  1. Boston Firefighters given new schedules to curb sick-day abuse

Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph E. Finn, in his first major initiative since taking the job in July, is moving to tighten the work schedules of the city’s 1,400 firefighters to eliminate rampant misuse of sick time and ripe-for-corruption swapping and selling of shifts.

  3. Tuckahoe may not seem like the type of community where cops would need military-grade assault rifles.

But village Police Chief John Costanzo, whose department received five M16 rifles for free last year through a federal program, said one may have thought the same of Aurora, Colorado, Newtown, Connecticut, and many other quiet towns that have seen a "high incidence of active shooters."

"I think we want to equip and arm our police officers sufficiently," Costanzo said. "I think law enforcement in general needs to be prepared for these incidents and ... have the tools in place to protect the public."

  4. The Disappearing Volunteer Firefighter

By ANDREW BROWN and IAN URBINA

The New York Times AUG. 16, 2014

IN most places in America, when a fire breaks out, a volunteer shows up to put it out.

But the ranks of volunteers are dwindling. What was once an iconic part of American life is losing its allure, in part because the work — some would say the calling — is a lot less practical than it used to be.

  5. Is there a provision in the LAW that gives veteran's hiring preference? This is clearly just BS small town politics as usual.

There should be! This guy was the perfect candidate for any department, and Sleepy Hollow should have been honored he chose them. In fact, he passed through the entire SHPD hiring process....yet two members of the board declined to actually complete the process, and are the same ones at odds with his sister, a Village Board member they are at odds with.

This isn't just "BS small town politics as usual", this is an ongoing pattern of corruption in Sleepy Hollow politics that rears it's head regularly.

  6. According to this letter to the editor from this Bronxville resident, Eastchester FD doesn't want to comply with FOIL

Eastchester Fire District is a source of never-ending logical impossibilities. Recently, I followed up on a request to determine who had been appointed EFD's FOIL Access Officer. My recent FOIL request was ignored (denied).

  7. Two Recent Fires Highlight Volunteer Role July 11, 2014

    Pushing back against misconceptions

    By Michael Turton

Philipstown’s fire departments in Cold Spring, Garrison, North Highlands and Continental Village are used to facing some heat — though not always at a fire. Public debate over fire hall construction, municipal oversight, possible consolidation of services and fire company budgets has been red hot at times in recent years. But there was no debate about the value of local fire protection on Monday evening (July 7), when five area fire companies quickly responded and worked in unison to fight a blazing inferno at a home on High Street in Cold Spring.

  8. The village of Mamaroneck Fire Department was justified in expelling a former fire chief after he was verbally abusive toward firefighters and failed to follow direct orders at the scene of an emergency, endangering himself and possibly others, a state appellate court has found.
