"Bug Eyes" On Police Cars?

33 posts in this topic

Oswegowind,

Speaking of license plate checks, can plates from foreign countries be run through NYSPIN or any other law enforcement database ?

Was under the impression that Canadian plates are the only ones linked into USA lae enforcement databases and it might only be those from eastern Canadian provinces such as Ontario and Quebec. Can anybody clarify this??

Also, do the license plate readers work through vehicle glass?

Was thinking if they can be discreetly mounted inside of undercover vehicles such as vans, etc.

Thank You.

That is correct, those can be file checked thru NYSPIN via NLETS.

Yonkers has a couple...one mounted on 505 car (housing) which for a while was being redirected around to the precincts.  Every once and a while they will do a detail in the 3rd Pct with one....usually on channel 3 until they stop one...it goes nuts down here almost ridiculous at times...just one thing to remember for users....CHECK THE STATE...one of our cars was looking for a stolen NY plate...trouble is car they were behind had OHIO plates and all the reader does is recognize the numbers based on infrared reflection (refraction...one or the other)...so you still have to pay attention!

This is true - the plate reader doesn't distinguish states. It only reads the plate number and compares the plate number against the database. The operator has to verify the information after the "hit". Our job has had lots of "hits" that were actually out of state plates and not the NY vehicle we had.

If a Canadian license plate or other country's plate is in the system, it will be in the readers database. As we discussed before, the plate reader uses a downloaded database from DMV for stolen or otherwise wanted vehicles so it doesn't "check" plates in real-time. On the other hand, if you want to run a foreign plate through NLETS, you can do that but it has nothing to do with the plate reader. As for Canadian provinces, I think you can run them all - some may not be automated systems so that may slow (significantly) the response.

Working through glass is an interesting question. I don't know why they wouldn't work as long as they're able to view the plates as they go by.
