Eng 79, Eng 81, What is carried on top of cab

9 posts in this topic

On the new FDNY engine companies (Eng 79 or 81) there is a stainless steel box above the cab. What is carried in that compartment?

I'm pretty sure it's up to the individual companies. We (truck) have stuff we use infrequently up there. The squads and tech engines have had them for years and keep their Level A's suits in them.

Engine 81 carries decon equipment, life preserver, foam nozzle and some different length ropes. Things that are not used frequently but are to be carried in case needed. These new rigs do have large compartments and plenty of room for storage of equipment.

im just going out on a limb here, but isn't that the A/C Unit

The A/C unit is on the roof of the cab between the light bars and diamond plate storage box.

although they are not the best looking things in the world, as it appears they were just dropped from outspace, they are a wise use of space... on our Seagrave, we had and area above our driver's side compartments and the hose compartment, were we had a Aluminum storage box built to fit the space. This is were we store our brush tools, floating strainers and other " stuff " not used everyday...

The box was added cause it was cheap and didnt change the overall height of the rig. What goes in to them or any compartment is up to the individual firehouse. If you had an AC unit that big we would actually be cool in the rig in the summer.

Funny story....

The shops has had to cut down the height of each box and remount the lid, as it was too high and didn't fit in many firehouses.

More importantly, note the black wire and little white disk mounted at the front edge of the box in the picture. That's the GPS locator. Big brother (or uncle sal) is watching....
