The reality is this is occuring in almost every VFD. Just change the names and the article can be reusedin every community.
The real issueis how will each department handle this new reality.
Way to many are either throwing dollars at recrutment/retention without a good return on investment or are ignoring the problem and are shrinking to a point they can no longer function.

Let's pray for the ones that have died, the families involved, and the service people that were on scene!!! Remembering the ones that died should be all that matters!!!

Keep in mind that there is a difference between "fire department honors" and a LODD Service.
There is NOTHING that compares to a LODD funeral and wake...NOTHING.
  6. 64FFMJK liked a post in a topic by Dinosaur in What Does The Future Hold For The Westchester Fire Service?
Good question. If we don't start dealing with our issues they're going to get dealt with for us, by the very same people who are closing ladder companies in New Rochelle and laying off firefighters all over the place.
Now is the right time to start improving things for the entire fire service in Westchester. 150 years of tradition, 1 step forward today, 1 step forward tomorrow.

I used it back in 2000 while working in Colorado. The S.O. even took it to the local mall for a recruiting event to show it off right after they got it. Back then it was too video game feeling. It was great in concept but graphix and lag made it a joke. Hopefully they have work these issues out since it could make a great training tool.

As the Second Asst. Chief of the Millerton Fire Company, we would like to thank all the fire companies that were involved in the mitigation of today's incident whether it was standby duty at another firehouse or directly involved in the actual extrication. So a big thanks to the Amenia, Wassaic, Stanford, Millbrook, Dover, and Lakeville fire companies. Also a tip of the lid to CC-14, CC-16, DCSO, NYSP, and the cattle farmers who were there to assist with the cows: all provided invaluable assistance.
This was a particularly tough extrication all around, because not only was it an auto accident with entrapment but it also basically a simpler man in the machine type scenario, the two fused together to make one interesting call. I was first on scene and was able to take it all in before the organized chaos ensued. A flatbed truck driven straight underneath 5-tons of machinery. All the stability was taken away from the hopper and transferred to the building and the vehicle itself. The driver was encapsulated basically but unharmed. Literally just in his seat, no way to move one way or the other. As you can imagine by the photos stabilization was the biggest issue which is why a multitude of rescues were brought in, for their cribbing alone, but also for air bags and the other specialty equipment they could provide. Once that was accomplished the actual extrication was easy. As you can tell in the photo slide we removed a back rack and the rear part of the passengers cab and the driver was able to self extricate basically from that point.
All involved stated that this was one that you could not really train for, and despite its many challenges I can say that I am proud of the outcome and way in which the incident was mitigated.

At a recent parade, I sat directly opposite a NYSP Trooper on a traffic post.
EACH and EVERY time, the stars and stripes passed by, he saluted with the most crisp salute I have ever seen. Many of the bystanders commented on it as well...all were impressed by his actions.
    Well Done Trooper, remain safe.

What can we take from this?
-Sometimes you have to imagine how things will play out in the paper and the damage that can be done to the reputation of your orginization.
-If your an officer be the officer. It is your job to be the voice of reason when things get out of hand.
-It's 2011 this is how things are we are not going back to the old days.
The alleged conduct is both illegal and sick. Instead of making this thread another gripe about a black eye for the fire service lets try to be vigilant and do our jobs and make the tough decisions to keep or orginizations on the level.

    MIke,
I can understand your sentiment but the whole rationale for suspending licenses and/or registrations is because of non-appearances in court. When a defendant fails to appear, the court's only recourse is suspension (or the issuance of a warrant). Sadly, as with almost any other process, there are occasionally errors.
I'm reasonably sure that some of those 100,000 tickets were written by yours truly and I sincerely doubt I'm going to remember many of them. Some, however, left a lasting impression and those I will gladly prosecute even now.

Henry's family should be PAYING the Police Officer $120 million, not suing for it. There son attempted to murder Police Officers and placed other innocent persons in grave danger by attempting to run over the Police Officers while driving drunk. The Henry family should be hanging their heads in shame and owe the Police Officers an apology for the criminal actions of their son.

I do not know if Sing Sing has an engine but I will ask when I return from Vacation. Every NYS prison has a fire brigade with turnout gear, SCBA (scott 2.2) , hoses and nosles on carts or vans depending on facility and several have engines, with some brand new engines delivered in the past year. All SCBA certified members of the Fire Responce Team are required to have FF1 and have 8 - 16 hours of fire team training per year.
I wonder what the damage total will be since the state is looking to close up to 4 prisons and the local politions are asking for Sing Sing to close since therr is little ecanomic impact on the area from Sing Sing and there has been several inquires to purces the property over the years.

Why not there are some Dept.s that have the commercial EMS contracted to their areas respond on AFA's. What use in a Ambulance at a fire if the Engine is 15 minutes behind them consoling the home owner as they watch their house burn down?
  22. daplachta liked a post in a topic by 64FFMJK in Quick question: "don't put the fire out!"
Remember the owner may also have a good reason to tell you not to fight the fire so before chaging in find out why.
One of my friends reloads Ammo and probably has close to 10,000 rounds of ammo plus powder, lead and other related materials and I would not want to try to fight a fire at his house.

Wow. That's a lot of money and apparatus.
What about what the FD's are doing to taxpayers? Isn't it appropriate to focus on that?
Good question. Is there an answer to this? What FD's aren't paying enough and which ones are paying too much? I bet there is no answer and I bet none of these departments can demonstrate how efficient the current system is.
Is there any study to show that response times would be slowed by consolidation or regionalization? Of course they think it would be a bad idea, it's their sandbox being threatened with reorganization.
  25. 64FFMJK liked a post in a topic by Dinosaur in DISCUSSION: Pelham Manor/Bronx Bus MCI - 03-12-11
Tom, your faith in Pelham Manor is admirable but be realistic. What does Pelham Manor have on duty, one and one with two guys each? No rescue, no EMS but a contract bus. Mutual aid would get you more stuff but how fast and how organized and disciplined would it be? New Rochelle has a rescue, 3 more guys. FDMV has one (I think), 3 more guys. Call Yonkers and you'll get some real help but its at least 20-25 minutes away if the call was quick. Then what? You can piece together a response but you'll be spending more time figuring out who to call from where then you'll spend being the IC.
Look at what NYC sent to the scene (not counting PD that had at least four ESU trucks there or EMS):
By my rough count its about 120 firefighters including bosses. What would it take to muster that anywhere in Westchester or the rest of the Hudson Valley? Add to that the expertise and experience that the city guys have. Again not a knock on the guys from Westchester but NYC does more in a month than some jobs do in a year.
They had everyone extricated in a hour and I bet most of them transported in that time too. Have you ever been to an airport exercise in Westchester? They can't transport that many people in an hour during an exercise. Imagine reality.
