  1. I too have heard that WPFD is organizing a new rescue unit.... rational seems to be due in large part to the increase in new development withing the city. I will see what I can find out about the new truck and report back.
  2. I suppose the way I view it is like this, old faithful gave her all for the community for many, many years.... obviously you kept her a good reason, old rigs with no sentimental value aren't keep around, so obviosly this truck means something to your department..... the point that I am trying to make is this, that if the department has the interest, and the warewithall to do a complete restoration, it should be done...... talk some with the crew from Bedford Hills FD, they just had their '28 Buffulo pumper restored (completely), I'll ask some of the guys at my house about it as well.... we have a '28 ALF that was completely rebuilt about 15 years ago..... and see what kind of advise they can give, I'll pass it along...... but seriously, nothing looks sharper than a beautifully maintained antique fire engine (in my opinion: )
  3. I think the Pelham FIre House is a neat old historic fire station..... the nicest though, that is a tough question..... I'm kind of biased towards Katonah.... Banksvilles new Fire House is Gorgeous!!!!! I have the feeling Armonks new digs will be the same way. Oh, DP. Hayes in Pleasantville is another reallly neat old firehouse with the tudor style architecture.
  4. The old first due engine was an old W.L.F. Quad.... 1950's era, I don't know the number.
  5. Buchanan, Irvington, and Rye Brook were also recipeants of Fire Act Grants this year..... sorry, I don't have the figures on how much they recieved.....
  6. Actually, there are quite a few fire departments in Westchester who recieved grants this year! Congratulations to all of them.... I'll see if I can't get all the departments who are getting these grants and list them later today.
  7. Yes very good work on the part of the Hills! I'm proud of you boys!
  8. Mohegans Rescue, I don't know the # but I think it was a 1939 Diamond T Rescue they got from Croton FD...... and what about the 1920's LaFrance pumper (type 75)? What number was that assigned to?
  9. I agree that it is optimal to have a facility that is conducive to holding the equipment that your department needs..... further noting that in the perfect world we would not have to design our fire apparatus around older and some times antiquated stations...... but sadly as public servents one of the many issues we must be constantly aware of is the cost to the public. Additions renovations, and new facilities are not always fiscally feasable, especially today when it seems like every municipality is feeling the crunch of the ecconomy..... so sometimes it is the only option to build custom trucks around the fire house your great grandfather run out of when he was your age..... I guess in short, Bigger newer facilites are the more desirable of the two choices.
  10. Several years ago I had heard that the Mount Pleasant fire companies, P'ville, H'thone, Thorn, and Valhalla, were considering the establishment of a mid county tech-rescue team..... does anyone know if this has happened. I think that a regional tech-rescue team would be a tremendous asset to the county..... each department could bring a special expertice to the team.... high angle, confined space, etc. I'd love to see some No. West. county departments consider the idea as well. As for Haz-mat, in K-town we have the basics, anything larger, we need to call Haz-Mat 1.
  11. For several years Pelham Fire Department ran an old Mack CF pumper that they got second hand from FDNY, also, New Rochelle ran a spare Seagrave 100ft. RMA, that they too purchased used from FDNY.... but off hand, I do not know of any ESU recycles other than the MVPD. Frankly, for some fire departments/emergency services this is a very effective means of obtaining needed equipment at an affordable price..... If used pumper and aerials can be refurbed to suit a purpose with a new department, why couldn't the same be done with an old rescue? The only concern is the reliability of the rig? Will it be more of a financial burden for a department to keep a rig running than it will be to purchase something new? I'm just curious though, what is Yorktown DPW going to run a ESU vehicle on, EMS, FIRE daytime response? Or is it for watermain breaks and trees down/roads closed.....either way it sounds very interesting!
  12. Snorkle 1 1970 FWD/Young/Pitman Snorkle 85ft. Replaced a 1939 WLF Quad...... first mutual aid..... King Lumber in Goldens Bridge or South Salem Pres. Church.... ???
  13. I Like Tower Ladder 57 too, a beautiful truck. I'm also kind of partial to P.C.F.D Tower Ladder 2, "Goin' to Hell in a Bucket" and the Greatful Dead Symbols on the Sign really make the truck, it has a real sharp Red and Black paint scheme... nice truck. Tie?
  14. Nice work Rescue 20 on the Mack from Somers..... but I think (I could be wrong) that Millwod has you beat on the second one...... 1957 Mack B was engine 246? Either way, nice darts!
  15. Ok..... here is my Trivia Question for you all. Which fire department in Westchester County had the first tanker, and who made the truck.....?
  16. By the way.... both of the ladder trucks from Hartsdale FD, were former FD White Plains.... or so I have been told.
  17. I believe that Millwood Fire Department had Jeep 1. I think it had bodywork by Howe..... a front mounted pump and a ladder rack. I have a picture of it..... b/W. But I don't know when it was built, or when it served until. If anyone has anymore info on this rig I'd love to hear about it.
  18. Ok, here goes..... Command (3) 2003 GMC Suburban 3500Srs. W./Red Engine 240 (Purchase) 2003 Seagrave Pumper Red/W. Engine 78 (Tarrytown) 1980 Hahn Pumper Red/W. Engine 108 (Bedford) 2000 Mack Gowans Knight Source Pumper Red/W. (TANKER) Engine 188 (Somers) 1989 Pierce Lance Tanker Pumper (of course this truck will need to be refitted to carry a portable pond and have side shutes for dumping water.) Ladder 19 (VMFD) 1999 Seagrave 100 ft. RMA Red/W. Utility 2003 Ford/Knappheid 4dr. Cab Utility body Red/W. Rescue: (Evesham NJ) 2000 Seagrave/Marion non-walk thru heavy rescue Red/W. Mini Attack 13: (Somers) 1966 International 4WD Brush Truck Red Antique: 1949 Ahrens Fox Piston Pumper Red Sorry guys I don't want a boat so I gave myself a brush truck instead....
  19. What about a tanker..... I'm a rural kind of guy.....can I add a tanker???
  20. Oops! Forgot Briarcliff Manor had a Mack C pumper too.
  21. Speaking of Mack C fire trucks in Westchester.... lets have a moment of silence for the demise of the last in service Mack C in Westchester. A sad moment. FORMER Mack C fire Engines that served in Westchester. Verplank, Croton, Montrose, Buchanan, Goldens Bridge, Thornwood, Port Chester, North Tarrytown, and North White Plains each had Mack C pumpers. Chappaqua had a Mack C pumper and a quad, both from 1960 I believe. Larchmont had two Mack C pumpers, a 1958, and a 1969. Croton had a Mack C rescue truck, I think it was a 1963. I know New Rochelle had an open cab pumper, and I know Mount Vernon had a 1966 pumper, and Yonkers had at least one Mack C pumper. Am I missing any? Does anyone have any info on the where abouts of these trucks today? Too bad they are now all gone.... such a shame, they were so beautiful.
  22. There is absolutely nothing in the world that let's people know you are coming better than a Federal Q2B! It is the greatest sound in the world, like music to my ears, and it always gets people out of the way! I'll take a Federal over any other siren any day of the week!!!!!!!!
  23. Hey Larchmont, heard the sad news that your Mack C is finally out of service.... I think that marks the end of an era in Westchester, sad really. What are you guys going to replace it with? As for Katonah, I think we are working on a new tanker, but no details to share yet.... I'll keep you all posted.
  24. Thank you JJL429! I agreee the Seagrave is a superior builder of fire apparatus! And I agree that Rick and Carl and Seagrave would take care of any issues. I think that FDNY is a good example, because regardless of low bids...... those trucks in the city still take over a decade of severe beating and keep on woking!!!! I still would like to hear of other Seagrave experiances... Thanx, and stay safe!
  25. In Katonah, we have a walk through body..... there are good points and bad points to this design in my mind..... the walk in body is nice because we can move a ton of people.....additionally we can use it for rehab, it is warm in the winter and coool in the summer. We can opperate as a command center for inside the box with a phone, multiple radios and a work area for staging, also we have a telemetry unit for our thermal imagining camera which is mounted in the box as well. I do think however, that you loose a lot of valuable storage space with a walk-in box... but I suppose that a lot of this is personal preference. As far as equiptment, saws and cutting tools, Lukas, Hurst or whatever you use, a complete set. Airbags.... high and low pressure reels, air chissle, high lifr jacks....ample cribbing.....cascade system, light tower, ropes and rigging gear, hazmat response equipment, hand tools of all assortments, gas detector...... the rig should be very well stocked.
