how is an agency gonna know about a persons driving record? someone correct me if im wrong by the place were this incident took place is a VOLUNTEER agency. your gonna tell me that every agency should do driving record checks on ALL the members that drive?? are u crazy...thats just a straight up WASTE of money!!! ill tell u right now i've had accidents in my personal car 2 of which i totaled my car... you mean to tell me that the agency that i belong too shouldnt let me drive because of my PRIOR driving record??? honestly if there is a good driver training program out there its the EVOC class. people get in ACCIDENTS every day...THATS WHY THEY ARE CALLED ACCIDENTS!!!
do i think what this guy did was wrong? yes i do. and he should be held responsable for his actions because he knew he took the sleeping aid.

The Intro to Fire Officer and Fire Officer I courses provided by the OFPC aren't bad. What would be nice is a local (county-level) Line Officer and Chief Officer training program. Give these new officers some direction by guys that have been there and done that. Have guys like Captain Benz put together a program to prepare entry-level company officers, and offer another program for chief officers. There are so many things that Chiefs need to know that frankly go unnoticed. I don't know if anyone remembers this, but a while back (maybe two years ago) I posted a topic asking what legal options and standards are out there so Chiefs knew. I got minimal reply, and my guess is that it was due to the lack of knowing this information.
Career Officers have the option to go to the FDNY FLIP School, I wish something like this (even if scaled down a bit) was available to us volunteers. We will command similar incidents and have to answer to the same lawyers if we make mistakes.

ok im down for this one.
a great firefighter someone who has the understanding that helping ones community and showing department pride doesnt get in the way at a call or around the fire house. one who has knowledge and wants to keep expanding his/her knowledge while talking with both "old timers" and new members of the fire service. one who keeps trying to understand the "beast" we fight, and tries to find an understanding of what makes it tick. one who is not affraid nore brave enough to say they werent scared.
thanks all i can think of for now.

"This video seems to have hit a sore spot with some members"
Topics will hit sore spots, thats the beauty of living in the USA. Personally i dont feel that the officers did anything wrong making the inital attack. My only gripe is that they were not wearing any type of PPE. Vehicle fires are a risky business, you never know whats in there. The idea of having LEO's cross trained in fire fighting is a fasinating concept and i will be doing some more research in it. The benefits of cross training can go on forever and as was said in the origional post, everyone is working towards a common goal! Stay safe!

Not an "arm chair quarterback" but would have done the samething...not a fan of chasing someone for that amount of time..as I say at work I'm fat and don't like to run.

i have to say after reading some of these posts i have found that its making me upset. I am one of those people who loves nothing more then walking down a croweded street with the band infront jammin their hearts out. I am also the same person who would do anything to help a member of the community (as long as it doesnt involve snakes..trying to add some humor sorry.) in any way i can. of course i am a young buck i enjoy the pride i have putting on my uniform and marching down the street behind OLD GLORY and the company flag. it always gives me the reminder of why i joined the firehouse and why im doing what im doing. ive heard some people say that parades are a waste of taxpayers money, that they give good firefighters bad names, that they are a waste of time flat out. but i ask what about the social aspect?? meeting members of other departments that you may need one day to help u at a call?? who joined the fire/ems service to help their communtites as well?? arent we all in the same brother/sister hood??
Chief flynn, maybe its because some of us like to go take pictures of the equipment that is comming down the road, or maybe taking our famlies to watch, or maybe its catching up with old friends who u havent seen...no one knows the answers...atleast i know i dont...
