  1. While on this topic, what Depts. out there do carry the longer 45' to 50' extension ladders on their truck cos. still. I know we don't anymore. The longest is 39' and sometimes I wish it did have tormentors. Give me back my 2 section 35'. 2 guys could throw it up in a pinch.

Pelham Manor carries a 50 on Tower Ladder 3, last time it was used was at The Biltmore fire.

  2. In most of the combo depts, the duty officer is on the line or helping stretch in until more manpower arrives, either being vols, off duty men or mutual aid. He is also the IC. Not the best way to work but thats part of the job in small depts. As all career guys know, manpower is non-negotiable. We keep asking but towns take there chances. Is a county dept the answer? Maybe it is but until then, mutual aid will be used and sometimes abused.

  3. I attended some of the Westchester 2000 meetings and after carefull thought all I could think of is the fighting over who's gonna be the big Chief.

It seemed to me that no city in the end would be willing to go all the way with it. And Yonkers was there ONLY to help so they werent going with the program so I knew this is not going to fly.

Sad but true the FD is always gonna be a red-headed step child.

Were still using a Mutual Aid system set up in the 40's , most cant communicate. And we dont even drill together, but yet ask for instant help on a constant bases.

You are absolutely correct. Who will be the chief, what about deputies captains, etc. What happens with the union contracts? Will the residents accept a one engine house when they are used to 2 and 1 responding. There are many questions and not many answers given by the big shots involved.

  4. To build on Nate's comment, it is a rare occurence that Bronx companies go north. It's also a pretty time consuming process.  Before I can send anyone, I have to get permission from the COD or Citywide Command Chief. Aside from one automatic aid Box on the BRP, that's it. However, if I have something that I think may be on the side of the Westchester departments that we border, I make it a point to give that department a courtesy call to let them know we are responding to an incident that may be in their neck of the woods.

    JBE

You may give a courtesy call but nobody else does. FDNY works many times in our district and we don't even know they are in town.

  5. Having started buffing in 1973, I remember walking to Pelham Manor's house weekly from Co-op City where I lived. The all Mack CF house with the PD next door. Yes, Pelham Manor is an affluent community, but the runs and workers numbers probably dont justify buying a new rig, as far as the town is concerned. (Although I've seen that darn aerialscope up in the air more than a few occasions recently here on EMTBRavo, thanks Nate). Hey, I'd like to see a new rig too, but if it can pass the pump test.... One question for you experts, will it replace the other CF engine or the Spartan engine?

Side note: PM has the best pizza( 4 corners) and a pretty darn good Japanese steakhouse (Edo) !!

it will replace the other mack engine

  6. ok i see we have some forum going again- as mentioned a few times here ,training- as mentioned in my original post it is important to learn from the training that we recieve for those of you who posted here that work with me you know how some of the guys drive. we have all rode with them. if one person reads this post that is new to driving a rig and they learn 1 thing from all of us then we did our job. the question out there is are we all getting that training? like everything else experience can go along way. people can learn from others experience especially when it comes to driving a rig. maybe i should not have mentioned CDL and just left it at a question if driver training is adequate or not. TPWS- ah never mind (LOL). take an oil deliveryman who drives his truck daily and compare it to a guy that drives a firetruck 2-3 times a week, who would you feel more comfortable with? probably the oil man now that you need to buy oil and you might get a break per gal. (only kidding here we are friends) anyway- keep going with this because alot has been said already. hudson

Bigger city paid jobs have a chauffer school. Small combo jobs the guys are taught to drive from day one on the job. They continue to drive until they are qualified and then become chauffers. They still learn on the job. People need to realize we still have to obey the rules of the road. We just can't blow red lights and stop signs. This is where guys get into trouble.
