  1. The last place it should be on is a command vehicle. If you are a department that may have multiple first due engines dependent on the response area it would make more sence to have it on one vehicle that responds to all alarms such as a truck or rescue. Being on the rescue, it would be there for MVA's if it were needed. Remember, there are more uses for TIC then just fires.
  2. Assumed - no pre drill briefing on the planned evolutions. no established water source (goes along with the lack of handlines).
  3. One fire that wasn't mentioned (I don't remember all the details) was on 5 Westlake Drive in Thornwood (off Nannyhagen Rd) in the 80's. If I remember correctly, a swedish nanny was accused, if not conviced of arson that led to fatality of an infant. Another one not mentioned was the Stouffer's Hotel fire in White Plains/Harrison area in the 1980. A quick google brought up this:
  4. While I agree with what you say JBE, I would like to make one comment where only being familiar with the area and not truly knowing it can be a problem. If there was a job dispatched like this (just down from the Lincolndale Firehouse). It could be in two different areas of town as there is a discrepency. The Lincolndale Firehouse in located on State Route 139 down the road from Route 202. The cross streets given (202 and 100) are several hundred feet away from the Somers Firehouse. Going one better, I've responded to one call that was reported to be Route 202 "down the road" from Route 100. The call ended up on 202, by Route 118 several miles away! I have responded to plenty of alarms where both the street names given were right and not the landmark and where the landmark was right but not the street names. An alarm such as this may warrent an invesigation to both areas. Landmarks should be kept current. Realistically, that hasn't been the Elephant Hotel in quite some time. Someone new to the area may only know that as the Somers Town House. A better example would be Route 202 in the area of the old Ponderosa. If I heard that I would know exactly where it is along with numerous other "old timers". Currently it is Somers Chase. All the newbies would (with in the last 5 to 10 years) may only know it as that. Landmarks aren't the be all, end all. They can help, but can also add to confustion.
  5. You can't assume what other drivers should see. I try to make eye contact with other drivers whenever possible, that way I know they have an idea of my intentions. Even if there was no accident, to approach an intersection at this speed is grounds for reckless endangerment. Getting around a wall "as best as they can" doesn't cut it. If you have to sit in traffic and wait, so be it. I'd rather run the risk of a prolonged response. In this case he never made it to the call. Who are you helping then? Regardless of the fatality, anytime an emergency vehicle is involved in an accident, it's out of service. If there were no injuries, but property damage as a result of a response, what do you do, continue on your response? I would hope the answer is a big NO. If you did, then your wrong by leaving the scene of an accident. In tying into the 10-20 response thread, this is why it's important to shut the lights down when there is no "emergency". This solves alot of guess work from other drivers on your intentions.
  6. Very sad and preventable. As far as the practice of using air bags for raising the vehicle? Never heard of it myself. Regardless of what method is used, the vehicle must be stabalized to prevent rolling. There's additional info www.firehouse.com:
  7. 46.260 is currently streamed on www.scanct.com, feed 4.
  8. Merry Christmas too all!! Yes, to you atheists and agnostics too. If you want to complain about it, go right ahead. I hope Santa was good to you all. He got me a new Code 3. Stay safe through the rest of the holidays and don't eat too much.
  9. What's 01/06?

  11. It varies with each department. Some will allow outsiders who live within three miles outside the district lines, others will allow employment within the district. One question that you may be asked, even though you work in Mt. Kisco, would you be allowed to respond to alarms while working?
  12. From Sunday's Poughkeepsie Journal:
  13. I can't speak as to whether or not Columbian Hose got hit or not as I wasn't there BUT Eng Co 181 was not assigned to cover. They responded to a hydrant that happened to be IFO Columbian Hose to establish a fill site for the tanker shuttle. With all of the previous "take overs", Somers was detailed to cover.
  14. One big reason was price. KME was $30,000 to $40,000 (don't remember the exact #'s) cheaper than Seagrave and Pierce. Other reasons (not directly related to price) were quality issues with Seagreave. Issues that, almost 5 years later, still are not corrected. Issues with valves being installed wrong, incorrect wiring and paint pealing.
  15. Features: pump 1500 gpm two stage Waterous pump, 1000 gal booster tank, on board generator (hydraulic) To follow: Bullard T3Max TIC, (5) fireground Handi-Talkies, assorted engine co tools. As of Sunday, Dec 5 @ 1500 hrs, no elephant, no lettering, just some gold leaf around edges.
  16. 2004's schedule was posting in March, 2004. I guess that would be soon. March is only 3 1/2 months away.
  17. Hydrants within the Town of New Castle(Millwood, Chapaqua) are.
  18. To my knowledge there is no such public list. If there were, it would have to include every fire department in the US.
  19. There are three factors that determines your ISO rating. 40% of your overall rating is determined by water supply (hydrants, other availible water sources). 50% on the fire department (training, equiptment, geographic response, etc) 10% on dispatching (telephone systems, alerting, dispatch staffing, comunications). More info on the Insurance Services Orginization can be found on the web site: www.isomitigation.com. Look under the PPC link. Additional information can be found on the late Larry Stephens website www.isoslayer.com. On the website is his book on the subject in word format. Larry in some circles was known as the ISO guru. He was not afraid to speak his peace on the subject, but was often scrutinized about his opinions. One of Larry's greatest achievements was assisting the Fallon/Churchill, Nevada fire department get a Level 1 rating. They were the first all volunteer fire department to achieve this rating.
  20. As with anything, training is the key. As for as the $43 bucks, you could likely by the pieces separately for less money and it will do the same job. Just another example of someone making a buck. The one that gets me is those who spends anywhere from 7 to 10 bucks for a "wack pack". The wack pack includes 2 door chocks, a "heavy duty" rubber strap and a Garrity flashlight. You can get the same exact thing for $2.00 by buying the light at Wal-mart ($2.00). Going to your local tire store for a scrap inner tube (free) and go to a local construction site for a scrap 2x4 (free).

  22. To my knowledge, we've never had complaints about Santa. We have had complaints about using lights and sirens for non-emergency purposes when driving Santa around. Make sure you on Medic 2 when you do that.
  23. That's even more the reason to do it! The hell with these left wing liberal commies. (Should I say what I really think of them?) This year there's a school in NJ that's not letting the "holiday" chorus sing Christmas or Hanakkah songs. ](*,) What's next? Remove the holidays from the calander? Sue Hallmark for selling Christmas cards? Sue Webster for having words with religious meaning in the dictionary? Hell, why not? There already taking the pledge of this great nation out of schools. Let's just do away with the Declaration of Independence because of it too and change this nation's history(I know it's been tried)! Rant off
  24. Judging from the pictures, it doesn't look like much more than a couple of straps or webbing and some 'beaners. Is this something that someone slapped together and marketed it just for fire use? If so, the cost is probably significantly higher than buying all the pieces separately.
