  2. never gonna happen. These chiefs are so power hungry they will never give up their little sandbox.

The guys in the city have full trucks and they still get more guys then they need. And that's a good thing. Here in Westchester everyone is so scared of this big scary Consolidation. Just get it done. We are all getting kicked around by a couple of dinosaur Chiefs who are still using the mind set of the 70's 80's and 90's. Times have changed. Taxpayers expect and deserve more and better fire protection. Showing up with one guy on the rig or sending a couple of guys is not gonna cut it anymore. As was stated, everywhere else in the country departments cover 100's of square miles with less then we have. You cant rely on Vols like you use too. You cant expect a fully staffed engine or ladder to come anymore. Times have changed. Now it's time this county to catch up.

It was the Westchester Career Chiefs that endorsed the consolidation study, and you can bet your last d0llar that it wont be the "Power Hungry Chiefs " that finalize a consolidation. It WILL be your city councils, mayors, town councils ,board of fire commissioners, taxpayers and any other politician that has 2 minutes to spare that will decide where consolidation lands.

    Bnechis and helicopper like this

  3. Stepping on units is never a good thing , once units have arrived on scene we go to our fireground channels (2 or 3 ) and the Chiefs Aid remains on 1( primary dispatch). This enables incoming units to communicate w/ the fireground via the Chiefs Aid while the IC communicates and monitors units on scene channel 2 or 3(interior). It works well when units follow SOPs and gives priority to on scene units directly to the IC w./o interference.

  4. With the cold weather here what do you and your Department do that changes your method of operations ? Ie (H20 cans moved to interior compartments, draining main drain on pumps, lines open (cracked ) to eliminate freezing etc...)

What tips do you have for keeping warm while operating (*leaving 1 corner of a room burning is not an option!)

  5. You must have ESP eng158., I was just going to post the same reply. Your absolutely right, I too could care less if you could drive the apparatus thru the eye of a needle, more importantly is, due you know how to operate it properly so it can perform its main function once you arrive! The only thing you left out of your post though was does the chauffer even know where he's going? I've seen guys on my job with a CDL  and 20yrs. of experience run around like a chicken with their friggin head cut off, not knowing an address, which is literally 5 blocks away. Everything's O.K. though, because they have their CDL and can back into qrts. blindfolded doing 50mph. Yeah, O.K.! dry.gif

Im certain that u as an OFFICER corrected that Firefighter with hours of training, or at the very least spoke with him about his/her performance or lack of

  6. Again guys u have to take each Department and its resources into account. If its a career dept then there should be an interior Chief only when the other positions (Saferty,Communications etc ..) have been fulfilled, and even then let the interior officers do there job. As for Volly Dept. there is an obligation to all Firefighters regardless if they are on scene or responding in that a Qualified IC be in place at all times and that everyone is clear on how and when it is implimented. Dont set yourself up to fail before u get out the door!

So the what ifs that Rescue 6 mentioned should always be dicussed ,it will make u and your Dept better for it! In the real world.

  7. When forcing a door to a fire apt. and the door opens towards u the control man (closest to the door) should use his foot closest to the door as a pivot . When u "pop" the door and keep that foot in position it will keep the door from flying open and u winding up in the %*&$. CONTROL THE DOOR!

    - With multiple locks pop the top locks first (if possible) this way your not working w/ as much blowing out on u. This is not always poosible but w/ it is u should have better working conditions for the lower locks.

  8. Lately Ive talked w/ several Firefighters /Officers and there seems to be a some complacency when dealing w/ CO. There was a recent "PUff back" in a private dwelling and a CO reading was never taken, several hours later a young occupant was being treated in the ER for possible poisioning.I know the Officer and crew to be heads up guys,so point being dont forget the basics!

Things to consider: -Does your monitor read %or LEL ? Readig the display doesnt help if u dont know what your lookig at!

-Always have your Scott! u cant help w/your a victim!

-What are the acceptable levels before you take action ie EMS,evacuate, vent

-Be aware of EMS calls especially this time of year!Is it the Flu or CO?

    - If there is a reading you must locate the cause if u need help call! Con Ed is always available.

    - If vented by occupants have them stand fast and locate the thermostat ,activate thiere furnace/gas app. then take another reading

    - Eliminate outside sources- I went to a M/D and found the source to be a temporary boiler paked alongside the building w/ its exhaust at the 3 floor window. Be safe !!! Know your job !
