  1. The only company that offers a Sterling Chassis is Wheeled Coach with the MAV series, however it's the bigger truck sized chassis. As of now there are no manufacturers offering the Sterling Bullet as an option, but I'm sure over the course of time it'll start to appear as an option.
  2. We have them on our PD cruisers and ambulances. It sounds like a power sander and shakes everything in its path. It's a great tool to have at intersections and has been very effective in getting traffic to yield. http://www.wgal.com/video/14493898/index.html?taf=lan
  3. I've also noticed the Westchester County Haz-Mat truck is also in a lot of children's books
  4. I've been working on a HO scale railroad for a few months now. It's been a nice escape from work and everything else, but it's also a challenge, you get an idea of what you want to do, but then you make a small change to one part and then next thing you know you're redoing everything. A friend from the firehouse who is very much into trains and model railroading just laughs and reminds me that a model railroad is never finished and is always a work in progress. Never the less, its been very rewarding and it is always a great escape when you need one.
  5. It seems to me that the Rumbler is designed for approaching major intersections and isn't intended to be used as a regular warning device like an electric siren or a Q. With it's 10 second timer it seems to me that if one were to be using it, even to complement another siren, that one would still run into the same issue of out running it. The pulses are going to be stronger the closer you get to a car, but when you figure the amount of time that it would take a driver to notice the vibrating sensation from it and then the 1.5 seconds it takes for them to react to the approaching apparatus, you'd almost practiacally already be on top of the car and you're just experiencing the same issue as if you didn't have it at all. It does seem that it would be a good product to have when you're at a major intersection with multiple lanes in either direction where the apparatus is slowing down to 10-15 MPH and where it would have more of an impact with the increased time that the other drivers would have to notice it and even if another driver's view is blocked by another vehicle it would give them more of a warning that something is up and get them looking.
  6. My decision to join my company was simple...it was the closest company to my school
  7. Union Fire Company No. 1 of Carlisle, PA operates a 1996 4X4 Dodge brush truck with 250 gallons of water, 10 gallons of class a foam, a 200' booster reel and 1,000' of forestry line. It also has a 12,000 lb. winch and all of the various tools found on a brush truck.
  8. Name of my fire company (Union) and the pride of our fleet (Engine 241)
  9. We have a 2000 Mack CL/4-Guys tanker and we love it. Its the second 4 Guys tanker we've had. It's a small company in a very small PA town and they are very professional with better service than any other apparatus manufacturer I've dealt with. During a maintence check a few months ago we found some small issues with the body that given time would have turned into major issues and 4-Guys was able to have the problems fixed within 2 weeks of us finding them. They have amazing customer service and do amazing work. Every department that I know who has a 4-Guys absolutley loves their rigs and I have never heard any complaint about any of their rigs or quality of work. According to our replacement schedule its due to be replaced in about 4 years and I'd be surprised if we went for anything other than a 4-Guys.
  10. This is a fundraiser that my department in South Central PA also uses. During the summer months we take requests for water, and when drivers are available for our tanker we'll go out and fill people's pools for $75 a load (our tanker hauls 2,500 gallons). Due to the fact that we run a somewhat low number of tanker calls a year (last year it was a little over a tenth of our 1,003 calls were for the tanker) we keep the tanker in service. As a policy we do not haul water outside of our second due area so if need be we can still have the tanker close enough to run calls with it if need be. It doesn't bring us in a huge amount of money, but every bit helps and as an added incentive, at the end of the summer one of our chiefs throws a thank you party to everybody who helped with the pool filling. Yes, filling pools is a fundraiser, but it is also a great way to get some good PR for not just for my company, but for the area fire service as a whole.
  11. Anybody know anything about the warning lights on E-3? They're not the Code 3 lights that FDNY used on the rigs before they went to LEDs. I've seen a few SOC units with these kinds of lights but never any of the Engines or Trucks.
