I saw it on the news tonight, it looks like they will be using the 2002 Mack/General Safety that was donated to the city after September 11

What's the reasoning behind the additional Rescue Company?

Is it being assigned to alarms just as the normal Rescues do?

They said it was due to the recent terror threat

We haven't heard anything on why the new Rescue. The news said as a result of the new threats. Last time when we went to "Orange Alert" they sent around a entire plan on how to respond, extras units and all. However this time around haven't seen anything.

They are working like a normal rescue, Manhattan is now covered by Rescue 6, 1 and 3.

i heard that part of the reason for another rescue is because it might cut response time down for res 1 who sometimes were delayed covering some of the calls in manhattan. also that the unit is having guys detailed to cover the unit? only hear say so no quotes!

The rumor mill has it that Rescue 6 will be in service until just after the November elections.

Recently I was speaking with my pal at FDNY Rescue 2 and he tells me the same as mentioned, Rescue 6 is only temporary unit. Staffing it has not been easy. The FF's assigned to R1 are not happy about this R6. Some FF's from R1, R3, and Squads have been reassigned to staff R6.

I am one to fully support cutting down response time and adding

additional resources as needed but do they really need this R6?

It's nice they will add units such as R6 for the "Elections" but how

about the residents of the City of New York who live there everyday?

Rescue 6 has been getting QUITE a lot of work as of late. The rumor mill has it that a ladder company (20?) in lower Manhattan COULD be shut to justify funding of Rescue 6 in a more permanent role.
