  1. MA DOT is sending 12 crews and I believe 20 pieces of equipment to help also.
  2. Ah, yes, similar ones on utility vehicles; just hadn't seen one with a cover on it.
  3. They might need a few out west this week. Any ideas what the black box is mounted to the top vertical (front) for the wing blade? Some kind of SONAR?
  4. Interesting discussion as to why the LDH was connected. I am not a trained FF nor a BFD member, but maybe SOP in hopes that the car can be towed in short order if that plug needs to be used as a secondary source? Driver of the BMW comes forward: http://www.whdh.com/story/27410452/bmw-owner-says-hes-sorry-for-blocking-south-end-fire-hydrant
  5. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
  6. I also like the idea. In middle school our health class included a CPR class, that was my first card. As defibs are more prevalent in public places, the more people trained in CPR and the use of the defib the better. In college, a requirement was swimming, another skill I think everyone should learn.
  7. Great story. Congrats to the LTs on the save.
  8. Airs tonight @ 9PM (on the East coast at least)
  9. I am not trained in the fire service, but this is another amazing job by Boston Fire Dept. Most students moved back into the area this past weekend, so the area is bustling with college students from Boston University (and other area colleges). This building is on a dead-end street which had to be a major challenge to the FD. (Good thing this was not the middle of winter, Ladder 14 probably won't make it down the street). News reports said it went to 9-alarms. Six firefighters injured. http://www.wcvb.com/news/massive-9alarm-fire-rips-through-allston-apartment-building/27871850#!bPBkTf
  10. I think Steward saw him and went to go close and even "spray" him with dirt. The reason I say this is, looking at the motion of the car and the audio of the video, it seems like Steward "goosed" the accelerator just before Ward was struck. I also don't understand how NASCAR thought it would be okay to put him on the track on Sunday. I don't know if there is bad blood between the two; I agree that Ward should have never left his vehicle, but Steward is a menace to the sport. It's not the "good ole days" where car racing is lawless. I have never like Steward, I hope more video of the incident comes out. My thoughts and prayers to the Ward family. This was a completely avoidable and senseless death.
  11. I always assumed it was a carry over from the vintage automobile, which initially didn't have a roof. It may have been a "luxury" to have an enclosed riding area (remember the tumbler seats on some of the old Fords) and cost, why spend the extra money on a roof for fire apparatus? How many incidents were they responding to back then, hardly like today when a single company responds to multiple alarms a day. Plus, if the weather was bad, they had turnout gear.
  12. I was holding off on posting this pending the actual cause of the situation, but as of this morning's new, no data on the hazmat. http://www.whdh.com/story/25956195/custodian-found-dead-after-hazmat-situation-in-plymouth
  13. How is this video gaining so much traction? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/07/helmet-camera-firefighter-perspectuve_n_5552718.html
  14. That's one way to beat the bridge traffic on his way to the Bronx.
  15. http://blog.suny.edu/2014/06/volunteer-firefighters-eligible-for-free-suny-degree/ "Great news for volunteer firefighters in New York: the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York, also known as FASNY, offers up to 100% tuition reimbursement at a New York community college by maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in a volunteer fire company for up to 80 college credits–ultimately, an Associate’s degree."
  16. Pretty neat. They are just cruisin' along there. I am guessing it's not that much weight since they are not running several axles.
  17. A generous donation indeed. Did the agencies have any input into what was to be purchased, or did the donor say they wanted to purchase "a CPR machine" and it was up to the agency to pick the mfg/model? If I remember right, LVAC benefited from a generous donation in the past and it was used for a large purchase. Someone can help me, was it for AEDs?
  18. I was thinking the same thing this morning when I heard this. How many people would have shrugged their shoulders and walked away? No detail is too small anymore.
  19. Does NYS still have the Jr License in which a minor is not allowed to operate a motor vehicle during certain hours (with some exceptions)? It is ultimately the parents job to raise their child, instill on them the values and priorities of life. Education should be near the top. But organizations and employers should not foster an environment that challenges them. What 17 or 18 year kid would turn down a confirmed fire or a PIAA with extrication over a couple hours sleep? I know I won't turn it down and didn't turn it down. I assume departments with Jr members require consent forms. How often do they need to be re-signed?
  20. I think the show title takes some artistic license. I think I remember a statistic on the show where the injury rate on the job is 100%. Meaning if you are a king crab fisherman, you will get injured on the job, not a matter of "if" it is "when". I forget the fatality rate, but it was scary high.
  21. Are there other areas where EMT/FR have approval to use Narcan? An increasing number of LEO have access to it, but it seems EMS is lagging behind. http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2014/03/21/christie-approves-emts-giving-overdose-treatment/
  22. I still use traditional oil and change it every 5,000 miles (makes it easy to remember). The owners manual recommends 7,500 miles. Synthetic oils can go 10-15,000 between changes, from what I have read. Changing oil every 3,000 is for harsh driving conditions.
  23. I am not a physician, but there seems to be little down-side if used properly: "There are no ill effects of naloxone, Lavelle said. If it is given to someone who is not overdosing, it would have no effect, he said. Naloxone provides an almost instant reversal for someone who has taken too much of a strong anti-pain medication or heroin, officials said." http://www.app.com/article/20140228/NJNEWS14/302280074/Heroin-NJ
  24. I wonder the same thing. Where I worked, they had them in several rigs, then stopped installing them. Didn't make much sense, it probably came down to cents. (Sorry for the pun)
  25. RIP. Thoughts and prayers to the department, family and friends.
