FDNY Helmet Shields

8 posts in this topic

From looking at pictures of firefighters, I'm trying to fiqure out what the colors on the FDNY helmet shields represent. Here's what I've put together so far:

Black:Engine

Red:Truck

Blue:Rescue

Yellow:Squad

And of course, white shield with whatever color number would be an officer of that particular type of unit.

Does anybody know of any others, or have any corrections to the above?

On a white officers helmet front, are the colors of the company numbers different for the type of company? Example, engine company officer, white shield with black letters and red letters for the truck officer?

I was at R2 not too long ago and there was a Yellow Helmet on the Gear Rack and the Capt told me that they had an active FDNY Auxilary (Retired NYPD whose father was R2) and that the tradition goes back to WWII when extra manpower was needed. Sounded pretty cool....
