Yonkers soldier dies in Iraq roadside bombing

(Original publication: September 10, 2007)

YONKERS - A 26-year-old Yonkers native was killed Sunday morning by a roadside bomb in Baghdad, his parents said today.

Sgt. Courtney Hollinsworth, a graduate of Saunders Trades and Technical High School, was serving a second tour in Iraq that began in February, said his mother, Hope Hollinsworth Coaxum.

In a recent communication to the family, Hollinsworth said the situation in Iraq seemed to have worsened since his first 18-month tour, which began March 2003.

"The insurgency had gotten a lot stronger and there was more violence than the first time around," Coaxum quoted her son as saying.

Two soldiers came to the family's Onandaga Street home yesterday evening to inform them of their son's death. But the soldiers had few details concerning the incident, however, Coaxum said.
