mindenair.net states that BAE (British Aerospace) will continue support for this aircraft.

What brand/type of aircraft are they replacing it with?

According to the article I posted above (see controversy comment) 10 Tanker Air Carrier and Coulson Aircrane (USA) Inc. (same owner as Coulson Aviation) received contracts for the new planes.

  11. According to this article there appears to be some controversy over this whole thing.

Hours after the agency announced plans to award $158 million in contracts for seven tankers over five years, at least one business threatened to appeal the move.

The threat mimicked a similar contract dispute last year, which kept a seven-plane fleet from flying during one of the nation's busiest fire seasons. As a result, the nation relied heavily in 2012 on eight Defense Department C-130 aircraft and another fleet of tankers on loan from a Canadian/Alaskan partnership.

  12. A federal contract was awarded Tuesday to Douglas County-based Minden Air Corporation to supply the U.S. Forest Service with "next generation" air tankers that will replace the aging fleet.

Congressman Mark Amodei praised the U.S. Forest Service decision to award Minden Air Corporation the air tankers for wildfire suppression. The Forest Service is transitioning to the next generation air tankers to replace its aging “legacy” fleet.

I'm kinda getting tired of the northern stuff and wouldn't mind checking out some of the down county parades. There was a thread created a couple months ago regarding the 2013 parades but when I search for it, I come up empty.

  17. We're still looking for ways to make our template better. As much as I want to pack it with information, I don't want to slow down members trying to get it up quick;y. Is there a balance?

Not really. Those of us who care about the info we post in I/A's will take our time and make it as informative as possible. Those who don't and just want to get it up and only put a brief description will get it up faster. The one thing I would suggest is to remove the district and or maybe the weather tabs in the the template. I don't see the need for it.
