Driving: Going Out The Door....

12 posts in this topic

When you're driving, what are some of the things you're thinking or should be thinking when your going out the door?

Me:

The specifications and capacities of the vehicle I'm driving

Who's on board and are the buckled up?

Have I marked myself enroute?

How can I get there the fastest, are any streets closed, can my truck fit, etc?

Dangers: School dismissals, Sunday Church, etc while enroute

Weather and road conditions

And finally, preplanning the structure in my head and figuring out where to place the apparatus upon arrival.

Of course, there's other things and I'm sure I'm forgetting something

What do you think about?

The one thing I always think now is...Do I have a portable?...Down here in AL we don't have them in the apparatus so we have to grab them off the charger before we head out. The one time I forgot one I ended up in a position where I had to do all my radio communications from the command car and it really screwed me up. (I would rather not have to go into the way my department operates, so thats the reason for the vauge description of the scenario)

Depending on time of day which seems to be the theme so far it can vary.

Before I even put my foot on the brake to put it in gear I ensure everyone on has their seatbelt on.

I'm thinking where am I going, how am I going to go there, who else is going, what will be my responsibility depending on when I arrive.

Middle of the night....first thought...."I'm going where? for what?"

"Don't key up on the radio till the truck has cleared the doorway."

My department, in their infinite wisdom several years ago, purchased el-cheapo garage door openers. In a world of "you get what you pay for," our openers operate on a frequency close to our radios, so if you key up while the truck is half in and half out, you can expect to hear a nice crash on top of the rig.

If it is betewwn 7-9 or 2-4 I am thinking about school buses and kids...

My rate of speed...

On coming intersections...

Hydants...

Other drivers who don't pay attention...

Good topic...
