  2. Oh, absolutely. I'm not encouraging people to break the law. I'm just calling the existing law ridiculous. Want lower cost for health care/lower taxes/a chance to chip away at the national debt? Marijuana tax revenue could offset that. Want to see less money going into drug dealers pockets? Legalized marijuana would end that.

Of course, if I was a smoker, legalization is the last thing I'd want. What's a pack of cigarettes go for nowadays?

I understand that completely, and I agree yet again. It'd be great to be able to have some more revenue to offset the current deficit. I'm not trying to take away anything from the L.E. involved, kudos either way, but it might be time for our government to take consider it.

  3. I know I'll be alone on this...

There is no law or policy in the U.S. more off base or flat out wrong than our marijuana laws. There is no reason why industrial hemp and marijuana should not be legal. Before anyone asks, no I'm not a smoker, and my employer has enough negative drug tests to back up that claim.

You're not alone on that one. I believe that it should be legalized, regulated, and taxed like tobacco and alcohol. However, until then...it's off limits.

  4. CARMEL — Investigators with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office have made an arrest in the Dec. 31 shooting death of Garrison tow-truck driver John Marcinak.

    Source: LoHud

CARMEL--Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith has announced that Anthony Grigoroff, 18, of Lake Peekskill, has been charged with second degree murder in the New Year's Eve death of Garrison resident John Marcinak. Grigoroff and others who have not been named were allegedly in the process of robbing Marcinak's Garrison Garage. When Marcinak interrupted the burglary, Grigoroff allegedly killed him. The suspect is also being charged with criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of attempted burglary. He is being held without bail at the Putnam County jail, and, if convicted, he faces a sentence of 25 years to life.

  5. Since the ranks are civil service levels, a Sgt in YPD is = to a Sgt in WCPD, Lt = Lt, etc. The testing is the same (even held on the same day and often at the same location).

So those ranks would do just fine.

In most cases, consolidation would allow more opertunities for advancement, particularly for the smaller dept.

If the smaller dept has 4 sgts. 2 lts. 1 capt. and you take the promotional test and score #1 your chance of promotion is based on 1 person retiring, if no one does in the next 2 years, you start all over again. If you score #1 and there are 25 sgts, 12 Lt's, 6 capts. 1 person retires and you are in, and the chance of 1 out of 38 retiring vs 1 out of 7 is a big difference.

    Ok - Thanks

I knew that they were civil service so they would be all the same. I was just wondering if the ranks would be 'honored' (I guess that's a better word to use in this case) if YPD transferred to a WCPD precinct.

    Thanks again.

  7. Officials in Mount Vernon and Yonkers are hoping that $3 million worth of sophisticated sound and video technology provided by Westchester County will help cops use the sound of gunfire to their advantage.

County Executive Andy Spano today announced that the county will buy and install a network of sound sensors in both cities that can detect gunfire, pinpoint its location and relay the information to police within seconds.

Found this interesting...I wonder what the rate of false alarms would be due to cars backfiring, or other similar sounds. Anyone have any additional information on how the system works?

  9. Actually, you should let the staff of this forum decide what is discussed here and what isn't. Some people wish to discuss these topics, much to the annoyance of some who often take the posts way off topic which is the main cause of the issue. This issue may not be important or of interest to you, but it might be of interest to other members.

We don't want to have these same discussions over and over, but all members should feel free to ask questions and discuss or debate emergency service issues on this site. To those making comments about there not being similar discussions on training issues, that's not true, and if you believe that, then why not start some interesting training discussion yourself?

If people hate lights so much and think they are of no significance, then why don't we just remove them from all apparatus and just respond normal traffic?

Since that training comment was directed at me, I'll explain and attempt to make others understand my point entirely.

I've posted a couple training threads asking questions and I've gotten 10 replies tops. Now, maybe it's just me but I consider training to be more important than a discussion about blue lights, red lights, pink lights, etc. Since this topic is such a hot-bed of activity, why don't you open one of the many blue light threads (or ANY lighting thread because they all wind up being about blue in the end) that already exist and continue the discussion there instead of having multiple threads about that same thing, with the same answers. Seems a bit redundant IMO. I'm just disagreeing with the fact that there are so many threads about this same thing, again with the same exact answers. Also, I don't think anyone here hates lights and wants to 'respond normal traffic' but rather, they dislike the discussions about blue lights and what is legal/illegal. QTIP - I wasn't saying anything bad about you or the forum. Not everyone has the same opinion as you.

I think you typed "apparatus" where you meant to type "P.O.V."

No matter how much some guys wish, or how many lights they put on it, their SUV/Family Sedan/Pick-Up is never going to be considered an emergency vehicle. Hell, you see it in this thread, some people are looking at laws pertaining to emergency vehicles and thinking that it somehow relates to their car.

Of course, like every problem, I don't blame those guys, I blame the department heads that let the nonsense continue after being made aware of it.

I tell ya, I have to agree 100% (yet again).

  10. Honestly, why do some many people care about this?! Why is it there's 30+ posts in a thread like this, but no where near that many in the threads about training (something that ACTUALLY matters)??

Blue lights do NOTHING except identify you as a volly FF / EMS (or whatever) when you're driving like a moron to get to a call. Let's face the facts, vollies will never have red lights, and sirens, and TBH they aren't needed. I have a blue light, do I use it? No. Why? Because it draws unwanted attention. I'm sure we here on EMTBravo can be more productive instead of wasting time on another blue light thread.

  11. Anyone have any idea why I am hearing Liberty Lines Bus chatter. I am using a BCT15. Both sites are correctly programmed. Only the Fire and EMS talkgroups were programmed. Programming was done with ARC software and radio reference internet link.

    Guy

I just had this problem so maybe I can help. It's my understanding that even if you didn't program the Liberty Line talkgroups, you'll receive them because as long as you have the control channels, it will pick up any talkgroups that aren't locked out (Fire/EMS/Hospital/Bus etc). I hope that makes sense.

Here's the list of talkgroup ids for the liberty bus service, once you lock these out you should be all set.

  12. What's confusing about it? Fill us in and maybe we can clear something up for you.

Blacking out Mask I put that in bold so anyone reading this thread knows its something I don't think has been touched on yet. I see often during drills and such firefighters who have their protective hoods placed over their heads and over the mask. Always keep in mind that you want to train the way you are going to operate. The hood belongs on their head so they consistently put it on and don it correctly and efficiently. If you need to obscure the mask, wax paper is good, regular white paper will work if you make a template and cut it out to the shape of the interior of the mask. After a good friend and instructor was using an insert he made himself out of those flimsy plastic file folders you find in office supply stores, I also started using them, which worked out well. They are opaque like the wax paper so it makes it seem like dense light colored smoke and they are also reusable which is a plus (as long as you get them back..grrrr) I got about 4 out of one file folder which are not relatively expensive. Keep the hoods where they belong. On your head. Not over your face.

ALSFF, you're a wealth of information, I always learn something new from your posts. Too bad I didn't have you as an instructor yet. In my FF1 class we used the hood method, and to be honest it was nerve racking the first time because it was pitch black. I know that's the point, but as you said the wax paper produces the effect of smoke, and some light can penetrate so you at least know if you're near a window/door etc. Aside from the hood / wax paper, 'GLAD Press and Seal' works well, and its easily removable.

  13. Another problem with interior lightbars is when personnel are trying to access equipment. Unless the lightbar shuts off when the vehicle is put in Park, the rear door is opened, or there is a manual shutoff, you get blinded.

I was referring to the front-facing interior lightbar (inneredge, or w/e it's called) seen in the third picture at the top of the windshield. Seems to be overkill IMO.
