  2. we are in a dangerous business === be carefull out there, accidents can happen any time any where. I wish him a speedy recovery
  3. I might be persuaded in the argument that points might be added if there is firefighter one and/or firefighter 2 national certification, but just because you belong to a volunteer department?? what happens to the poor guy/girl that lives in yonkers/mt vernon/ new rochelle/white plains. Points for serving our country yes in deed!!!
  4. you can call them sop's--you can call them sog's- you can call them just about anything-- just have them and use them and review them. update them. you should include things like 1910.134, 1910.156, 1910.120, if you dont know what those things are you better find out. also look at NFPA standards. allof that might help you.
  5. Heres more scoop---Eastchester has applied for a agility test for sometime on march most likely March 18 so no St Pat celebration for someof you guys, Class is scheduled to begin april 3 No one from White Plains is in the class. Pleasent Valley well what can I say theres one in every academy. nothing on any Yonkers class.!
  6. Career Fire Chiefs Fire Academy 03-2006 will start April 03 2006, with graduation scheduled for June 30 2006. There are apx 25-29 Probies none from Yonkers in the class. As of FEb 17,2006 Academy Director
  7. hold on there jared1979-- firefighters do get burned-- it happens some times is from being careless as e92l44 stated somtimes it just happens. That chiefs comments concerned training and being burned and the chief attatude. Lets not complicate things--sometimes s*** just happens.
  8. I think he got burned in the head- and it effected his judgement. Be safe all the time --- pretty simple isnt it. the job is hard enough when its for real. Drills shoud bea realistic as possible but safe.
  9. Billy was a good friend, excellent union leader, outstanding firefighter, wonderfull father and husband. The lights in Greenburgh are dim tonight with his passing- The fire service lost a shining star, I lost a friend. No matter where you went with Billy the room was always lite up with his smile and his wit. He had a infectious laff that just made you smile. The best thing I can say about Billy --- I wish there were more people like him in this world. He truly made the world a better place. May his family find peace in the knowledge that we are all sadden by his passing and share in their grief. Walter Ferguson Greenburgh Unniformed Firefighter Retired member
  10. That fire chief - no wait he's not a a chief-- a chief is a leader of men and that chief doesn't qualify, that man should not only turn in his badge-- the police should be looking for him--delibertly saying his men are better off when they get burned--- where is this guys brains!!!! There should be a some kind of revolt in that department. Heres the Drill of the month men-- lets see how burned we can get before we quit. just my thoughts I might be wrong but gee wizz guys who out ther can condone burning their men to see how hot the fire is.
  11. Capt 36 is right on the money Dalwood shopping center. arson-- I was part of the investigiation team that worked with Fire marshal Butler, from the D.A.Office and Dan Berry From the Town of Greenburgh and Chief Schoonmaker from Hartsdale F.D.. when I say part of the investigiation team I mean it in a very loose way--- Joe and Dand would say" hey kid dig over here" " look at this" "hey kid dig over here- uncover this pile of lets see whats under it." when they were through thay also said " hey kid come over here and learn" they were some of the best investigatior around. Joe will be remembered this friday Feb 10 at the Training center with a special plaque dedicated to him memory.
  12. good subjects--being i have been around a long time-- started in fire service 1966-- i can rememebr a few. Geneal moters fire 1969 propane fire General motors fire again around 1971 Paint shop. orchard street Tarrytown jan 1968 lost most of the block and a house on the street above just a few my memory is fading after all these years!!! just kidding
  13. Well let me in on this issue-- Training is the most important thing you can do in the fire service. You dont have fires every day-- so you have to be prepared for the one thats out there. Jones- if you are as frustrated as you sound--the laws are on your side. osha 1910.156 fire bragades standards. 1910.120. haz mat 1910.156 all apply to the fire service. Do the Fire Official in the village , town, or fire district - know whats going on?? or are they blinded by the red lights and sirens. Are things the same as they have been for 100 years? Do they have the " they are doing the best they can" "theyare only voilunteers" mentality Thiose days are long over-- hang in there -keep taking classes rise above those that jest at you. you wil be a better firefighter and a better person for doing so
  14. OK OK I wasent in the 4 th grade or the 6th grade but still rememebr it. There are a lot of times that stick out in a persons memory. this horrible incident is certinly one of them. It will be a lasting memory in our lives, and the world is a safer place because these men and women gave their lives for us. I know ALS you want to know where I was right?? Working days in the fire station I was in my 14th year!!! I remember where I was when JFK was shot, Martin Luther King, RFK, John Lennon. When Neil Armstrong steped on the moon.
  15. If there is equipment that is of no use to any department, I'm sure there are departments in third world countries that would just love to have it donated,or for that matter fire departmens in rural america that need up- dated fire supplies. dont let things go to waste.
  16. all departments have been canvased, the career chiefs have met, so unless departments that want to hire get a move on, they will miss the class, Probie class starts in Montour Falls Feb 27th Westchester class start date is likly to be april 03.
  17. "All goood things come to thoses that wait" Be patient, be carefull, be prepared for the best job in the world.
  18. OK OK heres the latest scoop Probie class is starting--it may start as late as april 3 rd and last till the end of june. 20 in the class as of today 5 newburgh 3 Garden City 8 Mount vernon 2 VA 1 Scarsdale 1 Fairview ( Westchester)
  19. Looks like you found your calling hudson--- See you at the acdamey
  20. Hudson your problem is simple---- move!!!!you know im kidding--the views along the hudson are wonderfull--It's the price we have to pay for such joyous living. Mabey we should give them lights and sirens!!! think that might speed them up??
  21. I knew if I waited long enough ALS would show up here-- and hes worth the wait. how about trying this-- Intense firetraing for Volunteers---4 week summer course to include ff1-ff2- rtb- safety survival. in sence a fire academy for the volunter service. Is it feasable--- I dont know is it worth looking into??you be the judge. Never say your training let you down!!!!!! Andy you gotta get out more
  22. glad to see things are picking up so to speak--- I do have to agree with 786 on this point the I.A.F.F. has been the leader for firefighters for a long time. chief Mancusi is right F.A.S.N.Y. has held up the volunteer service for a long time here in New York. Lets move in the same direction TRAINING our firefighters , bringing all firefighter up to the same standards.
  23. sfd-- go back to your department --- see how much money is in the coffers--- set aside some money for training. mabey it wont be much but mabey it will be enough to cover costs of a trip to the State Fire Academy for a course that cant be conducted here in Westchester. firefighter 1 is being offered every month in Westchester in some form or another. Thats more then any other County in the state so it's hard to blame the County on that one. The County is also moving foward to improve the training center-- so look for improvments soon.
  24. ALS therein lies the problem--- departments are afraid of change.( if it was ok then its ok now) It worked this way for 100 yrs why change??Its the attitude of most departments that have to change. Yes I aggree that there are a lot of Depatments making headway---thats good to see. lets all move a head to a new and better fire serevice
  25. Hudson--Having met Firefighter Cool you know how I feel. His voice shoud be loud and clear to all firefirefighters not only here but across the country. The mesage is simple--protect yourself---know what to do in a emergency-- Know your S.C.B.A.--have a rope and know how to use it- the life you save just might be yours. TRAINING TRAINING TRAINING In my opinion Jeff shoud be on the lecture circuit passing this strong message to all firefighters. I'd love to have him back as part of the probie class .
