  1. Could have been from the volunteer days. There were 14 volunteer companies in Yonkers by the 1890s.

The only paid house ever on Warburton Ave., to my knowledge, was and is the current quarters of Engine 308, when they moved to 539 Warburton Ave. in 1933 from Woodworth Ave. were there were organized in 1907.

Actually the first house E308 responded from as a paid department came from an old city carriage house , located just north of the current house...it is actually still standing in the parking lot of school 25..we had plans on making it the yonkers fire museum,

but it was structurally too far gone...current quarters was built in 1980...our newest house....

  2. I'm wondering how many departments consider "life experience" when making hiring decisions?

This is the way I'm looking at it. Those of you that are 30, how do you look at how you were when you were 20? Life experience teaches us many things that are required for our jobs.

Take the Cop hired at 23 years old. Lived a sheltered life. Went to college and got a degree. Got hired right after graduation. It was his first job ever.

Is he going to be able to be as effective a Cop as a 28 year old who has held other jobs since he was 16, been through some of the trials of lives, has been in relationships, etc?

x635, this is a very interesting post...

I definitely agree that the new hire who has had life experience appreciates these jobs more when they

come on. A young member who has never held a job and comes on these jobs , (some starting at $80-100k) just

think that it works this way at all jobs, whereas the member with the experience knows better. This is not an

attack on the young guys coming on the job, but from what I have noticed from the past two classes that

have come on my department , these guys hae a sense of "it's all about me", and a "sense of entitlement".

And dont get me started on the texting, as youre explaining to them what to do..(I cant stand that).

  3. What's an even bigger joke is some of the comments to the article that the journal news ran by those who try to represent themselves as knowing what they're talking about...but in the end know absolutely nothing. Then again looking at the spelling and the grammar in the comments its no wonder.

this guy finn , isnt he the same guy who made racial remarks to another city worker?

  4. Not my area of expertise, but I did read somewhere that for every dollar of taxes a development adds to the tax base, it consumes $1.40 or so in service costs. Makes sense- 10 acres of woods pays a tiny amount of taxes, but requires NO services. 10 acres of stores and housing kicks in a lot of taxes, but demands a TON of PD, FD, water, sewer, sewage, signage, paving plowing etc. Not to mention, I would be certain that Yonkers gave this place a large tax break, so unlikely that there will be any real tax money production soon. But hey, the world needs more chain stores, movies and acres of paved lots.
