  1. We have no problem with our aerial and it serves us well. We saw its jacking capabilities with the Yonkers specs and felt it was a great fit for us. As a member of our truck commitee I agree with Izzy that you get what you spec. It pays to have qualifield people in this process.

Have you operated a Smeal pumper or aerial before? I have and we have not encountered a problem with thier apparatus. Remember, what the truck committee specs is what you get.

  2. Ill take the over.If Smeal is still providing the aerials for Ferrara then the rigs will have to be driven to Nebraska where the ladder is to be built and mounted then to Louisiana for final assembly. This whole process might take some time for a large order if both companies don't scale back on some orders.

Either way, I think it's a safe bet that you will not see a Ferrara aerial in the FDNY fleet for some time. We'll start with a year, who wants the over/under?

  3. From what I remember this rig wasnt delivered with doors. It has alot of work done over the years and I thought the half doors were an add on, I could be wrong

  4. I wonder what peope use as the basis of thier choice?

    Is it looks?

    Is it the name?

Is it the fact that some major dept uses them so thats why?

What about maintenance, how well do they hold up? In my career I have seen a ladder fail because a manufacture forgot to recall a defective design. I have also seen 10 year old frame rails rust so bad that the vehicle may have to be scraped. Also rigs that leaked everytime it rained. And another brand that the radiators fall out every 16 months.

In the past 11 months I have worked with 2 different manufacturers to build an engine and a rescue. The experiences were night and day.

One I would buy from again and again. They were professional, got the job done well with very minimal issues. The other was very painful, we got what we wanted, but not without major effort on our part.

I suspect that the majority of posters have never actually purchased apparatus. It changes your perspective about companies. Since most components are the same from one manufacturer to the next, the bigger issue is how they perform and how they support their product.

Eng. 6 was reported to be very reliable when Blacky and Scout was the hourse power.

Let me guess, was the Rescue more painfull?

  5. Chris. The difference between it being your vehicle and the government's is that tax dollars pay for the latter. You can buy a car and add 100k worth of lights and sirens to it. No one would complain - it's your money after all. But if the government spends that money, which could be going to better use, then it becomes a problem. I personally think it's a waste of money.

We dont know who the vehicle is for so its all speculation anyway.

  6. Let me see if I get this straight... If this was my truck and I tricked it out this way it would be OK but if it is an official vehicle to be used by emergency responders that would be ridiculous?

Have you looked at most emergency vehicles these days? They're comparably equipped. So the base vehicle is the Denali package, perhaps there's a reason for the power that we don't know about.

Since we don't know who owns or operates it, or why it is equipped as it is, how can we judge the ridiculousness?

Chris, I have to agree with you and an earlier post. This vehicle has a luxury and performance package for a reason, and alot of horsepower was added here. Seems to me (my opinion),that some VERY HIGH rnking official and asscociates might be in transit and it probably needs to try to outrun a threat if necessary. With the constant terror threats these days, I understand.
