  1. Chief,

Have you added the second custom table for the South Zone? See Custom Tables at RadioReference.com. The second table will allow your scanner to track the 470.2000MHZ freq which seems to be the new "primary" freq used for the South Zone. If you only have the table with 476.0, your scanner will not be able to track the new 470.2000MHz freq.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Steve.

We were able to correct our Uniden scanners.

We are still having software programming problems with our Radio Shack scanners. The software doesn't seem to allow a second table.

    Thanks,

    Syd

  2. I just wanted to take a minute to thank all the dispatchers at Westchester County Fire Control (60 Control) for all their hard work and patience throughout the last 48 hours. It's hard enough to juggle a couple of calls at the same time, let alone multiple calls by multiple agencies for a prolonged amount of time. Great job 60 Control Dispatchers you continue to impress the responders with your knowledge and professionalism on the radio at all hours of the day or night.

    THANK YOU AGAIN

I agree Chief, you've said it all.

Thanks 60-Control for all that you do on a consistent basis.

  5. Was Elmsford actually there or were they asked to leave and go standby in Fairview? I've heard conflicting stories...

Prior to the Babbitt Court address being confirmed, presumably due to incomplete information being received by cell phone call(s), 60-Control dispatched the Elmsford Fire Dept to the vicinity of Route 9-A and Paulding St. for a possible structure fire.

Once the correct address and actual fire was confirmed, off Route 9-A, just south of the Elmsford Fire District line, E-237 responded to the scene (after checking with the Incident Commander) and L-55 relocated to Fairview Fire Headquarters (60-Control dispatch: Our normal assignment on a Fairview 2nd alarm).

The E-237 crew operated at the scene, with the other units, until the fire had been brought under control; at which time they were released by the Incident Commander.

L-55 remained at Fairview Fire Headquarters until most units had returned to service; they were then released by the Incident Commander.

I hope this clarifies our role in this fire.

  9. The Mt. Pleasant Police Dept. took delivery of a Hurst Tool spreaders and power unit in the Spring of 1976, I believe, if my memory serves me correctly.

A group of us received training from the Hurst Tool Company rep; and we then trained our own people, even producing our own training video.

The unit was housed in the retro-fitted trunk of a patrol vehicle, which was equipped with heavy duty rear-end suspension.

Mutliple units were always dispatched to serious MVAs, so assistance in handling the equipment was never an issue.

A little primitive, yes, but it served the department well very for many years, prior to the local Fire Depts assuming the role.

While techniques have certainly changed over the years, alot of what I learned back in those early years, still serves me well today.

  10. Elmsford FD uses PPV regularly, but like with any equipment, it must be trained on and used correctly.

This past summer we cleared a medium smoke condition throughout a 3-story office building in a matter of minutes with proper fan placement and proper opening of doors and windows.

We have gas powered and electric PPV fans. My preference is electric, because it's more versatile.

At next year's Lt. Andy Fredericks Seminar, Los Angeles Battalion Chief John Mittendorf will be speaking about PPV ventilation.

  11. On behalf of the Officers and Members of the Elmsford Fire Department, I would like to thank all who attended the Lt. Andy Fredericks Seminar yesterday.

I think it was one of the best to date, with two great speakers, 400 firefighters attending and a sold out vendor hall.

It was really special having new Firefighter Andy Fredericks, Jr. in attendance, as well.

    Thanks once again.

Hope to see all of you next year, February 6th, when Battalion Chief John Mittendorf, Los Angeles Fire Department, retired, will be speaking about Ventilation and the 10 Common Mistakes on the Fireground and How to Avoid Them.

    Stay safe,

    Syd Henry, Chief

  14. Hey Everyone,

I was wondering in your agency whether it is fire, ems or pd if you have an established wellness program?

    Mike,

This is a great time of the year to bring up this subject, with many people making New Year's resolutions to lose weight, get into shape, give up smoking, etc.

With heart attacks being the number one killer and firefighting being a very strenuous job, firefighters should be especially concerned about their physical conditioning.

I'll watch with interest for any and all positive suggestions.

Some departments host Weight Watchers meetings, others reimburse for gym memberships. My particular company has a nicely equipped gym of its own in the basement.

A formalized Wellness Program would the best.

Happy New Year & Stay Safe,

    Syd Henry

    Elmsford FD

  15. No, it was the ice skating rink first. When I was a Town Camp Counselor in the mid-seventies, we used to take the kids there. The place is now Bloomingdale's furniture outlet.

For a brief time, when it was a skating rink, it was the New York Rangers practice facility.

After practice it was not uncommon to see the Rangers' players in local restaurants.
