  1. He needs a good ol fashion ass whooping is what he needs. Or perhaps a lesson on what that memorial stands for and what it means to most of us. I did plenty of stupid s**t when I was younger, believe me. But I could never understand people who destruct property or downright disrespect memorials and other sacred things.
  2. Glad the brothers will be ok. Could have been much, much worse had that engine not been blocking the scene. A rig can be replaced, humans can not.

  11. Date: 04/01/14 Time: 1620hrs Incident Type: Structure Fire Location: 41 Vails Gate Heights DR District: Vails Gate Units: VGFD Cars 1, 2, 3, E478, T482, E481, E479, R480, City of Newburgh (FAST), New Windsor (Engine), Winona Lake (s/c Truck), Washingtonville (FAST), New Windsor PD, New Windsor EMS Description: Fire in a middle-of-the-row 3 story attatched wood frame p/d 1620hrs-Base-5 alerting Vails Gate for the reported rear porch on fire, 41 Vails Gate Heights Dr. While en-route, smoke was seen from several blocks away. VGFD Car-2 arrived and advised of heavy fire in the rear of #41. While approaching the scene, Car-1 noted that fire was quickly spreading up the rear wall. Car-2 quickly confirmed that fire had extended into the structure. Fire had run up the wall and auto-exposed into the structure, as well as the cockloft. Command then transmitted a 2nd Alarm, bringing the City of Newburgh as FAST and (1) Engine from New Windsor to the scene. E478 was 1st due and laid in from a hydrant. It's crew led off through the front door with a line where they encountered heavy fire and Colliers mansion-like conditions. T482 arrived 2nd with part of its crew going to the roof, while other members assisted in opening up and line placement. E481 arrived and stretched a 1 3/4" line to the #2 floor where they also encountered heavy fire. Members also stretched a 3rd line up to the 3rd floor. E479 conducted a reverse lay from E481 to a hydrant on a separate main. E479's crew then stretched a line into exposure #2. Washingtonville's FAST was requested to the scene as Newburgh would be put to work. Washingtonville responded with their Truck and set-up their aerial on the 1-2 corner. They had ample manpower which enabled them to maintain a FAST, as well as provide a crew to open up and go to the roof. Newburghs crew was tasked with stretching a line into the #4 exposure. With fear that the fire would run the cockloft, Winona Lake was special-called to the scene with their tower ladder. Fortunately, the bulk of the fire was k/d upon their arrival.

  13. Wow, what a cluster f**k! As other members have stated, this can obviously happen in any sized dept. But this is a large, decently staffed metropolitan fire department. In my opinion, there was way to much unnecessary radio traffic when the channel should have been cleared for the Mayday. The IC states on numerous occasions for members to "come on outside" for face to face PAR. Hey Chief, there's probably a pretty damn good reason the member making the Mayday isn't coming out. Lets face it, hearing the transmission "mayday mayday mayday" is probably the worst thing you'll ever hear on a fire ground. But it is something we all need to be prepared to handle, regardless of the size of your FD, career or volunteer. Members need to be trained in self-escape methods, as well as knowing when and how to transmit a Mayday. I know its very easy for me to type this on a computer. Luckily i've never had to transmit a mayday and i pray i never will have to. Being in such a position must be a very, very scary moment. The poor guy making the mayday call must have been thinking "WTF" while listening to the radio transmissions. I couldn't imagine having to call a mayday and then listening as it seems there is no clear plan on coming to my aid. Ironically, my FD conducted a drill on calling the mayday just last week. We went over several case studies, including the Black Sunday fire and listening to those transmissions. We also went over some of the acronyms including LUNAR; Location, Unit, Name, Assignment and Resources that may be needed to rescue the downed member. This is something that needs to be drilled and trained on, as often as possible. Include calling a mayday during simple drills and when you re-cert in your bail-out procedures. Unfortunately we seem to be re-active in many aspects of the fire service. At the very least, we need to pay attention to these incidents and make every damn attempt we can to learn from them. Stay safe

  19. Understand 100% Pat, it's a damn shame. Thanks for your honesty.
  20. Sir, I totally agree with you. However, my point was not that parades cause depts to have poor training and/or response times. My point was that MANY vfds can muster 15-20+ members for parades, but are lucky to get 5 show up for training or alarms. We've all seen this or know what I'm referring to. If not, maybe your dept is in good shape or you're blind to the issues. It just pains me to hear the same depts regularly re-sounding for manpower for alarms, including structure fires. In short, if you can muster up 20+ men for a parade, but can't get rigs out the door for alarms, you better damn well be re-evaluating your existence. Stay safe
  21. Pat, has anything been done to ensure this doesn't occur in the future? I highly doubt it. But silly me, alarms don't occur during parades. Time for depts to wake the hell up and get their priorities straight. We've beaten this topic to death over and over again. Look, if your dept has their s**t together and regularly trains and can handle their alarms with proper manpower and in a timely response, then a parade here and there isn't a big deal. However, this is unfortunately not the case for an overwhelming number of departments.
  22. I'm no longer involved in EMS and know nothing about the Chester situation. Obviously it's unfortunate when a VAC is shut down, but there must be valid reasons, no? Either way, I'm just happy to see that there is EMS coverge still being provided to the community. Some people may not like it or have bruised egos and hurt feelings, but so be it. At least coverage is being provided. If I needed an ambulance, I'd expect one to show up in a timely manner. Having an MLSS rig there would certainly increase the chances of getting an ambulance to an emergency in a reasonable response time.
