FAST Requirements

5 posts in this topic

I am trying to get a general consensus of what other departments FAST member training requirements are. Aside from in-house training that is conducted monthly, what courses are required to be a member of the team?

Our requirements:

Firefighter I or higher for at least 2 years

Firefighter Safety & Survival

Class "A" Interior Firefighter, no restrictions.

Letter from Chief of your dept. stating you are in good standing.

FAST Operations or equivilant.

Annual Physical and Fit test.

Ours is a county team, only 3 years old, so we are working out the bugs.

We are pretty much the same. We also stress that everyone knows their truck company functions since the skills overlap. Knowledge of search skills, force entry and use of saws could be needed. We also teach things like how to use halligans and 6' hooks (FDNY steel shaft Roof hooks) as leverage to extricate trapped fireman.

It would be a great idea to get some rope training or technical rescue as you will be using ropes alot.

Our Deputy Coordinator in charge of the team is a rescue tech. He teaches us rope and knot work at our drills. We work with biners, rope, pulleys, and rescue equipment at all of our drills. We are encouraged to take any rescue class also, but our county hasnt had one in quite some time now.
