Deaths discovered after roll call at blaze in Southeast Houston

Two Houston firefighters were killed fighting a house fire in southeast Houston early this morning.

HFD was called to fight a one-alarm house fire on Oak Vista just after midnight, and initially fought the fire from inside the house, said District Chief Tommy Dowdy.

Description: Two Houston firefighters died battling a house fire in southeast Houston early Sunday.

The firefighters were called to a fire at a home on Oak Vista and De Leon streets a little after midnight.

Firefighters were inside the home searching for victims when they were called out because the fire became too intense. But the two did not make it out.

Captain James Harlow and Probationary FF Damien Hobbs

of Station 26 were killed.

Harlow, 50, was hired in 1979 and had been a Captain at Fire Station 26 since 2004.

Hobbs, 29, a Probationary Firefighter graduated from training in March.

Once again proving that no fire, no matter how small a fire or building, and no matter how big or busy a department is, should be taken for granted.

Firefighters are voluntarily pitching in from around the state so that everyone can attend at least part of the services.

Austin firefighters to cover shifts in Houston

About 50 Austin firefighters are traveling to Houston today, where they will fill shifts for firefighters attending funeral services for two colleagues killed in the line of duty Sunday.

Austin firefighters will fill in for Houston firefighters this evening and Thursday, when the funerals for Captain James Harlow, 50, and rookie firefighter Damion Hobbs, 30 will be held.

The Houston firefighters responded to a call early Sunday at a home occupied by an elderly couple. The couple made it out of the house safely, but the firefighters were discovered missing a short time later during roll call.

The Austin firefighters will be filling in for the Houston firefighters during their off-duty time and are traveling in their personal vehicles, department officials said.

The department’s honor guard also is attending the funeral services as well as the Emergency Services Pipes and Drums Association, which is made up of members from the police and fire departments and Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.
