What is the function of a Chief Engineer?

As well as being chief operator to an apparatus, it is their job to make sure every little aspect of the apparatus they are assigned to is in working condition. All the equipment, tools, radios, air-packs, etc... including the rig and all its fuels and fluids are filled all the time.

They also report on when things go wrong (i.e. air leaks, water leaks, or fluids leaks) and if equipment is out of service. All notification goes to the captain who then reports to the chief.

The Engineer is helped out by everyone in the Company. Yes, it's his job, but the guys around the house are always checking the rig whether they're Engineer or not. The Engineer also has an Assistant to help him or to step-up in his place when he's not around. Just ask DMA327 he knows LOL.
