  1. See NFPA guidelines. BTW...the number is 4.
  2. Irvington had an engine that carried 4 inch hose back in the 70's and 80's. I don't believe that they have it anymore. Brewster had a hose truck that carried 5 inch hose on a reel. That too is out of service I believe.
  3. FireCapt has it right. Lets not buy something for the sake of tradition just because we have "always" had. Us e the $$ to invest in education or better safety equipment. ...and using the $$ just because it is in the budget is poor management. Use the $$ because you need something worthwhile,...not because it's left over !
  4. I was the officer in a truck years ago and pulled up to a job. I called the dispatcher and said "This fire is out....out the doors and out the window." 'Nuff said. Plain English sends the message clearly and distinctly to the dispatcher and all fire ground units. Let's cut out the emotion charge of saying "10-75" and simply state "Working Fire."
  5. A correction to previous reports: De Niro denies footing Yonkers man's legal bills in cop killing By BILL HUGHES whughes@thejournalnews.com THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: December 17, 2005) Lawyers for Robert De Niro issued a denial yesterday that he has any involvement with paying for the legal expenses of Lillo Brancato Jr., the Yonkers man charged in connection with the fatal shooting of an off-duty New York City police officer one week ago. In a letter faxed to The Journal News, attorney Thomas Harvey explicitly refuted a published statement made by Brancato's former attorney saying he had turned over the case to a different lawyer, and that De Niro had agreed to pick up the expense for his one-time protégé, whose first film credit was alongside De Niro in the 1993 film "A Bronx Tale." "Mr. De Niro's sympathy lies exclusively with Officer Enchautegui's family and his fellow officers," Harvey wrote. "Mr. De Niro did not assist, offer to assist or even speak with anyone associated with the individuals charged with killing the heroic police Officer Daniel Enchautegui." In an interview Thursday with The Journal News, Brancato's former lawyer, Harvey Kaminsky, said De Niro had "stepped up" and offered to pay for Brancato's defense with the stipulation that famed defense attorney Mel Sachs handle the case. Reached by phone last night, Sachs said he had no financial agreement with De Niro to represent Brancato. Kaminsky did not return several phone calls. "Mr. De Niro has never spoken with either Harvey Kaminsky or Mel Sachs, and they did not represent him," Harvey wrote. "Moreover, he has not spoken with the accused killer in some time."
  6. In the volunteer days in Mt. Vernon, the horns would blow two rounds for a box alarm. You would then look up in your "little red book" where the alarm was and respond accordingly. Actually, my Grandmother knew where the box was and would tell me before I could look it up. Eventually I caught on on how to do this. If it was a 2nd or subsequent alarm, one round of the box would be blown followed by single rounds of the assigned companies. If it was a minor alarm, two rounds of the company signal would be blown. Oh....and if there was no school, it would be music to my ears to hear 4 rounds of "9 - 9 - 9" blown.
  7. That's not quite correct. The TWU has called for a strike against some of the remaining private bus companies in NYC who have been working without a contract for a couple of years.
  8. Anybody remember the FDNY "Superpumper." Could knock down walls with it's deck gun !!!
  9. I'm sure that all of the facts are not being presented in the news report, but.......it seems to me that the firefighters who responded on the apparatus should have had their turnout gear completely on and their SCBA slung and ready to go. BTW - where were the officers and/or Chief officers. Would have been nice to hear what they had to say.
  10. Gold leafing is VERY expensive. You're better to take the $$ that you would have paid for the gold leafing, use reflective vinyl and improve the equipment on the rig.
  11. One second you have 5 bars and the next second you have none. What is up with that ? Also, NEXTEL has significant dead spots along major highway corridors for which there is no excuse. Try using your NEXTEL on the Hutch between Weaver St. & Mamaroneck Ave. 684 is intermittent also from the Hutch to exit 3. And what is up with 684 just south of exit 4 (Rt. 172 - Mt. Kisco). It's like Area 51 there. the signal just dies !!!
  12. I hope that there is no thinking of disobeying an oficer's order. Just do what the oficer tells you to do. Let the white hats sort out and defend their decision.
  13. HHhhhhmmmmm. No seatbelt. !....and did you learn about the emergency fuel shutoff valve specifically designed for firefighter use ?...aka RLS valve.
  14. Garritty light and leather New Yorker. Been using the combo for over 30 years. How good does it get !
  15. In the "old days," we used to take a ride out to Cairns and take the helmet right into the afctory for repair. The rep would say go get a cup of coffee and come back in an hour.
  16. Show had alot of potential, but was very, very slow moving. What was a 60 minute shopw could have been cut to 30 minutes..
  17. Let's think about this for a minute....Government should be involved in promoting street drag racing ? Is that what you mean ?
  18. Technically speaking, Chris, you're absolutely correct. The "60" is implied (read...silent).
  19. Re: SP at YRR...I'm not sure if that is true.
