At 0746 hours this morning I was signing out at work after working a midnight, when we heard a loud crash, and found this green SUV on top of our LT's personal truck in a cloud of smoke.

The SUV had been traveling northbound on the Bronx River Parkway when the driver lost control and went off the side of the elevated roadway falling approximately 40 feet striking fence, the side of the red pickup, and finally coming to a rest on the hood as seen. Our first fear was that our LT who had just signed out was in his truck. Luckily he was still in the station house. The driver of the SUV was just getting out of the car. A passenger was still in the front seat of vehicle and she was removed due to gas leaking from several punctures in the gas tank. I think our sergeant requested everything as the 49 Pct, ESU and numerous FDNY units quickly arrived on scene. First on scene was Engine 45, who quickly stretched a line. On the top rear of the photo, where the chain link fence is bent is where the SUV left the roadway.

I agree. He and many others offer invaluable information on a daily basis for free and most people bash them for it. Does that mean these people were proven wrong and cant be mature enough to admit it?
If I could I would hire Bnechis to come to our county and give a lecture or a seminar on firefighting, and pay him all we could afford.
As volunteers, we all too often hide behind the term when we discuss the requirements and time away from family, yet when someone as knowledgeable as Bnechis speeks up about the training standards being less than equal when compared and that people may be entitled to a better service, these same people get defensive, and claim we are the same...Im sorry folks but we are not. Volunteers need to be trained to the same standards, plain and simple.
In regards to covering calls, we seem to have forgotten about the one most important thing here, the people we serve. This isnt about departments ego or reputation, we are talking about getting a trained response to every call for help in a "TIMELY" manner. Anyone worried about response statistics and call volume and numbers of trucks responding as opposed to number of TRAINED providers able to actually help mitigate the incident responding as fast as possible, realy needs to re-evaluate the reason you are in the service. Its all about getting help where needed WHEN needed, and not a minute later. If your house is burning and your wife/husband is inside, the last thing you care about is the whining volunteer firefighter complaining about his family party being ruined or the fact his boss wouldnt let him/her respond right away. You do expect to see trained help arrive in a timely fashion that CAN help you, instead of 20 well intentioned good hearted people who are not trained interior firefighters that cant save your loved one. To see a group of firefighters in full turnouts standing around unable to help due to lack of training is a waste...sort of like going to an ER for help and seeing people dressed in white lab coats but none of them are doctors, kind of makes no sense right? So why are we still letting newer members with no training ride to calls? Why are we letting ANY member with no training respond to calls with an expensive suit of gear that they should not have?
Sorry, end of rant. Thank you for the replies to all who did, and thank you Bnechis for your professional attitude and demeanor in handling some of the insults, your contributions to this site are appreciated by some of us and I look forward to more in the future.
    Stay Safe everyone.

I wish your statement was true. There are many differences besides payroll and pensions and they were like a cancer in my department for years creating animosity between the paid guys and volunteers. I know that they still exist today so you're either naive or in denial.
Disparate levels of training, widely varying levels of commitment, poor accountability of volunteers, varying levels of fitness, etc. are all differences between paid and volunteer.
You cannot compare FF 1 class to a career academy and claim they're equal.
And just to be accurate, there are pension costs in a lot of volunteer agencies. LOSAP programs cost money and are the volunteer equivalent of a pension.
We should demand equal training and promote more combination departments to insure that those who need it can get it. The people stuck in the anti-career or anti-volunteer camps are nothing but problems.

Here is a link to a 1996 Daily News article about the NYPD switching to all white RMP's. Savings per car $800. My linkhttp://www.nydailynews.com/archives/news/1996/06/24/1996-06-24_bye-bye_nypd_blue__new_polic.html I can only imagine what this new blue/white scheme is costing Westchester County per car in today's market.
  13. islander liked a post in a topic by grumpyff in Westchester County Police New Color Scheme?
Even if it is just the new cars, it will cost more money than an all white car with reflective stripes. IIRC when NYPD made the switch from baby blue and white to all white the savings was several hundred per car, and this was 15 years ago

You say this guy fiorino sounded like a geek , Is a geek any less capable of killing a cop ?
You say that other examples of people being stopped for open carry in other parts of PA have been "polite"... did you ever think that there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between getting stopped in northwest pebnnsylvania where it is very common to carry a weapon legally as opposed to being stopped in the ghettto of philly where it is very common for people to carry a wepon illegally.
Unless you have encountered an armed suspect on the street then you can't say how you would feel or how another cop should feel or act. In my 13 years on the job I have been forced to draw my weapon and disarm many people on the street, once even chasing a male with a handgun while I was off duty... and at no time was I nice about it and if people take issue with that I could honestly care less because at the end of the day I got the job done and I and my partners went home at the end of the tour.
You point out that he told the sergeant that he had a permit and was carrying legally... you do realize that people lie to us pretty often right ? I stopped a male in downtown yonkers one night that had a handgun in his waistband who told me the gun was legal in south carolina and after disarming him at gunpoint and informing him that his weapon was not legal in NY, it turned out that he lied to me and that his weapon was not even registered in S.C. (not that I evan began to believe him anyway).
The bottom line is that police work is not always pretty, it's not always like the movies or like it is on cops, people fight, people run, people resist arrest and people question EVERYTHING WE DO.
You took this small clip and ran with the whole " some cops don't respect the courtesy campaigns " or whatever you said and that is just complete nonsense.

The only thing I consider disturbing in this recording was the mention of the sergeant considering the use of a Taser. Deadly force(or threat of) is always met with Deadly force options(firearms). Just because the State of Pennsylvania allows open carry does not mean the city of Philadelphia does. Here is a link to the law that discusses open carry in Philadelphia: http://www.pafoa.org...arms/open-carry For an example closer to home, you may have a full carry permit issued by Westchester County, however it does not entitle you to carry your licensed firearm into NYC, you must get an additional permit (which is almost impossible) from the NYPD. Cities often have greater restrictions do to higher crime rates with firearms, and population density. The sergeant started out respectful, and this idiot decided to be a s$%t house lawyer and not comply with the sergeant's directions. The use of language escalated as the defendant continued to refuse to comply with lawful orders. The uniformed police officer is always in control, and gives the orders, not the defendant. If the order is "get on your knees", the get on on your knees.
Respect is a two way street, if you refuse to comply or treat me like crap, then my attitude and responses will change to meet the situation. Things like sir and please will get replaced with things like a$^%$hole and now.

I bet dollars to donuts that most of the Westchester departments still do not have the adapters necessary to use the FDNY threads of hydrants. What of communications?
Who is really going to respond. Yonkers and , New Rochelle., but they have their own cities to worry about, Mt Vernon who needs mutual aid for a lot of their own jobs, or all the same combo departments? The volunteers?? This is an unknown as to what you will get both in terms of numbers and experience. Its one thing for a 9/11 type incident, but on a regular basis I don't think it will work.

Yes, it's true. Not sure how it's going to be done. We're led to believe this is just a step in phasing us out. This is ridiculous. We are short staffed as it is. OT is going to go through the roof.

Consider this an official response from the department involved.
VelcroMedic1987, After reading your post It is clear that you were not in attendance and should probably refrain from your negative comments as they are mostly inaccurate.
First off if you were there you would know that the rig was not in reverse, it was moving forward at about 3 mph getting staged by the event organizers. The 87 year old gentleman was bumped by the rig as he walked in front of it while it was moving and sustained a facial laceration when he fell down. Nobody was "run over" ! He was never in intensive care and was actually released by the hospital and is at home currently.
This was during the set up for the event and not after it was over. That being said, none of the public was even there yet so rest well, no poor children will be traumatized.
And by the way, nothing was "swept under the rug", It was fully investigated by the police agency within this jurisdiction.
The department has been in contact with the gentleman and wishes him a speedy recovery.
Nothing more will be said on this forum by the department involved and any questions should be directed to Chief Ed O'Connell at 914-227-0233.

They were numbered that why because we only use 31-11 31-12 and 31-13 as our officer and 9 is just considered a portable radio each bike will have a portable radio assigned to it . I also don't agree with putting 100% volunteer on the bikes my comment was what if somewhere down the line we decide to have a paid crew for daytime coverage ? And the answer I got was we'll just take it off the bikes than. I'm not in charge I don't make the decisions.
