Cool tool. According to my Haz-Mat Instructor, the state has 3 of them and is looking to add a 4th. Seems like a good addition to the DES resource pool!

As the Operations officer at this incident I think I can shed some light on this situation. First, the property conditions that first due units encountered where deplorable. The entire property was covered in 18-20 inches of snow with one, 12 inch wide footpath barely shoveled to the front door. The initial stretch alone was extremely strenuous and taxing on the manpower.
Once interior, crews encountered extreme Colliers Mansion conditions, preventing them from making an expedient advance on the fire on the first floor. The basement, where the heaviest fire was encountered, was a whole different story. Upon making entry to the basement, crews dealt with floor to ceiling junk as well as a well seasoned pile of firewood and the contents of of a woodworking shop.
As far as the apparatus on scene; in that geographical location, due to the lack of hydrants, we were operating from our tanker district alarm assignments, which brings more tankers than manpower carrying apparatus. The time of day is tough on manpower regardless of conditions. Factor in the conditions, and your burning through fresh bodies faster than you can get them there.
In closing, I would like to personally thank all Mutual aid departments for their quick response and assistance.

    Nothing built like a Seagrave.

The situation that Port Chester is dealing with will have no effect on their use of mutual aid. Your statement is true with most staffing issues, but I do see it for this one.

It's quite true that the fire service, and often specifically the FDNY, are resistant to change. I agree completely. Tools ranging from the Mask itself to the TIC were cast aside as unnecessary. Clearly, those tools and a lot of others have proved to be key components of firefighting operations.
Resistance to new technology isn't a forgone conclusion either. Over the last couple of years we've begun using EFAS, the Electronic Firefighter Accountability System. At the start of every tour, each member is put on an electronic riding list that links with our radio I.D.'s. When a member broadcasts, their name, company and riding position are displayed on the MDT screen on any Battalion vehicle. This tech. was immediately embrace by the members. it's highly functional, makes our job easier and dramatically increases operational safety.
I think that the concept of a device that would locate a downed member within the fire building is also something that the members have a very positive opinion of. What's at issue is that the "PacTracker" itself is not very good. This really isn't about who wanted the device vs. who builds it, nor is it an issue of how useful the technology is. I think we can all agree that it's a great idea.
What we have here is the rank and file speaking out (almost unanimously) against the usefulness of this technology in its's current form. On the other hand, someone associated with the maker telling us we're wrong. The right move here, for the builder, is to take the word of the firemen who use the device, say it's lousy, and BUILD A BETTER ONE!

I like the thought process that if you can't say it to someone's face, don't post it behind an alias.

I'm wondering why many of the people have "screen" names that are not their own, and also have no information in their profile depicting who they are or wear they work/volley. These are folks that seem to have the most to say. Man up and let the world know who you are.

Every bit of this story is true. The Post is a rag, and a story like this about 1 person is a little rough, but it's a 100% true. There's a lot of men out there who couldn't complete the run and are not employed by this job.....

Typical Emtbravo this post should have been closed already cause it's so far off topic. All of this career and volunteer needs to stop. What is Emtbravo motto "working together winning together". This post is so far off .does career Department's in Westchester have their problems yes do have some of the same issues as the volunteers Such as manpower. You got a lot of taxpayers that view career firefighters as greedy Workers because of high pensions is this a problem with the careers side yes. How about Bengal tiger fire You had North White Plains engine covering the city of White plains. I have heard a few times of West Harrison tower ladder standing by White Plains quarters headquarter. White Plains, Purchase and West Harrison working together on I-287 to get a job done. when Purchase had the Full Moon fire White Plains Ladder was their at purchases headquarters on standby. How was Fairview working with Elmsford or Valhalla all of these are Emtbravo motto "working together winning together" . Seems that a couple member all always "putting down volunteer firefighter" in Westchester there are many professional volunteer firefighters which take it serious as will as Department. To The administrators of Emtbravo close out this topic. Been a member on the site since 2006 I have seen a big downfall of the site or a few months now. Seems like every other post is career versus volunteer. It seem that the site lost member that you to post a lot on here. That the rule are not followed. Let's work together
