  1. Believe it or not we drove tracked vehicles over range fires on rifle / machine gun ranges all the time. These look like they would do the job then some.
  2. I second that George. Keep your head up Jody!
  3. Ron Bucca was also in the US Army Special Forces (Green Beret). He was a member of 1st Battalion 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne), until he was injured on the job. He then moved to Army Civil Affairs to continue serving the nation. He was very knowledgeable regarding radical Islam. Rest in peace.

  5. Jimmy - Last alarm, mission complete. See you on the other side.
  6. A question I have not seen asked. After a working job that extended through the night for 8-12 hours, is the volunteer firefighter covered under this law not to report to work at all? One for safety reasons if the volunteer operates machinery or vehicles, and two for rest and recovery to be prepared to do it again if needed.

  8. Sounds like a bag of worms to me!
  9. Res1cue LT We tested it with 7.5 mm and 8 mm Aramid/Nylon Sterling Rope W/Crosby hook attached. The CMC EA just did not work well at all. How is Capt Dunn?
  10. Bob, We use the Petzl EXO. We tested the CMC Escape Artist 540 Belay, it jammed up several times doing about 200 slides. It also does not play out very smooth when hooking up to an anchor that's distant from the window. Hands down the EA did not work as well as the EXO. I see that Chief Flynn said they have a new CMC EA, if it has a post running through the center of the 540 belay cylinder then, I suspect that's causing the problem, if not I would like to see how it works. Stop over and see us next door, we can show you what we tested and how they worked out.
  11. Will hudson 144 be able to climb up into the cab?
  12. Is the fireground channel the same as the dispatch channel ?
  13. "Quote by alsfirefighter" I'm not sure why you would think that anything you put would perceived as complaining, but hey to each their own. "Quote by alsfirefighter" Complaining about it on a public forum and assuming (which know him I know he will) Jeff is going to get info from Dutchess 911 or whoever is great, but 1 person isn't going to help solve the issue. "Just stating facts, not complaining" The Chiefs of the north east corner are asking as a group, they continue to pursue the issue, advocating for their Firefighters.
  14. I have asked him to get me a copy, don't know about posting it here but I will try to get you a hard copy. This evening I ran into another chief officer from the north east corner and asked him what he knew about the county FASTeam requirement, he verbatim stated the 10 members needed to be FAST trained and equipped.
  15. Don't think it will happen, half of these dispatchers are dispatcher linemen. The other half LOD firefighters. This hole EMS change comes from the deputy fire commissioner. He and others think more runs = no layoffs. Look at New Rochelle, city growing, more high rises, more runs and they still have to fight off job cuts so it seems every few years.
  16. alsfirefighter, Great post, lets make sure you have all the facts. First a chief officer from the north east corner of Dutchess showed me the DC911 center guidance/SOP on fast teams during the period of 2008-2009. It said you have to have ten trained members before you would be put on the list as having a FASTeam in Dutchess. That's your answer for "needing FAST training that badly", the county gave the impression with said SOP that State OFPC training was required. DC Pells stated something to the effect that the county would put you on the FAST list when the chief of your department request it. Unless this changed, in 2008 the DC911 guidance/SOP said you had to receive the State OFPC training, whether it was a CFI or SFI I don't recall. Your comment on getting the coordinator to speak to OFPC about getting classes by a SFI is a great suggestion, you do need to know that's exactly what was done by chiefs in the north east corner of dutchess. The answer to the request was "we got what we have" for classes, so why this might seem like complaining to you, it just setting the record straight.
  17. DC Pells, Knowledge, Skills and Experience must count for something chief. Lets say that the intent here was good and Unionvale just wanted to train some up and coming firefighters, don't you think that sending Firefighters this young to FAST training while other Departments in the county needed FAST training just to establish their FAST team and had to wait merits asking what the heck!!! In the military we end up with very young Soldiers, we spend most of our time training the "new guy" on the art of the job. We don't put him on point still wet behind the ears. We put the skilled warrior out front on point with the experience and knowledge to get the job done safely. Through coaching, mentoring and teaching you build probie skills to prepare them for the job. No disrespect intended to those motivated 16 year old firefighters, but to be a trained FAST team member requires more then a state course to to make one, the course only adds some more tools (skills) to the tool box.
  18. DC Pells, I was told by the Millerton Chief that they were turned down for FAST school seats at Montour Falls through Dutchess County and that yes there were Explorers in the class from Unionvale. They protested but it fell on deaf ears. I guess strange things did happen!! DC Pells, I guess if needed part "needs to happen". It sucks when those that seek knowledge through training get screwed over, it damages morale.
  19. I think that a firefighter was still on the small roof in the rear when the ladder was pulled to be used for the bailout. This left him high and dry, the FAST team should have a ladder ready (this means close to the front of the building for fast team use only with their fast stokes & equipment). It does not appear that they have a petzl/RIT type bailout system. This could have made a huge difference in the sequence of events!!!
  20. Its Engine 5, it old but works. You hit the brakes and it stops, it pumps water and that's what we need. The brothers at FDMV would love to have a nice new engine, its not in our future. This just happens to be the third working fire in MV in the past 3 days.
  21. I've had many people ask me how my crew knew what to do given a choice had to be made. The simple answer is as I size up with my crew inbound, I use hand and arm signals for my crew. I have a few basic signals for what size ladder is needed, to move faster because someone is hanging from the window ledge or to stay in place and await further orders. And even yes the broken arrow signal (when the stuff hits the fan). This leaves the radio free for the IC to issue orders. It takes the edge off the din of battle. Let me make it clear, if I see something all need to know I transmit it for everyones safety.
  22. Barry, Why will this only take place in the three smaller villages, tax base? won't NR,MV get hit hard with state cuts?
  23. Barry, Is the county looking at last years study? Do you think any of 10 Department plan will be used in the near future (3-5 years)?
  24. The largest percentage of Home Owners tax bills in NYS are school taxes. Fire/Police/EMS are a drop in the bucket. Elected officals always go after FD/EMS and PD when the budgets get tight. Look at NRFD, having to deal with cuts in the past and most recently threatened with layoffs. Some what the same in YFD, along with FDMV facing de-motions within the DCs,CAPTs and LTs. These Departments can't afford cuts to manpower in any form, plain and simple. Its schools that are breaking the backs of home owners, not emergency services. The State needs to re-look how we fund schools.
