Transporting of Seeing Eye Dogs

40 posts in this topic

Good question...in Jersey the DOH says:

No flowers -- pollen/allergens

No balloons -- driver obstruction

No animals -- dander/allergens

I would either try every avenue possible before taking the working dog or plan on spending some extra time deconing after the run. I've put flowers in plastic bags and taped them shut because going to a LTC facility sucks enough that I feel bad when the little old lady really wants the flowers and I really want to leave them....I'm pretty sure that this plan wouldn't work for a pet though.

Under the ADA seing eye dogs are considered a service animal. They can go almost anywhere including taxis and hospitals. The interesting thing is that the person who uses the animal can't be asked what his disability is and is not required to carry any type of ID for the animal.

It specifically states: "Allergies and fear of animals are generally not valid reasons for denying access or refusing service to people with service animals."

Here is a link that may help: http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/svcanimb.htm

This was just brought up in my EMT refresher.

Yes, you can transport the PT w/ Dog.

Ok, but what about you being allergic to the dog like john said he was. what's rule number one of Emt school.

safety of you

your crew ( which one of them was also allergic)

your pt

bystanders.

Now it comes down to how bad is your allergies, is it going to make your eye's red, ichie? How is this going to affect your driving? If it does affect your driving isn't the frist rule of Evoc is frist DO NO HARM. I think he made the right move on this one. Ether find another way to TXP the dog, or find another way to txp the wife. Remember we are there to help the PT not make everyone happy.

I've been thinking about this in regard to the allergy issue. What if you cannot do anything with the dog? No PD, No residence..your at a commericial establishment and its a 95 degree day? I'm not allergic so I'm transporting the dog! If someone on the ambulance is and I can delay I'll find someone that isn't. If I still can't that is why your suppose to have respiratory protection on the ambulance. Put on a N95 mask and that will help. Eye irritation and visine will help. Once your done...decon the ambulance and ventilate it with a fan.
