  1. CPR training should be a requirement in High School health classes and for graduation. I might go so far as saying you should need it to be licensed to drive, but since people don't need to know HOW to drive for a license, maybe that's pushing our luck. Great story. Good job ump.
  2. Good. Maybe next they can reverse the stupid surcharge that doubles our vehicle registrations as well.
  3. Am I the only one that find this number rediculously high? Does this include EMS costs as EMS is outsourced to NDP in the district?
  4. If you want a real answer, consult an attorney. Most answers given here will likely be best guesses.
  5. I love when the media explain what drugs do. Sodium bicarbonate: Relieves heartburn and acid indigestion Also good if you want to bake a cake!
  6. Yeah, that seems to be the way this appears to be going. Just would be nice to see something from SEMO or REMAC about it. Till then, when in doubt, rule it out.
  7. Seems like the REMAC back then raised a lot of the same concerns that are still present today. Question is, has anything been done in regards to in since 2007, and if not, why not? Time to do some research. (And yeah, I agree, while it can be in strict speaking considered an impaled object, the removal is straight forward and easy. I guess by REMAC's thoughts, if we have a patient with a splinter we can't remove that either. I guess we shouldn't be taking out our credit cards for beestings with the stinger/sac still present too. )
  8. My problem is it doesn't come down to treating the patient. In a lot of places it comes down to treating the way you think your QA/QI guy would require it so that they don't make a stink and try to jam you up. Currently there is no STANDARD for how Tazered patients are treated. I hear everything from "they aren't a patient" (like above) to "they should be worked up because there is risk for cardiac damage" (like in the article, and some agencies not too far away do such). I honestly think a policy statement from REMAC is in order here.
  9. True. I was thinking more along the lines of those possible cardiac patients who don't have significant ECG findings. Another tool in the toolbox perhaps. Just as long as people don't lean on it to much. (Like SP02s.)
  10. Next part of the debate has been mentioned before. Should Tazer patients be sent to the hospital for evaluation, and if so, should they go ALS?
  11. http://www.healthcanal.com/blood-heart-circulation/28951-Indiana-University-cardiologist-reports-stun-guns-can-result-sudden-cardiac-arrest-and-death.html Anyone know from the case law.....how many times has a gun manufacturer been successfully sued by someone (or their kin in cases of fatalities) who was shot? I love how they mention that this guy was an expert witness AGAINST Tazer. Perhaps he's trying to drum up more business?
  12. Personally, I want a portable tester that can measure serum Troponin-I levels. Now THAT would be nice. (It's out there BTW).
  13. I still remember the Lifepak 5s. Had two halves and you connected the one side with the screen to the other with defib paddles on it via a cable. You could hook the patient up and connect it first to the portable Jonny and Roy type phone we had (I forget the name but I bet someone on here knows) and then you'd hook the "phone" (actually a UHF radio) to the monitor and it would display the ECG (only one lead at the time). Of course doing 12-Lead ECGs back then was UGLY. Props to Terri and everyone else on a job well done. The technology to transmit the ECG didn't save this guy's life. He saved his own by not denying his symptoms. Medic Hart saved him by recognizing the MI on the 12-Lead and administering the proper treatment. The ambulance crew got him there safely. The hospital staff did their thing. And the doctor did theirs. All the transmission of the ECG does is tell the staff "HEY! WAKE UP! This is the real deal and the paramedic on the phone saying they have a STEMI isn't calling to order a pizza."

  15. I recently recieved a confusing email from what appeared to be NYS and I originally thought it might be some elaborate phishing attempt or spoof email. The following went out yesterday regarding these emails which appear to be legit. ------- Headline: SLMS New System for Learning Management To: DHSES Student Subject: SLMS – New System for Learning Management From: Commissioner Jerome M. Hauer The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) and the New York State Department of State in conjunction with the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations (GOER), is pleased to announce a new system called the Statewide Learning Management System (SLMS). SLMS will be our new way of registering students for training and tracking learner history. SLMS replaces the learning management systems previously developed and maintained by individual agencies, including the Office of Emergency Management, the Office of Counter Terrorism, Office of Fire Prevention and Control and the Division of Code Enforcement and Administration (DCEA). You will be receiving an email soon from the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations which will provide instructions on how to login to SLMS. All learners should be aware that they may receive more than one email. In the process of pulling learning history information from multiple training systems, an effort was made to match users so that no records would be duplicated for learners. We were not always able to match records and, as a result, more than one account may have been created for you. It is our goal to eliminate any duplicate records created in the system. If you’ve received more than one email with the SLMS instructions and have taken training from one of the Offices listed below, please call the appropriate number so they can assist you in reconciling your learner history records. Office of Emergency Management 518-292-2351 Office of Counter Terrorism 518-292-2351 Office of Fire Prevention and Control 518-474-6746 Division of Code Enforcement and Administration 518-474-4073 In regards to fire training programs scheduled through the County Fire Coordinators office, you will receive additional communication from their office regarding the specific registration method for these courses. While overall course management will be through SLMS, some may choose to still provide a centralized course registration process. If you would like to know more about SLMS and what benefits it provides, you can view a fact sheet at http://goer.ny.gov/Training_Development/SLMS/201109_SLMSFactSheet.pdf . There is additional information, as well as learning modules, available on the GOER website at http://goer.ny.gov/Training_Development/SLMS/index.cfm

  18. I know in my town I inquired about Knox boxes and was told that there was no "system" (I'm guessing particular type?) of Knox box approved by the board (town or fire, not sure which) so they weren't in use. We sat outside a gym one night on an AFA for about a half an hour waiting for a gym member (also an FD member) to come down with an access card to get in. Entire time we could see the pulled box inside but nobody nearby. Concern was the possibility of a man down inside somewhere. (Don't ask me why the door wasn't forced). I think later on it was determined to be malicious. But situations like this and the one Barry brought up certainly highlight the need. And I love condo and HOA boards when they start nitpicking about costs/expenditures. SMH

  20. They make it sound like the heart itself touched the ground. It didn't. The thing is wrapped up multiple times for protection and sterility. It is probably well padded in there too since the average human heart is the size of a clenched fist and that packaged looked the size of a small turkey. Whatever.
  21. If you have your medic in NY and you live near that area, might look into Northern Dutchess Paramedics (NDP EMS). They do work in both NY and CT and might be willing to help you get your foot in the door in CT. The only station that does any CT work is Amenia.
  22. AMR was NEXT DOOR to the Empress base at one time. What does the proximity to Empress' base have to do with anything?
  23. Date: January 6th, 2012 Time: Ongoing Location: Wells Fargo -> Katonah Business District/Muscoot Reservoir & Farm Frequency: Bedford PD Units Operating: Bedford PD, NYSP, Westchester County PD, MTA PD Weather Conditions: Clear & unseasonably warm Description Of Incident: Bank Fraud with flight from scene Reporters: Wells Fargo Bank Writer: WAS967 Bedford PD on active investigation. From what I could ascertain two men entered the Wells Fargo bank in Katonah (Katonah ave) and are currently wanted for bank fraud (I think I heard possibly trying to cash bad checks). One vehicle fled the scene and was attempted to be pulled over by units in the area of Route 35 @ Woodsbridge Rd (Rt-117) but failed to yield. Vehicle stopped and one suspect apprehended in the area of Route 35 & Route 100 in Somers. Second subject still at large in the area of the Katonah business district, specifically in the woods behind Peppinos. Hotline description is of a black male 5'11" thin build with goatee wearing dark suit or wind breaker, dark shoes last seen on foot. MTA stopping trains to check for subject. Aviation requested but have extended ETA for refueling. We'll have more as it becomes available. Back to you in the studio..... EDIT: Search called off at about 1600. Positive ID made of the male at large by conductor on southbound train. Made it to at least the White Plains station. Possibly the brother of the first suspect. Surprisingly I didn't see anything on lohud about this.
  24. Thanks guys for the excellent answer. I learned a lot, and I hope others will as well. I ignorantly assumed a pumper could suck from a greater height/distance than I realized. And LOL @ Mordor.
