  1. The difference is you still have a job and the union has to still provide benefits.
  2. As of june 8th one batt riding out of fortfield ave if both batt spots are vacant and city has to pay o.t. to fill spots. If batt is not available, officer on scene from truck or engine becomes i/c resulting in one less company. Possible scenario, L71 closed along with E312 and safety batt and one battalion riding out of station 12 and one rig assumes i/c duties. Interesting!
  3. Safety division is closed as of today!! Still doing ems but who knows what the future holds.
  4. Two battalions covering entire city both averaging up to 3,000 runs each if my memory serves me. Batt 1 covers the north and south city line from west side of city all the way to the saw mill river pkwy and then some. Batt 2 covers the other half where all the parkways and 87 is located. They are constantly on these roadways for mva's.
  5. It looks like a challenge for electricians running wire as well as plumbers doing piping. Less fire spread in voids but will this deck of cards type construction fail after intense fire?
  6. Dunkirk. Fredonia and jamestown are the paid depts out of 27. Jamestown hired two or about to off the last list! Good luck!
  7. I was browsing thru my red alert and calculated 20 structure fires since 3/23. Five were 2nd alarms and one was a 3rd. Five of the days had multiple jobs going on. It wouldn't surprise me if we still get cut. They just dont care!
  8. The only thing that this thread is going to accomplish is a percentage increase of ffs getting speeding tickets from troopers. The discussion should be focused on the lack of manpower on the fire dept.
  9. With the police alarms, its usually a home owner forgetting to type in the alarm code in the time alloted or forgetting their alarm is even activated therefore setting it off. Much different than faulty equipment or burnt popcorn.
  10. The u.s. justice dept should be ashamed of themselves. We are talking about a position where lives and property are at stake. We all know the smartest officers are not always the best leaders but ill take chances then with someone who was given the job. Lets face it, not everyone can get into law school or med school. And the same should hold true for the career side of the fire service.
  11. There really isnt any management in the dept that are not essential for running day to day operations. A commisioner, chief of personnel, chief of special ops, training, and fire prevention. We had one officer in charged of training in the past. For a 450 plus department. You think he had a workload? 99 percent of our staff are in front line positions. You cannot run any department efficiently without any support staff. If we doubled our staff positions tomorrow, it still is would not be enough. By the way, the school busing costs approx 40 million dollars a year and causes lots of unnecessary traffic along with increasing our response times.
  12. Like our former deputy mayor who manipulated the law to squeeze another $40,0000.00 out of the city before he left. Could have paid for half a ff salary for a year. Good riddance!!!!!
  13. Keep in mind how easy it would be to exceed the speed limit in a personal vehicle and miscalculate a curvey road in a rural area. Statistics also show a great number of water tankers taking turns too fast resulting in loss of control. Nfpa has a 9 yr study from 1998 to 2007 breaking down statistics on firefighter fatalities in vehicles. Pretty interesting reading. Do a google search!! Speed is the primary factor and lack of safety belts in a majority of the fatalities.
  14. How is it possible that the majority of ffs killed in the line of duty from mv accidents are volunteers in their personal vehicles when they are supposed to obey all traffic laws? Wouldnt that make them safer as opposed to an emergency vehicle that has less stringent laws to follow?
  15. They plan on putting in a class in the next couple of weeks. Train hard for the physical. Lots of guys retiring within the next four years. Good luck!
  16. How about the guys who paid into the system for 30 yrs and and failed to collect a single check or for a couple of years. I know quite a few. I think ill retire to a state with no income tax and maybe become a reverend or open a church for more tax benefits along with my ponzi scheme.
  17. Great point. I remember one tour in the summer we (r1) had a run across town to bronxville p.o. almost hit two deer near sara Lawrence college. Ten minutes later back in our 1st due district, the sound of gunshots. Talk about extreme. Gotta love it! Granite counter tops, sub zero fridge and a viking stove would look great at the squad. Lol.
  18. They have five members that are city firefighters according to the article. I am speechless.
  19. How does a dept with one station and population of 30,000 maintain such a significant lead? Weird. Something not right! You r right. I know the dept suffered massive cuts and prob have lots of public support. Still have some doubts tho!

  22. What is awesome is the response time and the outcome of the fire. The tactics not so great but i am sure they will learn something from watching the video. Great example how important response time and manpower really is.
  23. My wifes cousin works as a flight medic up in boston. They do helicopter, ambulance and fixed wing aircraft tours. Not sure if private or municipal.
  24. I wonder how they plan on saving 1 million from this merger? Especially if they plan on taking all the officers and making them county officers. Which I hope they do.
