Keeping real simple, we all do what we do for two reasons, to help others and to go home at the end of our tours. Bottom line thats exactly what the troopers did. They helped out their brother and sisters in emergency service and the public they all serve and helped everyone including themselves get home safely. Let those who would not want the same done for them cast the first stone....

Wrong. You pay taxes for State Troopers to protect lives and property. The old "my taxes pay your salary" argument is bull and you know it. You don't get to tell them what they do on a daily basis.
Its funny, everyone criticizes NYSP for not cooperating at accident scenes (and I don't agree with their policies on that issue) but when these particular Troopers cooperate as requested by the senior officer on a fire scene they're still wrong...

By that token, as an EMT I can never have anyone else other than my crew hold stabilization, put pressure on a wound or grab a backboard for a lift assist on a heavy patient....sometimes it just doesn't work that way. Sure, address any overarching, systemic issues but in the mean time there's a job to be done...

No matter what anyone says, the IC made a COMMAND DECISION, and utilized whatever resources he had available at the time. What would be the difference between setting up a master stream and leaving it flowing unattended, versus putting those fine gentlemen in charge of a hoseline (aside from the fact that a master stream shouldn't be left unattended)?
I applaud the IC recognizing that help was needed and seeking the assistance, and even more, thumbs up to the Purple Ties for rising to the task. They very easily could have said "not my job" and gone and secured a perimeter/the scene (not a knock on LEO's).
I have been on many scenes that the PD assisted with fire operations, none were ever freelancing, and everyone forgets....
WE ARE ALL OUT THERE FOR ONE PURPOSE!!! TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE PUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So long as that gets done, in a controlled manner, and everyone goes home safe, everyone should take a chill pill, and re-focus and worry about the problems they/their own department has, before throwing out s*** about what others do.

Did the troopers do the right thing? Sure.
Does the fire department need to make changes to ensure adequate staffing to avoid having to use civilians, state troopers, DPW workers, chefs, landscapers, soccer moms, etc. to man handlines? You betcha.

I agree, the main point of the article was not to higlight the "whining firefighters" but to propose a solution to solve the problem. I don't care who you are, there's nothing good about false alarms. From the responses, it woud appear that no one here is thinking big picture and that folks just want to knee jerk and call names. Try thinking about big the big picture. Responding is dangerous, no one wants to get hurt only to find out the call was bogus and from a place you keep going back to. It takes resources to respond, whether no matter what type of dept....people mentioned tough times, guess what that includes municipal services. No one is saying don't respond but an unecessary response can be avoided, everyone wins. As for the manpower issue, perhaps morale is a bad word to use, but the issue is real. How many false calls can someone go on before they really upset their boss? How many times can the same address pop up before anyone gets burned out? I don't think the article mentioned punishing those have a false alarm, but those who are continually having false alarm and have been educated on how to alleviate the problem. I really love some of the negative replies to this topic directed at the FD. It really makes me wonder if any of you guys telling the brothers in Nyack to "man up and shut up" even read the article in its entirety, or processed what the point of it actually was.
Yet, the first time someone gets in a wreck with a POV or apparatus going to a totally preventable false alarm at the same location for the 5th time that week, it'll be the same guys pointing the finger blaming the "yahoos", right?
There is a huge difference between responding to an alarm system properly doing its job, regardless of the outcome, and responding to the same location over and over again because there is a default with the system or a situation that can be corrected to prevent outright false alarms. The former is not what they are complaining about, it's the latter.

So your fine with your dept going to the same restaurant for the 4th time in the month and the rig "maybe" getting into an accident and "maybe" a civillian or MOS getting injured or worse as a result? Your fine with a store owner who has been told over and over to have his alarm company send someone out so they can move the smoke head away from the new oven they just put in that keeps setting the alarm off? We are talking about cronic probelms from the same location due to the same problems over and over.

So I've heard several times today and even seen some articles online that report that Gov. Christie is planning on ordering flags to half for Whitney Houston. There are so many ways to honor someone, but to orders all flags in the state to half?? I'd like to point out that tihs is the same honor that is given to heads of state but more importantly those we have lost in the service to our country...a good voice yes but definitely not worth of the same statewide symbol of honor and respect. Technically, only the President or govenrnor can order flags to half, that should give some indication of that serious, solemn nature the act represents. If these articles are true, shame on Gov. Christie! P.S. for those who may point out that it was perhaps done for other celebs in the past, it was inappropriate then and it's innapropriate now; two wrongs don't make a right.

Governor Christie's Facebook page has blown with tons of comments against him and many people have called his office. I have left my own sentiments on his fb page and plan to call his office tomorrow when I'm not working... If you want to call too his office number is 609-292-6000... Let him know this will not be tolerated
