LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A man barricaded himself in a house after telling police he had killed three relatives, then exchanged gunfire with a SWAT team, police said Thursday. One officer was killed and another wounded. The standoff began at 9 p.m. Wednesday and continued into Thursday morning. The home where the man was holed up was surrounded by more than 200 officers.

The officers were shot inside the home shortly after they arrived, Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell said at a news conference. Authorities had not been able to determine whether the man had killed his family members.

Shortly before 6 a.m., police lobbed tear gas into the home. Wind blew the gas back toward some officers, who retreated from the cloud.

Police could be seen in footage from a television helicopter using a battering ram to break into the home.

Police were able to get the officers out of the home, and rushed them to a hospital, McDonnell said. He did not explain how they got inside.

Both officers were taken to Northridge Medical Center, where one of them died just after 1 a.m., McDonnell said.

The other was seriously wounded and undergoing surgery, but was expected to survive, McDonnell said.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he had visited with the family of the officer who was killed.

"This is a very horrible tragedy and our hearts go out to all the members of the LAPD who also are grieving at this time," Villaraigosa said.

Wow, according to AP this is the first LODD for LAPD's SWAT Unit in the 27 years it has existed.

My prayers to the family of the fallen Brother, and a speedy recovery to the injured officer. Any word on the scumbag perp?

R.I.P., and a speedy recovery to the other officer involved. Hopefully the perp died in the fire that ensued from the tear gas, it would save the taxpayers paying for a trial for that animal.

A oress conference has just concluded at the scene. Earlier this morning, the suspect fired upon members of the LAPD SWAT Team and members of the LAFD who were attempting to protect surrounding exposures after the house the suspect was in caught fire, possibly after flashbang grenades were put into the structure. SWAT Team members returned fire, the suspect went down, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect is dead? Excellent. Street justice.

Though I'm sure Sharpton is on the next flight to LA to protest something.
