  1. When I was a member of Ardsley FD, one of the issues with MA, both giving or receiving, is the fact that AFD has its own radio frequency, so a Chief Officer was always sent to be a liason between AFD and other companies and/or command for communication purposes. As I have been out of the Dept several years, they may have upgraded the radio systems by now though. AFD also always left at least 1 Chief in the village for coverage.
  2. Good call with the rescue tool. BTW, This is just a pet peeve of mine, but "Jaws of Life" is a trademarked name, owned by Hurst. Any other rescue tool is not the Jaws of Life. The press is stupid. getting off my soapbox now...
  3. I think this video was posted on here already... cant find it this moment though...
  4. somerandomfireman (6 months ago) Reply wow. i'm sure your chief would love to see this one. lol Ding1720 (5 months ago) the chief joined us about 2 min after we made this video lol DIng1720 is the "firefighter" that posted this video. This was one of his replies on youtube. Glad to see his Chief takes the safety of his members seriously. Not only does Hess have a point about battery life, I'm SURE their ears must have been ringing after that. Noise Inducing Hearing Loss may occur at 85dB, and Scott states that the PASS is 95dB.
  5. As one or two of you know, my girlfriend works for "The First 48". In fact, she is an editor for the show. Her second episode premieres this Thursday night at 10:00PM on A&E. Here is a link to the episode description: http://www.aetv.com/listings/episode_detai...pisodeid=261481 So set your DVR or tune in and watch!

  7. I think this bill is more about having states like, I believe, north carolina for example, that do NOT ALLOW UNIONS IN THE STATE. South Carolina also. I remember there being a big deal about the guys in Charleston not being IAFF members and the IAFF wanted to help in the memorials and stuff.

  10. Also make sure to remember to not only ask, "how many people were in the car?", but to make sure that number includes that person. I was at a call where we arrived on scene of a major car wreck and there were teenagers all over. The one conscious kid I was checking out said there were 4 in the car, but what he meant was 4 OTHERS in the car. Luckily all the patients were found, but could have been bad being that one of the victims ended up in a nearby ravine and was able to pull himself out as we were arriving on scene.
  11. Jet- That is a different show, the name escapes me. The First 48 follows real homicide detectives around after a homicide occurs. The show is presently being taped in Miami, Detroit, Dallas, Cincinnati, Kansas City(both of them), and maybe a few others.
  12. RIP Brother.
  13. RIP Brother. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

  15. Do the spouses get a pension based on the deceased posthumous rank and pay? If so, that is a huge boost in pay for the survivors.
  16. In volunteer fire departments, the existence of social rooms with bars, usually upstairs over the garage area where firefighters hang out to await calls, is an old tradition. THIS is the big problem... I hope I do not have to expand.... 'nuff said...
  17. Was in the car in Brooklyn and heard some loud planes overhead, but couldn't actually see until the third time they flew over. Got a brief glimpse of 3 jets, flying pretty low.
  18. Dalmations in fact, do NOT get along with other dogs, but get along greatly with horses. So the dogs would run alongside the horses pulling the fire cart so other dogs would not spook the horses, which they tended to do. Dalmations also usually have a shorter lifespan than other breeds due to the fact that their skull stops growing, but their brain does not. This causes a great amount of pain, attributes to their more violent nature, and early death.
  19. Do I sense some hostility here 585? I agree with it... Stamford Fire Rescue uses 3 firefighters and 1 fire officer as a FAST. This is 1 Engine Company. In addition, the Rescue Company is on hand for, well, rescue. Larger incidents may use 2 FAST, but rarely is this employed, unfortunately. All SFRD members get annual FAST training. It is not enough, in my opinion. SFRD, according to the SOG, uses 1 Engine or 1 Ladder Company, but is pretty much always an Engine, for the simple reason of 7 Engines, only 3 Trucks. All SFRD apparatus have a RIT(as SFRD actually calls it) bag. The Engine companies carry RIT arm bands, a silver tarp for tools, spare SCOTT face pieces and regulators. The silver tarp has a list of all equipment to be gathered. It includes lights, irons, saw, radios, and some other stuff I can't remember (that is why it is written on the tarp). The truck companies have a bag with a SCOTT Pack with a larger 1 hour bottle. This pack is just the frame assembly, no harness, and is for the downed firefighter. We received only 3 or 4 of these, so that is why they are on the Trucks. In addition, a ladder is thrown on the A side of the fire building. As stated before, annual training for each member. The standard response for a structure fire is 3 engines, 1 truck, 1 rescue, 1 deputy. If a working fire is declared, a fourth Engine is assigned as FAST. I would like to see the day that the third engine on the first alarm is employed as the FAST, being that the first few minutes are probably the most dangerous. Unfortunately, the crews inside are without a FAST on the outside for a good 15 minutes at least, by the time the RIT is dispatched, en route to the scene, mostly way across town, and assembled on scene. This is unacceptable to me personally. How many times do things go bad in this time frame? I do not know numbers, but off the top of my head, seems like a lot. Just some food for thought.
  20. I saw Fire Patrol 1 this morning on Chambers Street. What is going on with that? I thought that it was disbanded?
  21. Alot of WC protection districts are based on town or village lines with no automatic MA. Ardsley Country Club is about 1/4 mile from Ogden Engine Co (DFFD), yet Irvington FD is the first due and sole auto response there (probably about a 2-3 mile response). This is not a slam at those departments, but an Auto MA agreement should be set up for areas like this. I am not sure of the workings of a lot of the depts around WC, and who has Auto MA, but some of the problems reside in the fact that there is no exclusive dispatching agency. Stamford has a pretty good system of MA, especially now that SFRD E5 is responding into parts of TORFDs area, significantly reducing response times to that mostly residential neighborhood. Among the Big Five, all boxes have multiple Depts responding. SFRD utilizes Glenbrook FD and Belltown FD often on box alarms in SFRD districts that border those districts respectively. This is possible due to a unified dispatch agency for the entire city.
  22. This is pretty crazy: http://www.seriouswheels.com/mno/Mini-XXL-...S-1600x1200.htm http://www.seriouswheels.com/mno/Mini-XXL-...l-1600x1200.htm I saw something similar to this on the streets of brooklyn heights the other day, couldn't get a photo, or oddly, find a decent one online: http://www.specialmomentslimousines.com/f-350inside.html
