Arizona DPS LODD-Phoenix AZ

A state trooper was fatally struck by a fellow officer Thursday night as he was laying down a spike strip to stop a suspect's vehicle.

The chase hit a stretch of the Loop 101 in the area of Cave Creek Road and Seventh Avenue when the suspect, Georgia Lynn Baker, 43, veered onto the right shoulder and the police cruiser in pursuit struck Officer Chris Marano, said Department of Public Safety Lt. Steve Harrison.

Authorities eventually arrested Baker, who they say was on methamphetamine at the time of the incident.

Officers on the scene, including a close friend of Marano's, tended to the 3½-year DPS veteran, and one of his close friends gave Marano CPR before he was transported to John C. Lincoln Hospital-North Mountain, where he died at 10:09 p.m. He was 28.

Marano was married and the father of four: a 7-year-old, two 5-year-olds and a 4-month-old.
